In this paper we propose some web service design criteria which can be used in application design to produce high quality web services. We describe currently available methods for determining if web services meet those criteria. The verification methods we describe can be either undertaken using peer review processes or performed by automated utilities. Web services that meet these criteria will be both useful and useable in the production environment.

Accurate segmentation is critical in many advanced imaging applications such as volume determination, radiation therapy, 3D rendering, and surgery planning. However, due to the complex anatomical structure of tissue and organs, as well as artifacts caused by patient motion, beam hardening, and partial volume effect in CT image, the boundaries between different regions are smeared. In addition, the intensities of bone voxels vary widely that some of them are so close to that of the muscle. They all make the extraction of bone out of surrounding tissue quite difficult in CT images. In this study, a knowledge-based fuzzy clustering method was proposed, which was formulated by modifying the objective function of the standard fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm with additive adaptation penalty. Since the membership of voxels in boundary regions is intrinsically fuzzy, unsupervised fuzzy clustering methods turns out to be particularly suitable for handling the bone segmentation problem. The knowledge-based fuzzy clustering method was tested by patient CT images. Experimental results demonstrated that while the conventional FCM methods might loss a significant amount of bone volume during segmentation, the proposed method could improve the performance of bone extraction significantly. © 2005 IEEE.

Good performance of turbo code can be obtained by updating extrinsic information in the iterative decoding process. At first, transition patterns are categorized by the characteristics of extrinsic information in this paper. The distribution of these patterns is surveyed according to signal-to-noise ratio. The dominant error pattern is determined based on the results. And error performance improvement is expected by correcting it. Thus, a scheme to correct the bit with the lowest extrinsic information is proposed and analyzed. The performance is improved as expected from simulation results as compared to the conventional scheme especially in error floor region. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Multi-agent system (MAS) is an important research field of distributed artificial intelligence. MAS negotiation is one of the key contents in MAS research. Combining with traditional contract net protocol, acquaintance model, acquaintance coalition inner task allocation distributed optimization algorithm, bulletin board model of agent information exchange with different knowledge and agent mental state parameters, this paper presents a new multi-agent system negotiation model based on expanded contract net protocol and introduces the design and implementation of it in detail.

This paper suggests a prototype system for visualization and analysis of anatomic shape and functional features of the hippocampus. Based on the result of MR-SPECT multi-modality image registration, anatomical and functional features of hippocampus are extracted from MR and registered SPECT images, respectively. The hippocampus is visualized in 3D by applying volume rendering to hippocampus volume data extracted from the MR image with color coded by registered SPECT image. In order to offer the objective and quantitative data concerning to the anatomic shape and functional features of the hippocampus, the geometric volume and the SPECT intensity histogram of hippocampus regions are automatically measured based on the MR and the registered SPECT image, respectively. We also propose a new method for the analysis of hippocampal shape using an integrated Octree-based representation, consisting of meshes, voxels, and skeletons. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Integrating multiple features content-based image retrieval can overcome the problems of single feature, but how to organize these features and feature representation methods is difficult in image retrieval. In this paper, an automatic feature weight assignment approach based on genetic algorithm is proposed. The problem of weight assignment is firstly changed into optimization problem, and genetic algorithm is used for finding the optimization weight in order to get the best retrieval results. The experimental results show that the recall and precision of this proposed approach is better than the others' weight assignment methods. This approach is robust to various kinds of features and feature representation methods, and it can get the best feature combination for image retrieval. © 2003 IEEE.

Agent-oriented software design systems have been provided, such as MESSAGE system and FIPA model. But still there is no unambiguous definition for "agent". A general agent can be described in terms of autonomy, social ability, reactivity and proactivity, which, in turn, are implemented by the individual agent entity's capability, perception and introspection properties. With the simulation of the memory principle being the focus, this article builds a new architecture model to practice these properties. After researching former models, we provide a new model of an individual agent, named MyAgent, using the Z specification language. By simulating the person's memory action, this model improves on Goodwin's model. Since the interaction between agents and environment assumes more practical significance, we lay considerable emphasis on it while paying less attention to the reasoning of the mutual perception between agents.
