A process, continuous wrapping tantalum barrier, has been developed and investigated in order to reduce the manufacturing cost. By avoiding inserting expensive tantalum tube, a long sheet barrier was directly used to wrap a prior restack. In this work, a tantalum barrier with 20 % overlap was wrapped onto sub-elements. Then 18-filament Nb 3 Sn plus 1 copper core restack billet was successfully drawn down and extruded into round wire as thin as a diameter of 0.84 mm. The longitudinal and cross-sectional images revealed most of barriers were continuous and intact. However, further experiments are needed to optimize the process in order to keep the all barriers continuous and intact after manufacturing.

Analytical solutions to the (3 + 1)-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the presence of chirp and for different diffraction and potential functions are found. We utilize a method we formulated to solve the Riccati equation for the chirp function that arises when the F-expansion technique and the homogeneous balance principle are applied to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Three specific examples of physical interest are considered in some detail.

We discuss the coupling of two identical atoms, separated by a metal or metamaterial slab, through surface modes. We show that the coupling through the surface modes can induce entanglement. We discuss how to control the coupling for the metal or metamaterial slab by adjusting the symmetrical and antisymmetrical property of the surface modes. We analyze the dispersion relation of the surface modes and study the parameter ranges that support the surface modes with the same properties. Our results have potential applications in quantum communication and quantum computation.

monodisperse ZnO quantum dots (QDs) with a particle size of about 5 nm have been synthesized. Isopropanol together with hexane were utilized to precipitate ZnO nanoparticles to form condensed phases, ranging from white flocculation, to gel-like fluid, and to transparent solid. The morphology and structure in the transparent ZnO solid was characterized by UV-vis, X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The mechanisms for the formation of transparent ZnO QDs close-packed structure were monitored via UV-vis spectra, and found likely to be a colloidal crystal. The colloidal crystal is transparent and absorbs UV light efficiently. Possible conditions for the formation of the ZnO QDs colloidal crystal are discussed.
Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly was used to deposit transparent, highly conductive thin films using aqueous solutions of nanotubes stabilized by deoxycholate (DOC) and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA). Thre...

Fe2Al5 contains a Fe-Al matrix through which are threaded disordered one-dimensional chains of overlapping Al sites. We report magnetic, nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NmR), and specific-heat measurements addressing its magnetic and vibrational properties. The Curie-type susceptibility is found to be due to dilute moments, likely due to wrong-site Fe atoms. A27l NmR shift and spin-lattice relaxation measurements confirm these to be indirectly coupled through a Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida-type interaction. Specific-heat results indicate a large density of low-energy vibrational modes. These excitations generate a linear-T contribution to the specific heat, which however freezes out below about 10 K. These results are attributed to the presence of anharmonic vibrational modes associated with the disordered structural chains.

We have synthesized type-VIII and type-I Ba8Ga16Sn30 clathrates by using different annealing treatments, confirmed with XRD and electron microprobe measurements. NmR lineshape measurements identified a broad resonance corresponding to first-order-shifted satellites. Simulations for the type I structure based on first principles calculations provided an excellent fit to the data, with the best agreement provided by the calculated lowest-energy configuration, having no Ga-Ga bonds. These results allow us to address local configurations within the random type-I alloy, as well as atomic displacements and bond-length distributions, which we compare to experiment.
