Diversity and Progression among Students Starting Social Work Qualifying Programmes in England between 1995 and 1998: A Quantitative Study

She is a Demographer with a background in statistics and computer science. She is experienced in quantitative research techniques and applied statistics methods in demography and population studies. She is particularly interested in demographic factors affecting social care workforce as well as international variations in handling the global demographic changes. She also has experience in marriage and family dynamics and relationships between cultural diversity and social care needs. Jo Moriarty is a Research Fellow at the Social Care Workforce Research Unit. She has undertaken a series of studies looking at community care services with a particular interest in services for older people with dementia and their carers and people from minority ethnic groups. Jill Manthorpe is Co-Director of SCWRU with a background in university social work and health professional training at pre- and post-qualifying levels. She has undertaken a range of research studies in areas of community care adult protection professional training and risk. She has published widely with recent books on social policy inquiries abuse and students’ mental health. Her particular interests are in social gerontology and she has undertaken a range of research into older people’s services for voluntary groups local providers and national bodies. Peter Huxley is a qualified social worker with practice experience in child and adult mental health settings. He also has management and Board-level experience in adult mental health and social care services. He is Professor of Social Work Head of the Section of Social Work and Social Care and Deputy Head of Department in the Health Services Research Department at the Institute of Psychiatry at Kings College and Director of SCWRU. He recently completed a national survey of the mental health social work workforce in England

There has been no large-scale study looking at the proportion of social work students in the UK who achieve the professional qualification, although there is some evidence that different groups experience different rates of progression. This article examines progression rates among students studying for the DipSW in England and analyses the factors that influence whether students achieve an award on time (defined as achieving an award without being referred, deferred, failing or withdrawing). The results show that male students, students from a black and minority ethnic group, and students with a self-reported disability have poorer progression rates. However, contrary to the picture in higher education as a whole, older students and students with previously lower levels of educational attainment do not have poorer progression rates. Social work education has important lessons to share with higher-education colleagues in terms of working with an increasingly diverse student group. However, work is needed to identify students at greater risk of non-progression than others and to develop more effective student support strategies.

Upon graduation he remained at Clemson University and received the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1997. During this time he also served as a research/teaching assistant. His research work focused on the design and implementation of various nonlinear control algorithms with emphasis on the induction motor and mechanical systems with friction present. He is currently working toward his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering at Clemson University. Darren M. Dawson was born in 1962 in Macon Georgia. He received an Associate Degree in Mathematics from Macon Junior College in 1982 and a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1984. He then worked for Westinghouse as a control engineer from 1985 to 1987. In 1987 he returned to the Georgia Institute of Technology where he received the Ph.D. Degree in Electrical Engineering in March 1990. During this time he also served as a research/teaching assistant. In July 1990 he joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and the Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) at Clemson University where he currently holds the position of Professor. Under the CAM director's supervision he currently leads the Robotics and Manufacturing Automation Laboratory which is jointly operated by the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering departments. His main research interests are in the fields of nonlinear based robust adaptive and learning control with application to electro-mechanical systems including robot manipulators motor drives magnetic bearings flexible cables flexible beams and high-speed transport systems. Aman Behal was born in India in 1973. He received his Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in 1996. In this paper, we extend the observer/control strategies previously published in [25] to an n -link, serially connected, direct drive, rigid link, revolute robot operating in the presence of nonlinear friction effects modeled by the Lu-Gre model. In addition, we also present a new adaptive control technique for compensating for the nonlinear parameterizable Stribeck effects. Specifically, an adaptive observer/controller scheme is developed which contains a feedforward approximation of the Stribeck effects. This feedforward approximation is used in a composite controller/observer strategy which forces the average square integral of the position tracking error to an arbitrarily small value. Experimental results are included to illustrate the performance of the proposed controllers.

A system has been developed for providing automated assessment in CS1. During the academic year 2004- 2005 this system was evaluated empirically by examining a sample group of students using both the traditional assessment methods and also the automated techniques, four times during the year. A significant correlation was found between the performance in both tests, however the correlation was only strong for students who performed well during the *** further this study, students were interviewed and asked their opinion on the generated questions. The students offered reasons for the variation in their performance and provided an insight into where the discrepancies lie. We discovered that weaker students were employing rote-learning and using it to score marks in the class *** this survey was conducted on paper, a large amount of student roughwork ("doodles") was collected, the analysis of this roughwork is also discussed.

