Advancements in neuromorphic computing have given an impetus to the development of systems with adaptive behavior,dynamic responses,and energy efficiency *** charge-based or emerging memory technologies such as memristors have been developed to emulate synaptic plasticity,replicating the key functionality of neurons—integrating diverse presynaptic inputs to fire electrical impulses—has remained *** this study,we developed reconfigurable metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitors(MOSCaps)based on hafnium diselenide(HfSe2).The proposed devices exhibit(1)optoelectronic synaptic features and perform separate stimulus-associated learning,indicating considerable adaptive neuron emulation,(2)dual light-enabled charge-trapping and memcapacitive behavior within the same MOSCap device,whose threshold voltage and capacitance vary based on the light intensity across the visible spectrum,(3)memcapacitor volatility tuning based on the biasing conditions,enabling the transition from volatile light sensing to non-volatile optical data *** reconfigurability and multifunctionality of MOSCap were used to integrate the device into a leaky integrate-and-fire neuron model within a spiking neural network to dynamically adjust firing patterns based on light stimuli and detect exoplanets through variations in light intensity.

Lexicon-based fine-tuning of multilingual language models for low-resource language sentiment analysis

Pre-trained multilingual language models (PMLMs) such as mBERT and XLM-R have shown good cross-lingual transferability. However, they are not specifically trained to capture cross-lingual signals concerning sentiment words. This poses a disadvantage for low-resource languages (LRLs) that are under-represented in these models. To better fine-tune these models for sentiment classification in LRLs, a novel intermediate task fine-tuning (ITFT) technique based on a sentiment lexicon of a high-resource language (HRL) is introduced. The authors experiment with LRLs Sinhala, Tamil and Bengali for a 3-class sentiment classification task and show that this method outperforms vanilla fine-tuning of the PMLM. It also outperforms or is on-par with basic ITFT that relies on an HRL sentiment classification dataset.

Optoelectronic devices are advantageous in in-memory light sensing for visual information processing,recognition,and storage in an energy-efficient ***,in-memory light sensors have been proposed to improve the energy,area,and time efficiencies of neuromorphic computing *** study is primarily focused on the development of a single sensing-storage-processing node based on a two-terminal solution-processable MoS2 metal-oxide-semiconductor(MOS)charge-trapping memory structure—the basic structure for charge-coupled devices(CCD)—and showing its suitability for in-memory light sensing and artificial visual *** memory window of the device increased from 2.8 V to more than 6V when the device was irradiated with optical lights of different wavelengths during the program ***,the charge retention capability of the device at a high temperature(100 ℃)was enhanced from 36 to 64%when exposed to a light wavelength of 400 *** larger shift in the threshold voltage with an increasing operating voltage confirmed that more charges were trapped at the Al_(2)O_(3)/MoS_(2) interface and in the MoS_(2) layer.A small convolutional neural network was proposed to measure the optical sensing and electrical programming abilities of the *** array simulation received optical images transmitted using a blue light wavelength and performed inference computation to process and recognize the images with 91%*** study is a significant step toward the development of optoelectronic MOS memory devices for neuromorphic visual perception,adaptive parallel processing networks for in-memory light sensing,and smart CCD cameras with artificial visual perception capabilities.

Electricity demand forecasting at distribution and household levels using explainable causal graph neural network

Forecasting electricity demand is an essential part of the smart grid to ensure a stable and reliable power grid. With the increasing integration of renewable energy resources into the grid, forecasting the demand for electricity is critical at all levels, from the distribution to the household. Most existing forecasting methods, however, can be considered black-box models as a result of deep digitalization enablers, such as deep neural networks, which remain difficult to interpret by humans. Moreover, capture of the inter-dependencies among variables presents a significant challenge for multivariate time series forecasting. In this paper we propose eXplainable Causal Graph Neural Network (X-CGNN) for multivariate electricity demand forecasting that overcomes these limitations. As part of this method, we have intrinsic and global explanations based on causal inferences as well as local explanations based on post-hoc analyses. We have performed extensive validation on two real-world electricity demand datasets from both the household and distribution levels to demonstrate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance.

A Genetic Algorithm for Solving Sudoku Based on Multi-Armed Bandit Selection

In this paper, we introduce a Genetic Algorithm based Upper Confidence Bound (GA-UCB), an innovative hybrid genetic algorithm integrating Multi-Armed Bandit (MAB). It effectively addresses the challenges of solving large and intricate Sudoku puzzles, thus overcoming the constraints of traditional genetic algorithms. In GA-UCB, reinforcement learning (RL) is applied to simulate parent selection and crossover. By learning the optimal parent selection within a given population, the population evolves. Based on this technology, GA-UCB demonstrates improved results in solving complex Sudoku puzzles. GA-UCB is compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms on Sudoku puzzles of different difficulty levels and shows a 55% improvement in convergence speed compared to previous research results, particularly in the most challenging instance among the six Sudoku puzzle instances tested © 2018 IEEE.

