Limited therapeutic options are available to effectively preventing atherosclerosis. Inflammatory endothelial cells, foamy macrophages, and high protease levels contribute to atherosclerotic plaque formation. Studies have shown that catechins effectively scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS), inhibit monocyte adhesion and reduce cholesterol levels, while nitric oxide (NO) enhances endothelial function. However, due to the poor stability and bioavailability of catechins and the toxicity from the burst release of current synthetic small molecules NO donor, effective delivery of these bioactive compounds to treat atherosclerosis is still a challenge. Herein, a catechin/protein-based NO donor co-delivery nanosystem was designed for combinatorial anti-atherosclerotic therapy. We engineered a (−)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)/NO-releasing protein co-assembled nanocomplex based on specific catechin-protein interactions. Furthermore, the nanocomplex was surface modified with fucoidan (Fu), a sulfated polysaccharide with anti-inflammatory activity. This nanocomplex exhibits sensitivity to ROS, ph, and enzymes. The Fu-functionalized nanoparticles specifically accumulates in atherosclerotic plaques mediated by P-selectin on inflamed endothelial cells and scavenger receptor A (SR-A) on foamy macrophages. Under environmental stimuli that simulate the condition of plaque, the nanoparticles are readily activated to release EGCG and NO in response to excess ROS and high protease levels, exerting the multi-synergistic anti-atherosclerosic effects on reducing monocyte adhesion, promoting NO production to proliferate endothelial cells, lowering ROS levels, and decreasing the foam cell formation in vitro, and reducing lipid accumulation, plaque size, and inflammatory cytokines release in high-fat diet-induced atherosclerosis model in ApoE−/− mice. A new approach to treating vascular blockages has been developed to overcome the limitations of current thrombolytic therapies. This approach involves biosafety and multimodal plasma-derived theranostic platelet vesicle incorporating iron oxide constructed nano-propellers platformed technology that possesses fluorescent and magnetic features and manifold thrombus targeting modes. The platform is capable of being guided and visualized remotely to specifically target thrombi, and it can be activated using near-infrared phototherapy along with an actuated magnet for magnetotherapy. In a murine model of thrombus lesion, this proposed multimodal approach showed an approximately 80 % reduction in thrombus residues. Moreover, the new strategy not only improves thrombolysis but also boosts the rate of lysis, making it a promising candidate for time-sensitive thrombolytic therapy. © 2023 The Authors

Objectives: To prospectively investigate associations of frailty and other predictor variables with functional recovery and health outcomes in middle-aged and older patients with trauma. design: Single-center prospective cohort study. Setting: Emergency department of Wan Fang Hospital in Taiwan. Participants: Trauma patients aged 45 and older. Measurements: Frailty was assessed with the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS). Injury mechanisms, pre-existing diseases, and fracture locations were recorded at baseline. The primary outcome was functional recovery assessed using the Barthel Index (BI). Secondary outcomes were new care needs, unscheduled return visits, and falls 3 months postinjury. Results: A total of 588 participants were included in the final analysis. For every one-point increase in the CFS, the multivariable-adjusted odds ratio (OR, 95% confidence interval [CI]) of failure to retain the preinjury BI was 1.34 (1.16–1.55);associations were consistent across levels of age and injury severities. Significant joint associations of frailty and age with poor functional recovery were observed. CFS was also associated with new care needs (OR for every one-point increase, 1.36, 95% CI, 1.17–1.58), unscheduled return visits (OR 1.26, 95% CI, 1.04–1.51), and falls (OR 1.23, 95% CI, 1.01–1.51). Other variables associated with failure to retain preinjury BI included road traffic accident and presence of hip fracture. Conclusion: Frailty was significantly associated with poor functional and health outcomes regardless of injury severity in middle-aged and older patients with trauma. Injury mechanisms and fracture locations were also significant predictors of functional recovery postinjury. © 2023 American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry

Objective: The study aimed to determine the incidence and risk factors associated with bone cement dislodgement in patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture following balloon kyphoplasty treatment. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 203 patients who underwent kyphoplasty in 255 vertebral bodies between January 2017 and december 2021. The patients were categorized into two groups: the bone cement dislodgment group (n = 16) and the non-bone cement dislodgement group (n = 239). Various patient characteristics and radiologic parameters were evaluated. Statistical analysis involved the assessment of the background homogeneity of the group by using independent sample t tests, chi-square tests, and Fisher's exact. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the impact of background variables on cement dislodgement. Results: The results revealed that split-type fracture (χ² = 31.706, p < 0.001), dISH (χ² = 18.827, p = 0.011), pedicle fracture (χ² = 22.246, p < 0.001), endplate deficit (χ² = 14.023, p < 0.001), posterior wall injury (χ² = 29.124, p < 0.001), and intervertebral vacuum cleft (χ² = 21.469, p < 0.001) were the factors that significantly differed between the two groups. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed posterior wall injury (OR = 12.983, p = 0.025) and intervertebral vacuum cleft (OR = 5.062, p = 0.024) to be independent risk factors. Conclusion: The incidence of bone cement dislodgement in our study was 6.3%. This study underscores the importance of using preoperative radiologic parameters to predict the risk of bone cement dislodgement following balloon kyphoplasty. © 2024 Elsevier Masson SAS

