Classical spin liquids (CSLs) are intriguing states of matter that do not exhibit long-range magnetic order and are characterized by an extensive ground-state degeneracy. Adding quantum fluctuations, which induce dynamics between these different classical ground states, can give rise to quantum spin liquids (QSLs). QSLs are highly entangled quantum phases of matter characterized by fascinating emergent properties, such as fractionalized excitations and topological order. One such exotic quantum liquid is the Z2 QSL, which can be regarded as a resonating valence bond (RVB) state formed from superpositions of dimer coverings of an underlying lattice. In this work, we unveil a hidden large-scale structural property of archetypal CSLs and QSLs known as hyperuniformity, i.e., normalized infinite-wavelength density fluctuations are completely suppressed in these systems. In particular, we first demonstrate that classical ensembles of close-packed dimers and their corresponding quantum RVB states are perfectly hyperuniform in general. Subsequently, we focus on a ruby-lattice spin liquid that was recently realized in a Rydberg-atom quantum simulator, and show that the QSL remains effectively hyperuniform even in the presence of a finite density of spinon and vison excitations, as long as the dimer constraint is still largely preserved. Moreover, we demonstrate that metrics based on the framework of hyperuniformity can be used to distinguish the QSL from other proximate quantum phases. These metrics can help identify potential QSL candidates, which can then be further analyzed using more advanced, computationally-intensive quantum numerics to confirm their status as true QSLs. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) hold significant promise for solid-state batteries due to their ability to combine the benefits of inorganic fillers and polymer matrices. However, agglomeration of inorganic fillers can disrupt the formation of a percolation pathway, hindering lithium-ion transport. Here, we developed a stable, porous, and interconnected 3-dimentional LLTO (Li0.33La0.557TiO3) nanofiber scaffold and fabricate CPEs using in-situ crosslinked polyethylene glycol (xPEG). The resulting self-standing LLTOxPEG-65 achieved an ionic conductivity of 5.0 × 10−4 S/cm at 30 °C and a critical current density of 0.5 mA/cm2. A significantly lower activation energy (~0.2 eV) was observed in LLTOxPEG-65 compared to pristine xPEG (0.44 eV), indicating a transition of lithium-ion transport pathways from xPEG to the LLTO scaffold. However, increasing the xPEG content led to a decrease in ionic conductivity and a rise in activation energy, approaching that of pristine xPEG. DFT calculations revealed that Li+ transport in the [010] and [001] planes of LLTO predominantly takes place within the bulk rather than along the surface, while a concerted diffusion mechanism was observed in the [100] plane. Additionally, mesoscale-level computational analysis indicated that the high LLTO scaffold fraction (90 wt %) can ensure transport through the bulk of the fibers even with larger interfacial charge transfer resistance, around 1 Ω·cm2 between LLTO and xPEG. Presence of the highly percolated LLTO scaffold helps to promote efficient Li+ transport through the bulk of LLTO. © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Topology can manifest itself in colloids when quantified by invariants like Euler characteristics of nonzero-genus colloidal surfaces, albeit spherical colloidal particles are most often studied, and colloidal particles with complex topology are rarely considered. On the other hand, singular defects and topological solitons often define the physical behavior of the molecular alignment director fields in liquid crystals. Interestingly, nematic liquid crystalline dispersions of colloidal particles allow for probing the interplay between topologies of surfaces and fields, but only a limited number of such cases have been explored so far. Here, we study the hybridization of topological solitons, singular defects, and topologically nontrivial colloidal particles with the genus of surfaces different from zero in a chiral nematic liquid crystal phase. Hybridization occurs when distortions separately induced by colloidal particles and LC solitons overlap, leading to energy minimization-driven redistribution of director field deformations and defects. As a result, hybrid director configurations emerge, combining topological features from both components. We uncover a host of director field configurations complying with topological theorems, which can be controlled by applying electric fields. Rotational and translational dynamics arise due to the nonreciprocal evolution of the director fields in response to alternating electric fields of different frequencies. These findings help define a platform for controlling topologically hyper-complex colloidal structures and dynamics with electrically reconfigurable singular defects and topological solitons induced by colloidal handlebodies. The use of polysaccharides in drug delivery systems has attracted increasing interest due to their functional properties. Among these, alginate (ALG) and chitosan (CH) are promising candidates for sustained drug delivery as they respond to pH, ensuring that the compound is released in a desired area. In this research physical hydrogels based on alginate and chitosan (ALG/CH) were prepared by varying the synthesis parameters (ALG at ALG/CH ratio, pH and speed stirring) and the effects of such parameters on hydrogels’ chemical and physical structure were accessed through several techniques. Also, the effects synthesis parameters on fractional release (Fmax), half time (t1/2) and percentage encapsulation efficiency (EE%), as the evaluated responses, were statically measured using a factorial design. Analysis through Raman and FTIR spectroscopies revealed the modes and bands corresponding to the precursors, confirming the formation of physically cross-linked hydrogels. The porous structure of the materials was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The swelling capacities of the hydrogels were analyzed at different pHs (5.4 and 7.4) and demonstrated that absorption increases in slightly acidic media. TG/DTG and Micro-CT analyzes of the sample with the greatest swelling showed that the degradation of the hydrogel occurs in two endothermic events and that the material possesses several sized and interconnected pores. The doxorubicin (DOX) release study showed that the release rate is higher as the higher proportion of CH relative to ALG. The factorial design analysis indicated the statistically significant factors in the DOX release tests. Thus, the results suggest that ALG/CH hydrogels can be tuned during their preparation to achieve optimal structure for pH-responsive to be applied for DOX releasing system. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Contemporary society heavily relies on systems that process, store, and transmit sensitive and confidential information. However, defining what constitutes critical assets and how to categorize them presents challenges. In this context, applying criteria for classifying Critical Infrastructures (CIs) is essential to determine their criticality for information owners. This study aims to identify which criteria are used to classify an asset as part of CIs based on data from various nations. The methodology adopted involved analyzing public documents that evaluated the definitions and assessment criteria of CIs from 12 countries and organizations. The study's results provide a technical understanding of the criteria used to define Critical Infrastructures CIs among the analyzed countries, highlighting a predominance of criteria related to people, social aspects, economic factors, geographic considerations, and interdependencies. These findings indicate a consistent alignment among the studied nations regarding the criteria that define their respective CIs. These findings have practical implications for risk and asset managers, equipping them with the necessary knowledge to apply CI assessment methodologies effectively. © 2025 The Author(s)

