As the popularity of Smart Televisions (TVs) and interactive Smart TV applications (apps) has recently grown, the usability of these apps has become an important quality characteristic. Previous studies examined Smart TV apps from a usability perspective. However, these methods are mainly manual, and the potential of automated model-based testing methods for usability testing purposes has not yet been fully explored. In this paper, we propose an approach to test the usability of Smart TV apps based on the automated generation of a Smart TV user interaction model from an existing app by a specialized automated crawler. By means of this model, defined user tasks in the Smart TV app can be evaluated automatically in terms of their feasibility and estimated user effort, which reflects the usability of the analyzed app. This analysis can be applied in the context of regular users and users with various specific needs. The findings from this model-based automated analysis approach can be used to optimize the user interface of a Smart TV app to increase its usability, accessibility, and quality. This book lies at the interface of machine learning a subfield of computer science that develops algorithms for challenging tasks such as shape or image recognition, where traditional algorithms fail and photonics the physical science of light, which underlies many of the optical communications technologies used in our information society. It provides a thorough introduction to reservoir computing and field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Recently, photonic implementations of reservoir computing (a machine learning algorithm based on artificial neural networks) have made a breakthrough in optical computing possible. In this book, the author pushes the performance of these systems significantly beyond what was achieved before. By interfacing a photonic reservoir computer with a high-speed electronic device (an FPGA), the author successfully interacts with the reservoir computer in real time, allowing him to considerably expand its capabilities and range of possible applications. Furthermore, the author draws on his expertise in machine learning and FPGA programming to make progress on a very different problem, namely the real-time image analysis of optical coherence tomography for atherosclerotic arteries.

The cortex of mammals has a distinct, low-level structure consisting of six horizontal layers that are vertically connected by local groups of about 80 to 100 neurons forming so-called minicolumns. A well-known and widely discussed hypothesis suggests that this regular structure may indicate that there could be a common computational principle that governs the diverse functions performed by the cortex. However, no generally accepted theory regarding such a common principle has been presented so far. In this position paper we provide a novel perspective on a possible function of cortical columns. Based on our previous efforts to model the behaviour of entorhinal grid cells we argue that a single cortical column can function as an independent, autoassociative memory cell (AMC) that utilizes a sparse distributed encoding. This paper describes a work in progress about software and hardware architecture to steer and control an ongoing fluid simulation in a context of a serious game *** propose to use the Lattice Boltzmann Method as the simulation approach considering that it can provide fully parallel algorithms to reach interactive time and because it's easier to change parameters while the simulation is in progress remaining physically relevant than more classical simulation *** describe which parameters we can modify and how we solve technical issues of interactive steering and we finally show an application of our interactive fluid simulation approach of water dam phenomena.

In this paper, we present a review of how the various aspects of any study using an eye tracker (such as the instrument, methodology, environment, participant, etc.) affect the quality of the recorded eye-tracking data and the obtained eye-movement and gaze measures. We take this review to represent the empirical foundation for reporting guidelines of any study involving an eye tracker. We compare this empirical foundation to five existing reporting guidelines and to a database of 207 published eye-tracking studies. We find that reporting guidelines vary substantially and do not match with actual reporting practices. We end by deriving a minimal, flexible reporting guideline based on empirical research (Section "An empirically based minimal reporting guideline").

Prototype-based classifiers in the presence of concept drift: A modelling framework

We present a modelling framework for the investigation of prototype-based classifiers in non-stationary environments. Specifically, we study Learning Vector Quantization (LVQ) systems trained from a stream of high-dimensional, clustered data. We consider standard winner-takes-all updates known as LVQ1. Statistical properties of the input data change on the time scale defined by the training process. We apply analytical methods borrowed from statistical physics which have been used earlier for the exact description of learning in stationary environments. The suggested framework facilitates the computation of learning curves in the presence of virtual and real concept drift. Here we focus on time-dependent class bias in the training data. First results demonstrate that, while basic LVQ algorithms are suitable for the training in non-stationary environments, weight decay as an explicit mechanism of forgetting does not improve the performance under the considered drift processes. This workshop summary on natural language processing (NLP) markers for psychosis and other psychiatric disorders presents some of the clinical and research issues that NLP markers might address and some of the activities needed to move in that direction. We propose that the optimal development of NLP markers would occur in the context of research efforts to map out the underlying mechanisms of psychosis and other disorders. In this workshop, we identified some of the challenges to be addressed in developing and implementing NLP markers-based Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs) in psychiatric practice, especially with respect to psychosis. Of note, a CDSS is meant to enhance decision-making by clinicians by providing additional relevant information primarily through software (although CDSSs are not without risks). In psychiatry, a field that relies on subjective clinical ratings that condense rich temporal behavioral information, the inclusion of computational quantitative NLP markers can plausibly lead to operationalized decision models in place of idiosyncratic ones, although ethical issues must always be paramount.
