CuO/Cu2O microspheres were synthesized via rapid microwave-assisted spray pyrolysis within only 20 minutes, requiring no additional treatment. The microspheres, with an average size of 577 ± 192 nm, consist of nanostructured primary particles (crystallites) measuring 17.9 ± 2.8 nm. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the presence of well-crystallized phases, revealing significant lattice distortion in Cu2O. The material exhibited a bandgap of 1.28 eV, rendering it suitable for applications in photoelectrochemistry and photocatalysis. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Nowadays, the whole globe is paying great attention for the sustainable development, eco-friendly and economical production of nanostructures materials. With this motivation, the present work portrayed one-step ‘in-situ’ bioinspired green fabrication of Co₃O₄–reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (Co₃O₄–rGO NCs) for the first time utilizing an aqueous leaf extract of Neolamarckia cadamba. As-fabricated NCs were characterized by several analytical and electron microscopic techniques viz. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform-Infrared (FT-IR), Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to evaluate their phases, structure, shape, composition, chemical state, porosity, optical and morphological aspects. The XRD study revealed a cubic spinel symmetry of NCs, while crystallite size estimated around 25 nm. TEM spectroscopy exposed an average particle size 8–10 nm of Co₃O₄ grown on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (rGO NCs), whereas SEM analysis showed sharped microrubble-shaped morphology. The formation of NCs by doping metal oxide with rGO through in-situ method were confirmed by XRD, EDS, Raman, and XPS spectroscopy. The BET study estimated the specific surface area and pore size of NCs as 98 m²/g and 8.9 nm respectively. The Co₃O₄–rGO NCs demonstrated an effective bactericidal activity against S. aureus, E. coli, K. pneumoniae, and B. subtillis. Prominently it was found that, a significant antibacterial activity seen against E. coli and S. aureus at a concentration 0.1 mg/100 µL may be due to scaffold morphology, nanoscale-structures and nanoporosity of the NCs. Al alloys are very attractive in engineering applications that require a combination of low density and mechanical strength, such as in aeronautical and aerospace industry devices. Therefore, the search for alloys with higher specific strength is justified from environmental and economic points of view. This work aims to study the influence of cooling rates on the phase morphology and tensile properties of ternary Al-Mg-Sc alloys, whose composition covers the spectrum of low-Sc Al-Mg-Sc alloys. The ternary Al-3, -5, and -10wt.% Mg-0.1wt.% Sc alloys were processed by transient directional solidification. This process induces a wide range of cooling rates which causes the formation of a microstructural variety along the longitudinal cooling direction and, consequently, different tensile properties. Several characterization methods were employed, including: thermal analysis, x-ray diffraction (XRD) structural analysis, SEM-EDS, optical microscopy, CALPHAD, tensile tests, and fractography. Two major findings should be noted after fully characterizing the microstructures, the formed phases, and the tensile properties. Solidification evolution revealed that more Mg added resulted in higher solidification rates due to higher fluidity with more Mg. Furthermore, cell growth was mapped in the three alloy compositions while competing with dendrites. Second, although the Al-10 wt.% Mg-Sc alloy had more Mg in solid solution and slightly higher Portevin–Le Chatelier (PLC) severity, the Al-5 wt.% Mg-Sc alloy showed superior tensile strength due to the predominance of cells and thinner primary dendrites trunks forming its microstructure. © 2023, The Authors. The Human-Centered Internet of Things(HC-IoT)is fast becoming a hotbed of security and privacy *** users can establish a common session key through a trusted server over an open communication channel using a three-party authenticated key *** of the early authenticated key agreement systems relied on pairing,hashing,or modular exponentiation processes that are computationally intensive and *** order to address this problem,this paper offers a new three-party authenticated key agreement technique based on fractional chaotic *** new scheme uses fractional chaotic maps and supports the dynamic sensing of HC-IoT devices in the network architecture without a password *** projected security scheme utilized a hash function,which works well for the resource-limited HC-IoT *** results show that our new technique is resistant to password guessing attacks since it does not use a ***,our approach provides users with comprehensive privacy protection,ensuring that a user forgery attack causes no ***,our new technique offers better security features than the techniques currently available in the literature.