This study aims to investigate the distribution and ecological risk assessment of microplastics (MPs) in peatland areas located in Long An province, Vietnam's Mekong delta. In general, polyvinyl chloride (60.7%), polyethylene (25.8%), and polypropylene (11.9%) were the most abundant polymers determined in the thirty sediment samples. The hazard index (HI) remarked a level of III for MPs contamination in Tan Thanh and Thanh Hoa districts. The pollution load index (PLI) and potential ecological risk index (RI) indicated that the contamination risk of MPs polymer types in the studied sites is relatively high. According to PLI values, MPs levels of peatlands in Tan Thanh and Thanh Hoa are high and moderate, respectively, while the peatland sediments in duc Hue district are less contaminated. Furthermore, ecological risk indexes in the peatland areas were relatively high, with PLIoverall (level III);HIoverall (level V), and RIoverall (extreme danger). Hence, this study proposed a SWOT framework for challenges of MPs pollution in order to manage peatlands appropriately and minimize ecological risks. As a result, several practical strategies and appropriate approaches have been recommended to reduce microplastics towards a circular economy. These findings provide the initial quantitative assessment insights into hazard levels and ecological impacts of MPs in Vietnam's Mekong delta peatlands. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.

Osteoarthritis (OA) results from aging joints, injury, and obesity, emerging as an epidemic joint disease in addition to being a significant cause of pain disability. despite decades of efforts from scientists and physicians, the trend of the global increase in the incidence of OA does not slow down. As there are no effective pharmacotherapies able to reverse the degenerative process, cell-based and biological therapies for OA were invented and developed into a thriving field of regenerative medicine for orthopedics. First, autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) has been used to treat osteoarticular defects for over two decades. While ACI has demonstrated its capability to decelerate OA progression, there are still many issues that hamper its therapeutic efficacy. Therefore, researchers and physicians invented innovative biomaterials-assisted cell therapies, advanced surgical techniques for preserving primary chondrocytes' biological function and avoiding the donor-site mortality. Later, the discovery of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) revoluted cell therapies for cartilage repair. MSCs not only provide an alternative cell source with much higher proliferation rates but also have these advantages: no donor-site mortality, non-tumorigenic, and, most importantly, the capability of chondrogenic differentiation. This review paper explores the challenges associated with OA treatments using cell-based therapies and shares our vision for the future development of regenerative medicine for cartilage. © 2021 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Field-Effect Transistors (FETs) are the key building blocks in a wide range of electronic applications such as sensors and electrical switches. The emergence of Organic Field-Effect Transistors (OFETs) unveiled special features, which have taken the application of FETs into uncharted territories. These unique features include but are not limited to, low- cost processing, lightweight, mechanical flexibility, biocompatibility, broad material availability, etc. Similar to their inorganic counterparts, doping organic semiconductors (OSC) can significantly alter or improve their electrical and optoelectronic properties, resulting in doping induced OFET multi-functionalities. In this study, the impact of multi-doping on the OFET device performance and functionalities has been systematically investigated and evaluated under varying conditions of light, heat, and gate voltages. The experimental results appear to support the proposed hypothesis behind the multi-functionality of the system under study. Environmental pollution of heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) caused adverse impacts, has become one of the emerging concerns and challenges worldwide. Metal(loid)s can pose significant threats to living organisms even when present in trace levels within environmental matrices. Extended exposure to these substances can lead to adverse health consequences in humans. Removing HM-contaminated water and moving toward sustainable development goals (SdGs) is critical. In this mission, biochar has recently gained attention in the environmental sector as a green and alternative material for wastewater removal. This work provides a comprehensive analysis of the remediation of typical HMs by biochars, associated with an understanding of remediation mechanisms, and gives practical solutions for ecologically sustainable. Applying engineered biochar in various fields, especially with nanoscale biochar-aided wastewater treatment approaches, can eliminate hazardous metal(loid) contaminants, highlighting an environmentally friendly and low-cost method. Surface modification of engineered biochar with nanomaterials is a potential strategy that positively influences its sorption capacity to remove contaminants. The research findings highlighted the biochars' ability to adsorb HM ions based on increased specific surface area (SSA), heightened porosity, and forming inner-sphere complexes with oxygen-rich groups. Utilizing biochar modification emerged as a viable approach for addressing lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), and chromium (Cr) pollution in aqueous environments. Most biochars investigated demonstrated a removal efficiency >90 % (Cd, As, Hg) and can reach an impressive 99 % (Pb and Cr).
