Impact response of contact lenses is measured using the Levitation Mass Method (LMM). In the LMM, a small mass collides with contact lenses and the impact force is measured with high accuracy as the inertial force of the moving part. A pneumatic linear bearing is used to achieve linear motion with sufficiently small friction acting on the moving part. Hysteresis loop and consumed energy as mechanical characteristics of contact lenses are also calculated.. © (2015) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

DC faults may cause severe disruptions in continuity of service to vital loads in a shipboard integrated power system, hence detection, isolation, and protection against such faults must be incorporated in both medium-voltage DC (MVDC) and low-voltage DC (LVDC) systems. Here we consider the effectiveness of existing z-source breakers and propose several new designs more appropriate for fault detection in MVDC and LVDC systems. In particular, we perform an optimization study that aims to minimize dissipation and weight and we identify the key parameters for use in MVDC and LVDC systems. Preliminary verification and validation studies are also included.

We prove that every graph has a spectral sparsifier with a number of edges linear in its number of vertices. As linear-sized spectral sparsifiers of complete graphs are expanders, our sparsifiers of arbitrary graphs can be viewed as generalizations of expander graphs. In particular, we prove that for every d > 1 and every undirected, weighted graph G = (V, E,w) on n vertices, there exists a weighted graph H = (V, F, w˜) with at most d(n - 1)] edges such that for every x ∈ v, xT LGx ≤ xT LHx ≤ (d+1+2√d/d+1+2√d)· x T Lgx, where LG and LH are the Laplacian matrices of G and H, respectively. Thus, H approximates G spectrally at least as well as a Ramanujan expander with dn/2 edges approximates the complete graph. Previous studies concerned with mobile financial services for the poor have been narrowly conceived, mainly depending on secondary data and focusing on technical design issues without having fully understood individuals' complex relationships and money practices. In order to contribute to this knowledge gap and inform mobile money system design, an exploratory case study investigated social relationships and social payment practices among rural individuals in Ethiopia. Key findings regarding their money exchange practices include: (1) secrecy and disclosure of money exchange practices (2) acceptance and or rejection of money gift for some reasons, (3) personalize money giving and accepting practices, and finally (4) separating and labeling of money based on its purpose and source. A qualitative exploratory research approach with key informant focus group discussions served as the primary means of information gathering. Copyright © 2012 ACM.

Shape from shading is a classical inverse problem in computer vision. We introduce a novel mathematical formulation for calculating local surface shape based on covariant derivatives, rather than the customary integral minimization or P.D.E approaches. Motivated by neurobiology, we introduce the shading flow field (the tangent map to the image isophotes) between the image and the surface levels. Just as in the perceptual organization of texture, we use the parallel transport of our shading flow field to move the isophote field at different points on the unknown surface to a single point, amassing restrictions on our surface curvatures. Under simplifying assumptions we solve exactly for the light source/surface pairs needed for a local image patch to have a given shading flow. The magnitude of the brightness gradient then restricts this family to a single light source and surface estimate pair, up to the concave/convex ambiguity and an additional elliptical/saddle ambiguity. Example calculations illustrate our approach.

The objective of this research is to minimize the electricity consumed by individual web site using cohesion technique. The underlying principle lies in rearrangement of web-based HTML code in compliance with W3C and cohesion principles. As such, this research exemplifies good programming discipline in system design which yields considerable energy saving. The result suggests a simple approach for energy consumption environmental green computing system that depends on how efficient one manages the supporting processing environment.

Recent years have seen an explosion in the number of cross site scripting (XSS) incidents effecting Web sites and Web applications. As such, an intrusion detection system (IDS) capable of detecting potential cross site scripting attacks is demonstrated. The IDS involves the capturing of potential client side executable content on a Web page and the hashing of that content. At a future point in time, the Web page is reprocessed for client side executable content and the content rehashed, with any differences in the hash values indicative of a potential XSS attack. It is believed that the described IDS technique would be particularly useful for Web forums and other user content driven site, since the IDS only considers content recognized as potentially executable and not normal text content, such as that which would be typically enclosed in paragraph or heading tags.

Artificial bee colony (ABC) is an optimization algorithm inspired on the intelligent behavior of honey bee swarms. It is suitable to be applied when mathematical techniques are impractical or provide suboptimal solutions. As a population-based algorithm, the ABC suffers on large execution times specifically for embedded optimization problems with computational limitations. For that we propose a hardware parallel architecture of the opposition-based ABC algorithm (HPOABC) that facilitates the implementation in Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Numerical simulations using four well-known benchmark problems demonstrate that the opposition-based approach allows the algorithm to improve its functionality, preserving the swarm diversity. Additionally, synthesis results point outs that the HPOABC architecture is effectively mapped in hardware and is suitable for embedded applications. © 2012 IEEE.

We consider the problem of minimizing ∫ 0 ℓ √(ξ 2 +K 2 (s)ds) for a planar curve having fixed initial and final positions and directions. The total length ℓ is free. Here s is the variable of arclength parametrization, K(s) is the curvature of the curve and ξ >; 0 a parameter. This problem comes from a model of geometry of vision due to Petitot, Citti and Sarti. We study existence of local and global minimizers for this problem. We prove that if for a certain choice of boundary conditions there is no global minimizer, then there is neither a local minimizer nor a stationary curve (geodesic). Our main tool is the construction of the optimal synthesis for the Reed and Shepp car with quadratic cost.