NDE of FRP Wrapped Timber Bridge Components Using Infrared Thermography

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the use of infrared thermography technique for detection of subsurface debonds in fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) wrapped timber railroad bridge components. Simulated subsurface debonds were constructed in the laboratory in timber piles wrapped with FRP composite fabric. The debonds varied in size, thickness and severity. These debonds were placed between the 1/8″ thick FRP wrap and the timber surface. The thermal images from the delaminated specimens were compared with the thermal images from undamaged specimens to study the effect of subsurface debonds. In addition, several field tests were conducted using the infrared imaging system on three timber railroad bridges located in Moorefield, West Virginia that were rehabilitated with FRP composite fabric wraps. The field test data was used to detect any possible debond at the composite‐timber interface and study the effect of environmental parameters on the infrared images. This study showed that the infrared thermography technique can be effectively used to detect subsurface debonds in timber components wrapped with FRP composite fabric. The study also shows the effect of different parameters (environmental conditions, heat source, etc.) on the infrared images.

The objective of this work is the consideration and implementation of some basic premises used in the learning process in Artificial Neural Networks (ANN's). Initially the net will be trained with the algorithm of competitive learning through the Kohonen Self-Organizable Map to, starting from the result, be compared with the Active X Neusciences simulator. The chosen domain for the implementation of the learning algorithms was the application in the Clinical Diagnosis of the Convulsive Crises, based on the International Classification League Against Epilepsy ILAI/81 (COMMISSION, 1981). According to the results of the simulator, the base of training of the net, the net showed a satisfactory performance in 77,7% of the neurons used in the classification of patterns. Only 22,3% of the neurons of the net didn't obtain a high index of convergence. Through the implementation of the standard algorithm of Kohonem and using the 2×2 configuration, in other words, four exit neurons, the test set of the net obtained an index of classification of 100%.

LIVELY graduated from the University of Colorado with a BS in applied mathematics and an MS in mathematics in 1976 and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an MS in electrical engineering and the degree ocean engineer in naval architecture and marine engineering in 1984. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1989 after 23 years of service. Assignments included electrical officer on the USS Constellation (CV 64) project engineer for the DDG 51 machinery control system (NAVSEA) and DDG 51 Technical Director (NAVSEA). He was vice president of the PDI Division of Bird-Johnson Company from July 1989 to November 1998 where he managed various gas turbine and machinery controls related development projects. He joined Anteon Corporation's Systems Engineering Group as senior controls engineer in December 1998 where he provided technical support to the integrated power systems program (NAVSEA PMS 510) and managed the Office of Naval Research Afloat Laboratory. DR. MARK KIRKPATRICK is currently an independent consultant in human factors and work-load/manning analysis and modeling. He holds a Ph.D. degree in experimental psychology from The Ohio State University and has 34 years of experience in applied human factors. From 1982 through 2000 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as the senior vice president of Carlow International. Aboard current ships, such as the DDG 51, engineering control and damage control activities are manpower intensive. It is anticipated that, for future combatants, the workload demand arising from operation of systems under conditions of normal steaming and during casualty response will need to be markedly reduced via automated monitoring, autonomous control, and other technology initiatives. Current DDG 51 class ships can be considered as a manpower baseline and under Condition III typical engineering control involves seven to eight watchstanders at manned stations in the Central Control Station, the engine rooms and other machinery spaces. In contrast to this manning level, initiatives such as DD 21 and the integrated engineering plant (IEP) envision a partnership between the operator and the automation system, with more and more of the operator's functions being shifted to the automation system as manning levels decrease. This paper describes some human systems integration studies of workload demand reduction and, consequently, manning reduction that can be achieved due to application of several advanced technology concepts. Advanced system concept studies in relation to workload demand are described and reviewed including. Piecemeal applications of diverse automation and remote control technology concepts to selected high driver tasks in current DDG 51 activities. Development of the reduced ship's crew by virtual presence system that will provide automated monitoring and display to operators of machinery health, compartment conditions, and personnel health. The IEP envisions the machinery control system as a provider of resources that are used by various consumers around the ship. Resource needs and consumer priorities are at all times dependent upon the ship's current mission and the availability of equipment pawnbrokers.

