Influence of Corrosion Inhibitors on Coated Carbon Steel at Sweet Corrosion condition of CO2

Corrosion has a significant economic and environmental impact on most oil sector facilities. One of the most widely used materials in these facilities is carbon steel. One major problem the oil sector faces is the corrosion and cracking of well motor housing of electrical submersible downhole pumps. These downhole pumps were used to inject water and thus raise production pressure. These pumps are mainly made of carbon steel and coated with epoxy as a corrosion-preventive method. Due to the high temperature and pressure, along with the presence of CO2 and injected water compositions, these pumps failed within a year of installation. This study explores the synergistic effects of zinc-rich epoxy coatings and eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors in mitigating sweet corrosion conditions. Advanced electrochemical techniques, including Linear Polarization Resistance, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), and Potentiodynamic Polarization, were employed to assess the efficacy of various combinations. The research identifies optimal inhibitor concentrations and coating strategies that enhance the corrosion resistance of carbon steel in high temperature, high-pressure environments. Results demonstrate that integrating a zinc-rich epoxy coating with 1000 ppm of water-soluble inhibitor B significantly reduces corrosion rates, offering a sustainable and cost-effective solution. The findings contribute valuable insights into developing environmental approaches for the protection of oilfield equipment, ensuring operational reliability and extended service life. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Shale, a complex sedimentary rock, exhibits heterogeneous mechanical behavior influenced by its mineral composition and microstructure. Nanoindentation scratch tests offer a promising method to probe the local mechanical properties and understand shale’s response to applied stress at the nanoscale. In this study, shale samples were prepared and subjected to nanoindentation scratch tests, with a systematic approach adopted to analyze critical load, scratch depth, and coefficient of friction (COF) in both parallel and perpendicular orientations to their bedding planes. The results highlight the impact of shale’s anisotropic nature on its mechanical properties. The parallel direction showed 50.18% and 13.37% greater critical loads than the perpendicular direction under scratching forces of 150 and 300 µN. Similarly, a scratch depth analysis reveals a 60.90% reduction of scratch penetration in the parallel direction, attributed to cohesive forces and grain alignment. The coefficient of friction, which fluctuates with lateral displacement, reflects the heterogeneity of shale’s mineral composition and the varying interaction between the indenter and different shale minerals. The obtained average adhesion work in the parallel orientation showed 34.95% more surface energy compared to the perpendicular orientation in the tested shales. These findings demonstrate that microstructural features directly influence fracture propagation and mechanical behavior. The insights gained from this study can be utilized to optimize hydraulic fracturing and drilling operations, and to ensure improved resource extraction efficiency and structural stability. This research evaluates factors that affect the nanostructure and the mechanical properties of shale obtained through indentation techniques. © ASCE.

Interfacial reactions in the Sn-9.0 wt.% Zn/Cu-Ti alloy (C1990 HP) couple

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of adding a small amount of Ti to a Cu-based alloy, specifically the commercial Hyper Titanium Copper alloy (C1990 HP), which contains Cu-3.28 wt.% Ti, on its interfacial reaction with Sn-9.0 wt.% Zn (SnZn) solder, using the liquid/solid reaction couple technique. Design/methodology/approach: The SnZn/C1990 HP couples were subjected to a reaction temperature of 240–270°C for a duration of 0.5–5 h. The resulting reaction couple was characterized using a scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer, electron probe microanalyzer and X-ray diffractometer. Findings: It was observed that the scallop-shaped CuZn5 and planar Cu5Zn8 phases were formed in almost all SnZn/C1990 HP couples. With increased reaction duration and temperature, the Cu-rich intermetallic compound (IMC)-Cu5Zn8 phase became a dominant IMC formed at the interface. The total thickness of the IMCs was increased with the increase in the reaction duration and temperature. The IMC growth obeyed the parabolic law, and the IMC growth mechanism was diffusion controlled. The activation energy of the SnZn/C1990 HP couple was 64.71 kJ/mol. Originality/value: This article presents an analysis of the IMC thickness in each sample using ImageJ software, followed by kinetic analysis using Origin software at various reaction temperatures of SnZn/C1990 HP in liquid/solid couples. The study also includes detailed reports on the morphology, interface composition and X-ray diffraction analysis, as well as the activation energy. The findings can serve as a valuable reference for electronic packaging companies that utilize C1990 HP substrates. © 2023, Emerald Publishing Limited.

