We consider the problem of active learning in the context of spatial sampling for boundary estimation, where the goal is to estimate an unknown boundary as accurately and quickly as possible. We present a finite-horizon search procedure to optimally minimize both the final estimation error and the distance traveled for a fixed number of samples, where a tuning parameter is used to trade off between the estimation accuracy and distance traveled. We show that the resulting optimization problem can be solved in closed form and that the resulting policy generalizes existing approaches to this problem.

This research aims to obtain an overview of innovation, development and change in response to Covid-19 *** schools, especially from a technology perspective. Thus, a foothold is obtained in developing and improving educational models in vocational education during the post-pandemic with a two-sided approach, namely social and technical. This research uses a scientometrics approach, that uses data from the Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science (WOS) Core Collection and the Scopus Elsevier database. Data analysis was performed using VOSviewer (version 1.6.13) and Histcite. The results of the analysis are from 94 articles used as datasets. After filtering and adjusting the articles, it was found that innovation, development and technological change in vocational education as a response to COVID-19 are the media and methods in learning. The next research and study that becomes the main focus of vocational education from a socio-technical point of view is the social impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the great potential for increasing unemployment. As a result, the answers/solutions are obtained for these impacts. This article concludes with a discussion of the implications and limitations of the study.

This manuscript introduces a real-time fault detection technique based on statistical exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control charts for detecting power switch open circuit faults in inverter feeding induction motor drives. The proposed algorithm is able to detect simultaneously double and triple switches open circuit faults, besides single open circuit faults. The proposed technique is suitable for open/closed loop control systems and sensor/sensorless control configurations. Several Digital Signal Processor-based experimental works are conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the introduced detection technique concerning different operating conditions. The results provide evidence of the effectiveness and fast detection with no false alarms of the proposed technique.

This paper investigates the stability of the Francis hydro-turbine governing system with complex penstocks in the grid-connected mode. Firstly, a novel fractional-order nonlinear mathematical model of a Francis hydro-turbine governing system with complex penstocks is built from an engineering application perspective. This model is described by state-space equations and is composed of the Francis hydro-turbine model, the fractional-order complex penstocks model, the third-order generator model, and the hydraulic speed governing system model. Based on stability theory for a fractional-order nonlinear system, this study discovers a basic law of the bifurcation points of the above system with a change in the fractional-order a. Secondly, the stable region of the governing system is investigated in detail, and nonlinear dynamical behaviors of the system are identified and studied exhaustively via bifurcation diagrams, time waveforms, phase orbits, Poincare maps, power spectrums and spectrograms. Results of these numerical experiments provide a theoretical reference for further studies of the stability of hydropower stations.

The incidence of fall-related injuries in older adults is high. Given the significant and adverse outcomes that arise from injurious falls in older adults, it is of the utmost importance to identify older adults at greater risk for falls as early as possible. Given that balance dysfunction provides a significant risk factor for falls, an automated and objective identification of balance dysfunction in community dwelling older adults using wearable sensor data when walking may be beneficial. In this study, we examine the feasibility of using wearable sensors, when walking, to identify older adults who have trouble with balance at an early stage using state-of-the-art machine learning techniques. We recruited 21 community dwelling older women. The experimental paradigm consisted of two tasks: Normal walking with a self-selected comfortable speed on an instrumented treadmill and a test of reflexive postural response, using the motor control test (MCT). Based on the MCT, identification of older women with low or high balance function was performed. Using short duration accelerometer data from sensors placed on the knee and hip while walking, supervised machine learning was carried out to classify subjects with low and high balance function. Using a Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM) algorithm, we classified balance function in older adults using 60 seconds of accelerometer data with an average cross validation accuracy of 91.5% and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.97. Early diagnosis of balance dysfunction in community dwelling older adults through the use of user friendly and inexpensive wearable sensors may help in reducing future fall risk in older adults through earlier interventions and treatments, and thereby significantly reduce associated healthcare costs.
