Nuanced dialects are a linguistic variant that pose several challenges for NLP models and techniques. One of the main challenges is the limited amount of datasets to enable extensive research and experimentation. We propose an approach for efficiently collecting nuanced dialectal datasets that are not only of high quality, but are versatile enough to be multipurpose as well. To test our approach we collect the KIND corpus, which is a collection of fine-grained Arabic dialect data. The data is short texts, and unlike many nuanced dialectal datasets, it is curated manually through social collaboration efforts as opposed to being crawled from social media. The collaborative approach is incentivized through educational gamification and competitions for which the community itself benefits from the open source dataset. Our approach aims to achieve: (1) coverage of dialects from under-represented groups and fine-grained dialectal varieties, (2) provide aligned parallel corpora for translation between Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and multiple dialects to enable translation and comparison studies, (3) promote innovative approaches for nuanced dialect data collection. We explain the steps for the competition as well as the resulting datasets and the competing data collection systems. The KIND dataset is shared with the research community. © 2024 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Many economically essential crops in Indonesia (such as coffee, tea, chocolate, or copra) require storage or drying under certain environmental conditions, especially temperature and humidity. The solar dryer dome, typically used for agricultural purposes in Indonesia, produces a sufficient amount of heat to increase the evaporation rate inside the dome and reduce the moisture content of the commodity. A hybrid solar dryer accompanied by a photovoltaic panel, fan, and ventilation system is generally suitable. The system can provide an optimum environment with minimum control. However, as the outdoor temperature and humidity change dramatically, such as at night time, more control is required. Based on Industry 4.0 technologies, we have developed a new kind of hybrid solar dryer that provides an optimum environment 24/7. The system, called Smart Dome 4.0, is an intelligent, low-cost, self-sufficient drying and storage system to support Indonesia Agriculture 4.0. The system has a local power generation unit to self-sustain the required energy and operate without connecting to the electricity grid. The system utilizes a machine-learning algorithm to predict the environmental condition and optimally uses self-generated electric power. The developed Smart Dome 4.0 technology is critical to producing a sustainable solar dome under drastic environmental dynamics. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

More than 1.3 million electric vehicles have been installed throughout the globe, and public charging networks for these vehicles are becoming increasingly common. It has been an area of interest to establish a plan for prioritizing the charging of electric vehicles (EVs) from a single network. This is particularly important in situations when the power source is restricted, such as with renewable energy, and for economic reasons (a higher price per KWh for quicker charging). When used in conjunction with electric vehicle (EV) charging, solar energy significantly decreases our reliance on fossil fuels. An electric car solar charger is created and constructed inside this system. In order to maximize the output from the solar panels, a dc-dc boost converter is used to transfer the voltage from the panels to the station's batteries. Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is also included. Power the charging station with energy from the solar panels so that the vehicle's rechargeable battery may be charged. The charging station's status can be monitored at any time via the Internet of Things. We have created a solar-powered charging station to provide simple accessibility. Solar power is both a sustainable and accessible renewable energy source. Arduino controller for light-dependent resistor (LDR) light intensity monitoring, solar cell energy observation, battery charging, and cloud storage. The core idea behind the article is the IoT Solar Charging Station (IoTSCS), and it is tested by comparing it to the Classical Solar Charging Station (CSCS), a more traditional scheme, in order to see how well the new scheme works.

Influence of mechanical compliance of the substrate on the morphology of nanoporous gold thin films

Nanoporous gold (np-Au) has found use in applications ranging from catalysis to biosensing where pore morphology plays a critical role in performance. While morphology evolution of bulk np-Au has been widely studied, knowledge about its thin film form is limited. This work hypothesizes that mechanical compliance of the thin film substrate can play a critical role in the morphology evolution. Via experimental and finite-element-analysis approaches, we investigate the morphological variation in np-Au thin films deposited on compliant silicone (PDMS) substrates of a range of thicknesses anchored on rigid glass supports and compare those to the morphology of np-Au deposited on glass. More macroscopic (10s to 100s of microns) cracks and discrete islands form in the np-Au films on PDMS compared to glass. Conversely, uniformly-distributed microscopic (100s of nanometers) cracks form in greater numbers in the np-Au films on glass than on PDMS, with the cracks located within the discrete islands. The np-Au films on glass also show larger ligament and pore sizes possibly due to higher residual stresses compared to the np-Au/PDMS films. The effective elastic modulus of the substrate layers decreases with increasing PDMS thickness, resulting in secondary np-Au morphology effects including a reduction in macroscopic crack-to-crack distance, an increase in microscopic crack coverage, and a widening of the microscopic cracks. However, changes in the ligament/pore widths with PDMS thickness are negligible, allowing for independent optimization for cracking. We expect these results to inform the integration of functional np-Au films on compliant substrates into emerging applications, including flexible electronics. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