Laser irradiation has been investigated as a method of fabricating atomically-thin crystals from layered two-dimensional (2D) materials with precise thickness control. However, during laser irradiation, inevitable structural changes can occur in the 2D materials due to the high thermal energy, altering their physical and chemical properties and introducing disorder, which has hindered the study and use of the intrinsic properties of atomically-thin materials. In this study, we report a laser thinning method using a new coating material, a layered silica-based nanocomposite (SNC), that preserves the pristine crystal structure of a polymorphic 2D material, MoTe2, down to an atomically thin geometry. The nano-porous coating of layered silica-based nanocomposite (SNC) was robust against thermal heating and behaved as a good thermal-protective and oxygen-resistant material in the laser thinning process. Therefore, the SNC-coated MoTe2 flakes were successfully thinned down to atomically-thin geometry, while preserving their 2H structure. Accordingly, our SNC coating of 2D materials is a promising way to engineer the phase and geometry of polymorphic 2D materials, enabling versatile applications in various optoelectronic, spintronic, and electronic devices. © 2023, The Authors. Influence of the Corrosion Degree of Hot-Dipped Galvanized Reinforcements on its Bond Strength to Concrete

This work studies the behavior of hot-dipped galvanized steel against chloride corrosion and its effect on its bond strength to concrete. Two steel diameters were adopted and bond strength was assessed using a standardized pull-out test, followed by measuring different degrees of corrosion. The results show that the initial corrosion of hot-dipped galvanized steel, due to the high alkalinity of fresh concrete, does not affect the structural performance of reinforced concrete and that galvanized steel has superior bond strength to concrete than non-galvanized steel for small corrosion rates. However, it decreases as the corrosion degree significantly increases. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Learning from 2D: machine learning of 3D effective properties of heterogeneous materials based on 2D microstructure sections

Microstructure–property relationships are key to effective design of structural materials for advanced applications. Advances in computational methods enabled modeling microstructure-sensitive properties using 3D models (e.g., finite elements) based on microstructure representative volumes. 3D microstructure data required as input to these models are typically obtained from either 3D characterization experiments or digital reconstruction based on statistics from 2D microstructure images. In this work, we present machine learning (ML) approaches to modeling effective properties of heterogeneous materials directly from 2D microstructure sections. To this end, we consider statistical learning models based on spatial correlations and convolutional neural networks as two distinct ML strategies. In both strategies, models are trained on a dataset of synthetically generated 3D microstructures and their properties obtained from micromechanical 3D simulations. Upon training, the models predict properties from 2D microstructure sections. The advantage of the presented models is that they only need 2D sections, whose experimental acquisition is more accessible compared to 3D characterization. Furthermore, the present models do not require digital reconstruction of 3D microstructures. © 2023, CC BY.

Macroporous open-celled ceramic foams finds applications in numerous technological fields, like particle filters, insulating coatings, porous support for catalyst and photocatalyst processes, and even photoelectrochemical applications. In latter two, a macroporous open cell structure favors photoelectrochemical and photocatalyst reactions, due to its higher surface area. Many methods are used for producing these types of ceramics, specially the replica technique. In this simple method, the samples are obtained by impregnating a highly porous polymeric foam with a high solid loading ceramic slurry. After thermal treatment, the macroporous ceramic presents the structure of the polymeric foam used as template. Exceptionally complex and regular geometries can also be found in nature, which is the case of the Luffa sp sponge, that can replace the use of synthetic polymeric foams. In this work, microwave sinterability of porous ceramics obtained by impregnation of high solid loading ceramic slurries of nanostructured zinc oxide in natural Luffa sp fibrous sponges. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), xanthan gum (XG) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were assessed as binder agents. Ceramic slurries were prepared by dispersing nanostructured zinc oxide in distilled water (70% wt. ratio) using ammonium polyacrilate (APA) as deflocculant, followed by mixing in a high shear mixer (IKA Ultra-Turrax T25) for 10 minutes. After homogenization, binders were added and mixed in mechanical mixer for 10 minutes. The sponges (with dimensions of 2x2x1 cm) were carefully immersed in the ceramic slurry, squeezed to remove excess and then left to dry 24h in air. The dried ceramic foams were microwave heated at 550 °C during 10 minutes with 100 °C/min heating rate, followed by microwave sintering at 1150 and 1200 °C during 15 minutes with a 100 °C/min heating rate.