This paper defines, develops and examines a set of generic analysis tools that can be applied to Models and Simulations at the Systems Engineering level of fidelity. The tools examine the performance and effectiveness of Sensors;Weapons;and Battle Management, Command, Control, Communications, computers, and Intelligence ((BMCI)-I-4) systems and equipment. The Measures of Performance (MOPs), Measures of Effectiveness (MOEs) and Measures of Force Effectiveness (MOFEs) were extracted from the Modular Command and Control Structure Paradigm which was developed at the Naval Postgraduate School. The paradigm provides for the development of evaluation criteria (MOPs, MOEs, and MOFEs) in a framework that ensures the traceability of system performance and effectiveness to the system operational requirements as specified in the Operational Requirements Document (ORD). Also, the analysis tools provide insight and valid estimates of numerical measures of the defined system functionality threads, which represent the system's operational requirements as specified in the ORD. The tools are directly transferrable and applicable to test and evaluation exercise events which are conducted in support of the development and acquisition of systems and equipment. Once the levels of system performance have been defined, the Paradigm generates a quantitative database that becomes a useful tool in system tradeoffs and selection. Once the alternative system suites have been defined, the suites can be analyzed in terms of system functionality threads and their corresponding performance capabilities versus cost.

Ship design is often multidisciplinary involving several design elements with various types of objectives and constraints (O/C) some easily described as mathematical formulas, others better modeled as descriptive assertions. This paper describes a method based on fuzzy functions and an integrated performance index to model O/C using descriptive assertions to be used with mathematical formulas in optimization. Another issue addressed in this paper concerns the coordination of design elements when sequentially coupled, that is, when one leads the other and the performance of the follower depends greatly on the design of the leader. Based on neuro-fuzzy techniques, the method described here coordinates and optimizes sequentially coupled elements. The two methods are applied to machinery arrangement (MA) and pipe routing (PR). Preliminary models for optimization of MA and PR are described considering convenience, producibility: engine room size, interference and location as factors in the O/C set. Some test results from MA/PR applications are presented and discussed. The methods are generic and can be extended to other elements in ship design. They are mutually independent and may be used separately Two advantages of their use are an improvement in overall performance and a reduction in the need for redesign of elements.

Before joining the Hopkins faculty in 1994 he was a professor of ocean engineering for twenty-five years at the U.S. Naval Academy. In addition he has held full-time faculty positions at Swarthmore College Trinity College (Hartford) and the Catholic University of America. He was also a hydrodynamicist at the David Taylor Model Basin for more than four years. Prof. McCormick received his undergraduate degree in mathematics and physics from AmericanUniversity a masters degree in applied mechanics and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Catholic University a Ph.D. in civil engineering and a Sc.D. in engineering science from Trinity College in Dublin Ireland. He has over 100 publications including two books in the areas of ocean engineering wave mechanics and ocean wave energy conversion. He has also edited two books dealing with ocean engineering. In addition he is co-editor of both the journal Ocean Engineering and the Elsevier book series in ocean engineering. Dr. Rameswar Bhattacharyya:is professor of naval architecture at the U.S. Naval Academy where he has served for twenty-six years and adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at The Johns Hopkins University. Prior to joining the Naval Academy faculty he was a faculty member in the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan. His research experience includes ten years at both the Lubecker Flender-Werke and the Hamburg Ship Model Basin in Germany. His research has led to numerous publications including two books one in the area of ship dynamics and the other in the area of computer-aided ship design. Panels and all other structural components of surface ships and submarines vibrate when the vessel is underway. The vibratory motions are primarily excited by the power plant. At operational (design) speeds, panels vibrate in their fundamental modes and those associated with their higher harmonic frequencies. The panel motions have rather well-defined energy spectra, which depend on both the structural design, position of the panel and the rotational speed of the single or multiple power plants. The panel motions will interact with the vortices in the adjacent turbulent boundary layer. The interaction can result in either an increase in the frictional drag or a decrease. Because of this, the argument is made that the designs of the panels and their support systems should include considerations of this hydroelastic effect.