This research investigates the potential of blending complementary lard oil with rubber seed oil as feedstock for biodiesel *** seed oil,obtained through hexane extraction using the Soxhlet method,contains the major fatty acids of oleic acid(C_(18:1)),palmitic acid(C_(16:0)),linoleic acid(C_(18:2)),and stearic acid(C_(18:0)),while rubber seed oil primarily consists of linoleic acid(C_(18:2)),oleic acid(C_(18:1)),linolenic acid(C_(18:3)),palmitic acid(C_(16:0)),and stearic acid(C_(18:0)).The least acid value of lard oil(0.55 mg KOH/g)can benefit of reducing soap formation of rubber seed oil during transesterification process in biodiesel production due to its substantial-high acid value(16.28 mg KOH/g).Blending at ratios below 80:20 volume ratio produced biodiesel exceeding 85%,utilizing CaO as a *** oil demonstrated a higher reaction rate constant(11.88×10^(-3)min^(-1))than rubber seed oil(2.11×10^(-3)min^(-1)),indicating a significant difference in *** acid value and free fatty acids in rubber seed oil correlated with lower reaction *** a mixture ratio below 80:20 volume ratio optimized reaction rates during biodiesel *** obtained from blends below 80:20 volume ratio met ASTM D6751 and EN 14214 standards,demonstrating suitability for bio-auto *** drawbacks of using rubber seed oil as a raw material for biodiesel production are overcome by blending with lard oil,giving rise to expanding renewable energy options for rural communities,community enterprises,and large-scale biodiesel production.

Tungsten(W)is the leading plasma-facing candidate material for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor and next-generation fusion *** impact of synergistic helium(He),irradiation-induced microstructural changes,and the corresponding thermal-mechanical property degradation of W are critically important but are not well understood *** the performance of W in fusion environments requires understanding the fundamentals of He-defect interactions and the resultant He bubble nucleation and growth in *** this study,He retention in helium-ion-implanted W was assessed using neutron depth profiling(NDP),laser ablation mass spectrometry(LAMS),and thermal desorption spectroscopy(TDS)following 10 keV room-temperature He implantation at various *** three experimental techniques enabled the determination of the He depth profile and retention in He-implanted W.A cluster dynamics model based on the diffusion-reaction rate theory was applied to interpret the experimental *** model successfully predicted the He spatial depth-dependent profile in He-implanted W,which was in good agreement with the LAMS *** model also successfully captured the major features of the He desorption spectra observed in the THDS *** NDP quantified total He concentration values for the samples;they were similar to those estimated by ***,the depth profiles from NDP and LAMS were not comparable due to several *** combination of modeling and experimentation enabled the identification of possible trapping sites for He in W and the evolution of He-defect clusters during the TDS thermal annealing process.

To understand typical features that could be imaged using ultrasonography (USG) in the training phases of medical students or practitioners, a lung phantom is required. The research team suggests using a gelatine-based phantom to demonstrate A-line reverberations in lung ultrasound. The ordinary gelatine-based phantom has the disadvantage of being too fragile and prone to breaking. The specific process was attempted on gelatine with a plasticizer and carrier agent to increase the gelatine's strength and elasticity. To simulate the A-lines, two different textures of gelatine layers are used, with other processes in between. A special procedure was used to set off the various acoustic impedances affecting reverberation physics with those varied textures. Based on USG image analysis, the proposed lung phantom material has some advantages: it is inexpensive and easy to find, despite its complicated procedures. Furthermore, it could be processed to have the desired properties and recycled after hardening with water bath melting. © 2023 IEEE.

Acute stroke is often followed by dysphagia. Currently, Videofluoroscopy Swallow Study (VFSS) is accepted as a gold standard to evaluate the severity of dysphagia. However, the usage of X-rays in VFSS limits the frequency of evaluation on the patient. Surface Electromyography (sEMG) can be used as a supportive tool for dysphagia evaluation. However, the size and rigidity of the conventional electrode used in sEMG made measuring the muscle activity on the neck muscle difficult. A flexible electrode is developed to tackle those problems. However, a characterization of the developed flexible electrode is needed to ensure that the flexible electrode's performance matches the conventional electrode's performance. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of the conventional and flexible electrode based on their spectral characteristics. Both electrodes are used to measure three dry swallow procedures. Spectral estimation of the measured signal is obtained using Welch's power spectral density and then compared for both electrodes. The signal-To-noise (SNR) is also calculated to see the fidelity of the obtained signal. As a result, the flexible electrode has comparable performance to the conventional electrode. © 2023 IEEE.