This study concerns alkaline fluorides such as CaF2 and BaF2 contained in gadolinium phosphate glass doped with CeF3, which were synthesized using a melt-quenching technique. Ce3+ was activated in both glasses and a comparative study of their optical, luminescence and scintillation behaviors was conducted. The results found that the higher atomic weight of BaF2 glass makes higher density compared with CaF2 glass, resulting in more integral scintillation efficiency. The quantum yield of BaF2-glass (PLZGdBafCe0.5) is also higher than that of CaF2-glass (PLZGdCafCe0.5). Energy transfer efficiency from Gd3+ to Ce3+ shows similar values, reflecting that the higher photoluminescence intensity of BaF2-glass comes from the efficiency of the luminescence center (Ce3+ ion). Photoluminescence and scintillation decay times were measured and found to be in the range of nanoseconds. XANES measurement was used to confirm the oxidation state and ratio between Ce3+/Ce4+. Moreover, the practical application of the glass scintillator was succeeded by micro-imaging using synchrotron X-ray. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

In the fusion-based welding processes, filler materials are commonly used to adjust and improve the composition of the fusion zone with the aim of optimizing both microstructure and mechanical properties. However, in the field of welding high entropy alloys, the influence of different filler materials on the microstructure and mechanical response is still scarce, owing to the yet incipient usage of welding technologies for these novel, advanced engineering alloys. To bridge this knowledge gap, Inconel 625 filler wire was used during gas metal arc welding of the well-known CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy. To systematically analyze the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of the welded joints, multiscale characterization techniques were employed. It is shown that the different regions of the welded joint possess distinct microstructural features due to the weld thermal cycle, which is further compounded in the fusion zone by the introduction of the filler material. The use of Inconel 625 filler promotes a solid solution strengthening effect in the fusion zone and became the main contributor to the yield strength of this region (302 MPa (via solid solution strengthening) vs 478 MPa (yield stress from tensile experiments). Since Hall-Petch strengthening is predominant in both base material and heat affected zone, but not on the fusion zone due to the large grain structure that developed, the addition of Inconel 625 filler demonstrates to be a feasible approach to increase the typically low fusion zone strength. By coupling microstructural characterization with mechanical property analysis, aided by the calculation of the strengthening mechanisms, we unveil processing, microstructure, property relationships, providing a broader basis for the widespread application of gas metal arc welding for high entropy alloys. © 2025 The Authors

The growing shortage of freshwater resources has spurred the development of innovative and sustainable desalination technologies. This study presents a thermo-economic analysis of an innovative hemispherical solar still (HSS) enhanced with a novel Metal-Organic Framework (MOF), specifically Iron-Aluminum Benzene Tricarboxylate. The MOF was characterized through structural, morphological, and optical investigations and integrated into the HSS using two enhancement methods: (I) as a nanofluid (MOF-NF) at a 1 wt% concentration in the feedwater, and (II) as a heat localization material (MOF-HL) by dispersing it on a black cotton wick that spans the basin surface. An external condenser (EC) was added to further enhance condensation in a subsequent configuration. Three identical HSS systems were used for comparative performance evaluation: a baseline unit (CHSS) and two modified systems, one with a condenser and one without. The results indicated that both MOF-based approaches significantly improved the thermal performance and freshwater yield of the HSS. Notably, the MOF-HL configuration outperformed the MOF-NF configuration across all performance metrics. The configuration designated as MOF-HL-EC achieved the highest rate of freshwater production, with a 96.16 % increase in distillate productivity compared to the CHSS. Additionally, this configuration exhibited exergy and energy efficiencies of 3.18 % and 61.1 %, respectively—improvements of 80.85 % and 95.72 % over the traditional system. Economically, the MOF-HL-EC configuration reduced the production cost of distilled water to 0.0115$ per liter, marking a reduction of 25.29 %. © 2025 The Institution of Chemical Engineers