The present study examines the Vehicle Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) exhibit unexpected behavior due to their high mobility and random network structure. Including ad hoc networks, a variety of problems, including repeated connected breakdowns, flexibility, multi-hop transmission of information, and information loss, impact Transmission Control Protocols (TCP). To overcome this problem, this paper suggests employing zone-based routing in VANETs while taking mobility into account. The routing technique is implemented with a hybrid optimization strategy. The most significant swarm intelligence (SI) algorithm for solving optimization issues is the chaotic particle swarm optimization (CPSO) algorithm. Due to its simplicity, which involves just a few parameters, CPSO has grown to be considered one of the most frequently used optimization techniques. When resolving challenging optimization problems, the routing algorithms experience high overhead or incompatibilities. A CPSO based shortest path routing method is presented for VANET that offers a high-quality path for connection among nodes, improving the distribution of packets percentage and preventing end-to-end delay, in order to enhanced routing effectiveness and throughput in prevailing approaches. These achievements show that CPSO performs adequately and is experiencing significant progress.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are widely used in various applications, from inspection and surveillance to transportation and delivery. Navigating UAVs in complex 3D environments is a challenging task that requires robust and efficient decision-making algorithms. This paper presents a novel approach to UAV navigation in 3D environments using a Curriculum-based Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) approach. The proposed method utilizes a deep neural network to model the UAV’s decision-making process and to learn a mapping from the state space to the action space. The learning process is guided by a reinforcement signal that reflects the performance of the UAV in terms of reaching its target while avoiding obstacles and with energy efficiency. Simulation results show that the proposed method has a positive trade off when compared to the baseline algorithm. The proposed method was able to perform well in environments with a state space size of 22 millions, allowing the usage in big environments or in maps with high resolution. The results demonstrate the potential of DRL for enabling UAVs to operate effectively in complex environments.

The performance of silicon-based thermoelectric energy generators is limited by the high thermal conductivity of silicon. Theoretical works have long proposed reducing the thermal conductivity by resonant phonon modes in nanopillars placed on the surface of silicon films. However, these predictions have never been confirmed due to the difficulty in the nanofabrication and measurements of such nanoscale systems. In this work, we report on the fabrication and measurements of silicon films with nanopillars as small as 12 nm in diameter. Our Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy experiments revealed that nanopillars indeed host resonant phonon modes. Yet, our thermal measurements using the micro time-domain thermoreflectance technique showed only a statistically insignificant difference between the thermal properties of silicon membranes with and without nanopillars. Results of this work contrast with the predictions of a substantial reduction in the thermal conductivity due to nanopillars and suggest refining the simulations to account for realistic experimental conditions. © 2023 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Wireless communication via unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has drawn a great deal of attention due to its flexibility in establishing line-of-sight (LoS) communications. However, in complex urban and dynamic environments, the movement of UAVs can be blocked by trees and high-rise buildings that obstruct directional paths. This problem can be effectively addressed by employing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS). To achieve this goal, accurate channel estimation in RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications is crucial. This paper proposes an accurate channel estimation model using long short-term memory (LSTM) for a multi-user RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications system. Simulation results showed that LSTM can effectively improve the channel estimation performance of RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications.

Polymer dielectrics endowed with high dielectric constant and high breakdown strength are critical for high-power systems and compact electronics to realize ultrahigh energy density. Nevertheless, the constrained energy density attainment of prevalent commercial polymers such as BOPP has been impeded by their inadequately satisfied dielectric constant. A polynorbornenes-BP (PNB-BP) is introduced in this paper, which features a rigid backbone composed of bicyclic aliphatic, while the incorporation of an electron acceptor and aromatic groups facilitates the formation of an enhanced dipole, endowing it with a satisfied dielectric constant of 3.72. Leveraging its high breakdown strength, the PNB-BP polymer achieves a notable energy density of 12.7 J/cm 3 at room temperature. Furthermore, the PNB-BP polymer exhibits commendable thermal properties, including a high glass transition temperature (Tg) of 220°C, and satisfactory thermal stability as evidenced by the observed dielectric constants. The design strategy uncovered in this work unveils the to realize the ultrahigh energy density of the capacitor by introducing the enhanced dipole.
