Influences of homogenizing temperature and excess Si on age-hardening behavior of Al-0.93%Mg2Si alloy were investigated. From size distribution obtained by image analysis of secondary phase particles on SEM micrographs, amount of Mg-Si compound in the excess Si alloy was decreased from that in the as-cast state by homogenization at 823 K for 7.2 ks. The amount of Mg-Si compound after homogenization at 773 K lays between those in the as-cast and 823 K homogenized states. Estimating from the analyzed chemical composition, complete dissolving temperature of Mg and Si of the excess Si alloy is 782 K. Conductivity IACS% was decreased with elevating temperature of homogenization, confirming the decrease in amount of the Mg-Si compound and increase in solute concentration. Though the complete dissolving temperature of Mg and Si is elevated, excess addition of only 0.18%Si brings about a strengthening larger than the previously reported alloy containing 0.47 %Cu.

A new type of mixture fuel, sludge–oil–coal agglomerate (SOCA), was catalytically gasified with steam in a thermobalance reactor under atmospheric pressure. All the four catalysts studied (K2CO3, CaO, NiO and Fe2O3) were found capable of enhancing the steam gasification rate and significantly increasing the conversion of carbon. The ranking of catalytic activity was found to be K2CO3 CaO > NiO > Fe2O3. A modified volumetric-reaction model in the literature was used to describe the conversion behavior of the steam gasification studied by evaluating the kinetic parameters. Expressions of the apparent gasification rates for SOCA were presented for the design of catalytic gasification processes.

Wheat (Triticum L.) and oat (Avena L.) straw particles were subjected to delignifying pre-treatments to increase the accessibility of the polysaccharides. The pre-treated straw was digested by cell wall degrading enzymes to yield reducing sugars that may serve as precursor substances for bio-fuels. Fourier transform near infrared reflectance spectra were recorded and correlated to the total lignin content after pre-treatment and the amount of enzymatically released reducing sugars by means of partial least squares regression (PLSR). Lignin (7.9 - 20.7 %) and reducing sugars content (130 - 1000 mg/g) could be predicted in good correlation from near infrared spectra between 6900 and 5510 cm-1, a spectral region which is assigned to the 1st overtone of C-H, N-H, and O-H bond vibrations and assigned to lignin and polysaccharides of lignocellulosics.

This study explores different hybridization ratios of two types of parallel hybrid electric vehicles, a torque assist parallel hybrid and a full parallel hybrid, with equal power-to-weight ratio. The powertrain consist of an internal combustion engine, an electric motor, and a NiMH battery. The different hybridization ratios are compared by their optimal fuel consumption for eight different drive cycles. The optimal fuel consumption is determined using dynamic programming for each of the different hybridization ratios. In the full parallel hybrid the engine and motor can be decoupled while in the torque assist hybrid the engine and motor are always mechanically connected. Results show that there are not only lower fuel consumption for the full hybrid but the need for hybridization is lower than in the torque assist hybrid for all eight cycles. The hybridization ratio where a full hybrid have the same fuel consumption as the optimal torque assist hybrid can differ as much as 51%.

Through the photo-chemical machining process and plasma modification, the microfluidic chips were prepared with photo-active glass-ceramic as substrate and poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) as cover plate. The results show that the fabrication process of the microfluided chip is simplified, and the electroosmosis property is steady. The velocity of the electroosmosis of the microfluided chip is growing with the increasing of the buffer concentration, and the using of surfactants could improve the velocity of the electroosmosis. The voltage within 1800 V has good line relationship with the velocity of the electroosmosis.

In the present work, the mechanism of nickel coating on BN particles by hydrazine reduction was studied. A nickel sulfate - ammonium sulfate - ammonia - hydrazine hydrate plating system was employed. It was found that Pd on the surface of BN particles acted as an active center for nickel deposition at the initial stage of the process. Thereafter, Ni itself would act as an active center to catch Ni from the solution through the reaction: Ni2+ + 2Had∗ = > Ni + 2H+. The rate of the process was found to be controlled by the reaction at the interface under the present experimental conditions. A kinetic model was proposed on the basis of the experimental results. The model predictions were found to be in agreement with the experimental data.

The recent trend in mass customization (MC) has been in practice in many industries from on-line T-shirt shops all the way to boats, cars, and airplanes. One of the challenges in exercising mass customization is to manage unequal lead times among all associated partners in the production system. Asynchronous unequal lead times combined with the nature of the learning effect create asynchronous stochastic learning curves (ASLC) among partners in a mass customization production system. Mass customized products demand unequal amount of configuration and production times that can be difficult to plan by traditional deterministic scheduling methods. Discrete event simulation modeling is one of the capable tools to present such system. This work is to address one statistical method that can be applied to verify discrete event modeling of a mass customized production system of ASLCs.

This paper studies the stability robustness of a multirate system where sensing data are obtained n (n > 1 is an integer) times slower than the control variables are updated. The robust controller is designed for such systems by using the H infin technique. The procedure to check the robust stability of the controlled system is presented; and an illustrative example is given to show the effects of the value n on the robust stability of the system with the designed H infin controller.
