We apply a range of data mining techniques to analyze voting patterns in the United Nations. We begin with non-linear dimensionality reduction, showing that diffusion geometry reveals an historically relevant organization of countries based on their UN voting patterns. Key historical events can be ``read out'' from these embeddings, such as de Gaulle's influence on France and the breakup of the Soviet Union. These events are not apparent in other (e.g., PCA) embeddings. We then switch to an organization of resolutions, revealing dominant themes during different political epochs. Formally themes are introduced as summaries (eigenfunctions) within a modified hierarchical clustering algorithm.

The Studio Model is one of the more popular approaches to achieve student centered learning. A studio course integrates theory with demonstrations and underscores the importance of collaborative and active learning on the part of students. While the student plays a more active role and participates in a number of face-to-face and computer assisted learning activities, the instructor assumes the role of facilitator of learning rather than a presenter of knowledge. Several studies have been carried out to establish the effectiveness of the studio approach. In this paper, we review the current international practices of studio classroom as means of achieving student centered learning, and share our initial experience of partially applying Technology Enhanced Active Learning (TEAL) approach to an undergraduate software engineering course. We also present some recommendations to design and implement studio courses at universities who plan to adopt studio courses as part of blended learning approaches.

DC faults may cause severe disruptions in continuity of service to vital loads in a shipboard integrated power system, hence detection, isolation, and protection against such faults must be incorporated in both medium-voltage DC (MVDC) and low-voltage DC (LVDC) systems. Here we consider the effectiveness of existing z-source breakers and propose several new designs more appropriate for fault detection in MVDC and LVDC systems. In particular, we perform an optimization study that aims to minimize dissipation and weight and we identify the key parameters for use in MVDC and LVDC systems. Preliminary verification and validation studies are also included. © 2013 IEEE.

Mobile users face a tradeoff between cost, through-put, and delay in making their offloading decisions. To navigate this tradeoff, we propose AMUSE (Adaptive bandwidth Management through USer-Empowerment), a practical, cost-aware WiFi offloading system that takes into account a user's throughput-delay tradeoffs and cellular budget constraint. Based on predicted future usage and WiFi availability, AMUSE decides which applications to offload to what times of the day. To practically enforce the assigned rate of each TCP application, we introduce a receiver-side TCP bandwidth control algorithm that adjusts the rate by controlling the TCP advertisement window from the user side. We implement AMUSE on Windows 7 tablets and evaluate its effectiveness with 3G and WiFi usage data obtained from a trial with 25 mobile users. Our results show that AMUSE improves user utility.

The firefly algorithm (FA) is a new population-based metaheuristic bioinspired on the behavior of the flashing characteristics of fireflies. As a population-based algorithm, the FA suffers from large execution times specifically for embedded optimization problems with computational limitations. For reducing execution times we propose a hardware parallel architecture of the FA algorithm that facilitates the implementation in Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). In addition, this work proposes the application of the opposition-based learning (OBL) approach to the FA algorithm. The respective hardware implementation (HPOFA) was mapped into a Virtex5 FPGA device and numerical experiments using four well-known benchmark problems demonstrate that the opposition-based approach allows the FA algorithm to improve its functionality, preserving the swarm diversity and avoiding the premature convergence problem. Synthesis results point out that the HPOFA architecture is effectively mapped in hardware and is suitable for embedded applications.

Shape from shading is a classical inverse problem in computer vision. We introduce a novel mathematical formulation for calculating local surface shape based on covariant derivatives, rather than the customary integral minimization or P.D.E approaches. Motivated by neurobiology, we introduce the shading flow field (the tangent map to the image isophotes) between the image and the surface levels. Just as in the perceptual organization of texture, we use the parallel transport of our shading flow field to move the isophote field at different points on the unknown surface to a single point, amassing restrictions on our surface curvatures. Under simplifying assumptions we solve exactly for the light source/surface pairs needed for a local image patch to have a given shading flow. The magnitude of the brightness gradient then restricts this family to a single light source and surface estimate pair, up to the concave/convex ambiguity and an additional elliptical/saddle ambiguity. Example calculations illustrate our approach. © 2012 IEEE.

Recent years have seen an explosion in the number of cross site scripting (XSS) incidents effecting Web sites and Web applications. As such, an intrusion detection system (IDS) capable of detecting potential cross site scripting attacks is demonstrated. The IDS involves the capturing of potential client side executable content on a Web page and the hashing of that content. At a future point in time, the Web page is reprocessed for client side executable content and the content rehashed, with any differences in the hash values indicative of a potential XSS attack. It is believed that the described IDS technique would be particularly useful for Web forums and other user content driven site, since the IDS only considers content recognized as potentially executable and not normal text content, such as that which would be typically enclosed in paragraph or heading tags. © 2012 IEEE.
