A pair of initial studies using an evolutionary approach to curricular reform that capitalize on the strength of both the top-down and bottom-up model, and was built on the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) reform literature are performed. This approach develop a pairwise linkage among strategic courses in the engineering curricula to promote curricular integration. The results of trial produced higher course grades in both course grades in both courses, though the change was most significant for the mechanical engineering course. Full evaluation of the project cannot be obtained until the study is continued to include statics students who also participated when they were enrolled in the computerscience course.

It is known that one of the most disastrous forms of collective human behavior is the kind of crowd stampede induced by panic. This situation often leads to fatalities as people are crushed or trampled. This problem has been well researched from a socio-psychological point of view. In this paper we attempt to study and analyze the crowd behavior by using an ant colony optimization (ACO) based computational framework. With the increase in adoption of remote work groups and teams working in non-collocated environments, several opportunities for interaction have been lost. Contact with colleagues and discovery of opportunities, previously easy due to physical proximity, is made harder with distance. In this paper, we describe an agent-based framework to assist users in finding opportunities for interaction that may have been overlooked.

This paper presents MODENA, an architecture for scientific models management using Computational Grid platform. This architecture is comprised of two systems: ModManager and ModRunner. ModManager deals with knowledge management about scientific models, acting as a scientific models library allowing for cataloguing, searching, reutilization and generation of new models. To achieve this, a metamodel is proposed to classify models, in order to support the organization, searching and retrieving of models. ModRunner manages the execution of models in a Grid environment allowing for model composition to generate a scientific Grid Workflow to be executed by distributed services offered by Grid Services. An initial prototype of ModManager is presented.

We propose a new algorithm for constructing finite-element meshes suitable for spacetime discontinuous Galerkin solutions of linear hyperbolic PDEs. Given a triangular mesh of some planar domain Ω and a target time value T, our method constructs a tetrahedral mesh of the spacetime domain Ω × [0, T] in constant running time per tetrahedron in 3 using an advancing front method. Elements are added to the evolving mesh in small patches by moving a vertex of the front forward in time. Spacetime discontinuous Galerkin methods allow the numerical solution within each patch to be computed as soon as the patch is created. Our algorithm employs new mechanisms for adaptively coarsening and refining the front in response to a posteriori error estimates returned by the numerical code. A change in the front induces a corresponding refinement or coarsening of future elements in the spacetime mesh. Our algorithm adapts the duration of each element to the local quality, feature size, and degree of refinement of the underlying space mesh. We directly exploit the ability of discontinuous Galerkin methods to accommodate discontinuities in the solution fields across element boundaries.
