This article gives a capsule view of research on rough set theory and applications ongoing at universities and laboratories in China. Included in this capsule view of rough set research is a brief description of the following things: Chinese research groups on rough set with their URLs for web pages, names of principal researchers (supervisors), numbers of graduate students, and topics being investigated. Statistical summaries showing the growth in the research on rough set theory and application in China are included. In addition, an introduction summarizing the research interests of Chinese researchers is included in this article. The contribution of this article is a complete overview of the principal research directions in rough set theory and its applications in China. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper presents a novel approach to clustering using a simple accuracy-based Learning Classifier System. Our approach achieves this by exploiting the evolutionary computing and reinforcement learning techniques inherent to such systems. The purpose of the work is to develop an approach to learning rules which accurately describe clusters without prior assumptions as to their number within a given dataset. Favourable comparisons to the commonly used k-means algorithm are demonstrated on a number of datasets. © 2006 IEEE.

We propose a coalgebraic definition of weak bisimulation for a class of coalgebras obtained from bifunctors over the category Set. Weak bisimilarity for a system is obtained as strong bisimilarity of a transformed system. The transformation consists of two steps: First, the behaviour on actions is expanded to behaviour on finite words. Second, the behaviour on finite words is taken modulo the hiding of invisible actions, yielding behaviour on equivalence classes of words closed under silent steps. The coalgebraic definition is justified by two correspondence results, one for the classical notion of weak bisimulation of Milner and another for the notion of weak bisimulation for generative probabilistic transition systems as advocated by Baier and Hermanns. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. UABgrid is a collaboration between academic and administrative IT units at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). UABgrid provides a Web-based grid client environment, access to shared campus computational resources, and user identities defined by the authoritative campus identity provider. A Weblogin service leveraging UAB's authoritative identity directory is provided for grid authentication. Previous integrations of institutional identity management and grid authentication depended on a Kerberos environment and use of KX.509. We accomplish similar functionality in a non-Kerberos environment by leveraging our Weblogin service to drive applications which require grid credentials. The UABgrid registration process employs the Weblogin service to generate certificates and keys signed by our UABgridCA and automatically provisions accounts for UABgrid users based on resource center policies. After successful registration, UABgrid leverages the Weblogin service to allow users to access resources and to submit jobs using only a Web browser and their familiar username and password.

An approach to analyze the period of a signal based on Hilbert-Huang Transform is presented in this paper. For an approximately periodic signal which contains plenty of high frequency components, the relation between its period and its main frequency is established. Our main result is that, for an approximately periodic signal which contains plenty of high frequency components, its period can be estimated accurately according to its main-frequency distribution. By applying the technique on texture analysis, a novel method to extract the perodicity features of a texture image is developed, which can be used in texture classification, segmentation, recognition and other applications. © 2004 IEEE.

This paper provides a brief development roadmap of the neural network sensitivity analysis, from 1960's to now on. The two main streams of the sensitivity measures: partial derivative and stochastic sensitivity measures are compared. The partial derivative sensitivity (PD-SM) finds the rate of change of the network output with respect to parameter changes, while the stochastic sensitivity (ST-SM) finds the magnitudes of the output perturbations between the original training samples and the perturbed samples, in statistical sense. Their computational complexities are compared. Furthermore, how to evaluate multiple parameters of the neural network with or without correlation will be explored too. In addition, the differences of them in the application of supervised pattern classification problems are also discussed. The evaluations are based on three major applications of sensitivity analysis in supervised pattern classification problems: feature selection, sample selection and neural network generalization assessment ST-SM and PD-SM of the RBFNN will be used for investigations.

Extracting and using goal orderings is a way to improve efficiencies of planning algorithms. During extracting goal orderings, some of existing methods can only deal with atomic goals of a specific problem that will introduce too much redundant work, and the others deal with predicates of a planning domain that can not extract enough goal orderings. The paper addressed an abstract method to extract goal orderings. The method used unification to identify different instantiations of a predicate when dealing with predicates. It can not only reduce redundant work during extracting, but also get enough goal orderings.

It is generally believed that the queueing behavior of an arrival process is most sensitive to its first and second order statistics. In this paper, we show that this is not generally true. We consider the queueing behavior of two classes of sources. The first class is the superposition of multiple discrete autoregressive sources of order 1 (referred to as DAR(1) sources), and the second class is a single DAR(1) source having the same first and second order statistics as the superposed source. In particular, we show that in the homogeneous case, the mean queue lengths of the two models are identical, but the queue length variances of the two models are significantly different depending on the correlation of individual sources.

We investigate whether intermediaries can make a profit in an information economy. We use evolutionary agent-based simulations to address this issue. We model a trade network game where boundedly rational consumers have to decide which links to form to sellers (profit maximizing producers or intermediaries). Our main conclusion is that intermediaries that have better knowledge about the market than the average consumer will continue to exist and make a profit if market dynamics are sufficiently complex.
