Vortices and black holes set the scene for many interesting dynamical processes in physics. Here, we study the dynamical instability of quantized vortices and rotational superradiance around rotating black holes, illustrating in the process that the same physics is at play in these two seemingly disparate phenomena. We also compare the instability of the vortex to the black hole bomb instability, which occurs for massive scalar fields in the Kerr spacetime. Taking inspiration from the analogy between black hole bomb modes and the hydrogen spectrum, the vortex instability is compared with nuclear resonances involved in α decay.
We develop a robust cut finite element method for a model of diffusion in fractured media consisting of a bulk domain with embedded cracks. The crack has its own pressure field and can cut through the bulk mesh in a v...

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has gained a tremendous amount of attention as a key enabler of fifth-generation cellular systems. The majority of the vast literature on massive MIMO is based on fully digital processing, where each antenna element in the massive array is equipped with an up/down-conversion chain. Unlike previous works, we present a suite of greedy algorithms using pure analog processing which approach the performance of uplink digital zero-forcing (ZF) combining. Based on successive nulling and amplification processing (SNAP), the proposed techniques are evaluated in a multi-user context over a range of heterogeneous channel models. Rigorous comparisons are then made to other benchmark analog techniques, digital ZF and an upper bound on analog processing. The most promising approach is shown to have very low-complexity and robustness against a variety of channel conditions, while providing useful performance gains.

We show that the dynamical instability of quantum vortices with more than a single unit of circulation results from a superradiant bound state inside the vortex core. We then reveal a striking behavior of the system in the nonlinear regime. Counter to the expectation that the instability should produce well-separated vortices, the system evolves into a bound state of corotating singularities orbiting within a few healing lengths of each other, undergoing modulations in separation. During these modulations, kinetic energy is traded back and forth between sound waves and vortical degrees of freedom.

A severe limitation of current acoustic metasurfaces remains in their modest tunability to meet multifrequency requirements and alterable functionalities on demand. Here, a reconfigurable curved acoustic metasurface for acoustic cloaking and illusion is reported. The structure is composed of an array of tunable helical units to break this limitation and realize continuously versatile sound manipulations. We theoretically, numerically and experimentally investigate the channel length represented by the helical depth, which is used to achieve full 2π phase shift continuously over the frequency range from 2 to 7 kHz. As pragmatic examples, we present by full-wave numerical simulations the concept of a curved metasurface for the continuously tunable acoustic multifunction, including broadband carpet cloaking and ground illusion at a wide working band. Then, we experimentally demonstrate these functionalities by showing an excellent effect to restore the disturbed reflective field from a cloaked object or to mimic an arbitrary shaped ground.
Classifying samples in incomplete datasets is a common aim for machine learning practitioners, but is non-trivial. Missing data is found in most real-world datasets and these missing values are typically imputed using...