Towards Early Diagnosis and Intervention: An Ensemble Voting Model for Precise Vital Sign Prediction in Respiratory Disease

Worldwide, cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases account for approximately 19 million deaths annually. Evidence indicates that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic directly contributes to increased blood pressure, cholesterol, as well as blood glucose levels. Timely screening of critical physiological vital signs benefits both healthcare providers and individuals by detecting potential health issues. This study aims to implement a machine learning-based prediction and classification system to forecast vital signs associated with cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases. The system predicts patients' health status and notifies caregivers and medical professionals when necessary. Utilizing real-world data, a linear regression model inspired by the Facebook Prophet model was developed to predict vital signs for the upcoming 180 seconds. With 180 seconds of lead time, caregivers can potentially save patients' lives through early diagnosis of their health conditions. For this purpose, a Naïve Bayes classification model, a Support Vector Machine model, a Random Forest model, and genetic programming-based hyper tunning were employed. The proposed model outdoes previous attempts at vital sign prediction. Compared with alternative methods, the Facebook Prophet model has the best mean square in predicting vital signs. A hyperparameter-tuning is utilized to refine the model, yielding improved short- and long-term outcomes for each and every vital sign. Furthermore, the F-measure for the proposed classification model is 0.98 with an increase of 0.21. The incorporation of additional elements, such as momentum indicators, could increase the model's flexibility with calibration. The findings of this study demonstrate that the proposed model is more accurate in predicting vital signs and trends. IEEE

Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) is indeed a fascinating consensus algorithm used on various blockchain platforms. It was designed to address some of the scalability and energy consumption issues associated with Proof of Work (PoW) while maintaining decentralization to a certain extent. But, DPoS has some disadvantages in the distribution of profit share for stake forwarding nodes to delegate nodes. The profit share is controlled by the delegate nodes rather than the staking nodes or token holder voting nodes. Here, in Profit Demand Delegated Proof of Stake (PD-DPoS), we introduced a new mechanism to facilitate the token holder voting nodes to demand a rate of profit/profit share. PD-DPoS will encourage the delegate nodes to invest in infrastructure for high connectivity and fast computing crypto systems. As the system builds targeting fast and reliable computing by extending the opportunity of demanding profit share for token holder voter nodes will experimentally perform and prove better than the DPoS. © 2024 IEEE.

Extreme events jeopardize power network operations, causing beyond-design failures and massive supply interruptions. Existing market designs fail to internalize and systematically assess the risk of extreme and rare events. Efficiently maintaining the reliability of renewable-dominant power systems during extreme weather events requires co-optimizing system resources, while differentiating between large/rare and small/frequent deviations from forecast conditions. To address this gap in both research and practice, we propose managing the uncertainties associated with extreme weather events through an additional reserve service, termed extreme reserve. The procurement of extreme reserve is co-optimized with energy and regular reserve using a large deviation theory chance-constrained (LDT-CC) model, where LDT offers a mathematical framework to quantify the increased uncertainty during extreme events. To mitigate the high additional costs associated with reserve scheduling under the LDT-CC model, we also propose an LDT model based on weighted chance constraints (LDT-WCC). This model prepares the power system for extreme events at a lower cost, making it a less conservative alternative to the LDTCC model. The proposed market design leads to a competitive equilibrium while ensuring cost recovery. Numerical experiments on an illustrative system and a modified 8-zone ISO New England system highlight the advantages of the proposed market design. © 2024 IEEE.

Cybersecurity is a field that unifies concepts from various fundamental areas: mathematics, physics, computer science, electronics, sociology, and management. This field is challenging for government authorities, academic institutions, and private entities alike. By pooling the resources of these three actors, we can build secure and resilient systems. In this context, several challenges emerge, such as the exchange of knowledge and expertise, collaborative research projects, the organization of internships and scholarship programs, the exchange of threat intelligence, training, and awareness, and finally, the standardization and regulatory component. The evolving nature of cyber threats and the growing sophistication of attackers necessitate robust and adaptable security frameworks. A "defense-in-depth security model" is mandatory in this context as it offers multiple layers of protection, ensuring that if one defense mechanism fails, others remain in place to prevent breaches. In this paper, we propose a defense-in-depth security model and highlight how key points within the model can be interconnected. © 2024, Politechnica University of Bucharest. All rights reserved.
