We consider a set of computers with precedence constraints (an ordered set) in which stored information can be passed, serially or in parallel, from one computer to any other which is an immediate successor. When is it possible to organize information transmission so that each computer receives all information from its predecessors, without duplication?

The author locates poles for Eisenstein series on algebraic groups SL(n)(DELTA), where n is-an-element-of N and DELTA is an arbitrary finite dimensional division algebra over a number field. An explicit family of nonholomorphic functions, which include series of arbitrary level, is characterized. Each series E(z, s) is induced from a character on a maximal parabolic. For each E(z, s) in the family, there is an explicit product LAMBDA(s) of GAMMA-functions, L-functions and a polynomial term such that LAMBDA(s)E(z, s) has only simple poles in the s variable.

Reports on the development of a scalable multiple-instruction multiple-data (MIMD) concurrent architecture which is intended to serve as an effective alternative for solving stochastic differential and optimization systems. This architecture has in turn motivated the application of group theory and invariance analysis to acquire further insights in understanding the original problem. The speed-up ratios attained by this architecture can realistically justify its potential deployment in certain real-time applications. A case study related to real-time stochastic control and optimization serve to illustrate this possibility.< >

He joined Ingalls in 1958 and has held various positions in the Engineering Division and participated in the design of numerous merchant ships drill rigs submarines and surface combatants and auxiliary support ships. Mr. Lindgren is a 1958 graduate of the University of Southwest Louisiana. His degree is in mechanical engineering and he is also a licensed professional engineer. William A. Solitario:is the director of advanced technology at Ingalls Shipbuilding Inc. in Pascagoula Miss. He received his B.S. degree in chemical engineering from the City University of New York and has 28 years experience in marine engineering and design. His current responsibilities include the direction of Ingalls' IRAD programs and several Navy-funded R&D programs to improve ship's performance and reduce ship's operating costs. He is a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and past chairman of the Gulf Section East Area. Arnold P. Moore:is the director design engineering at Ingalls Shipbuilding where he is responsible for all new construction design and engineering activities. Prior to promotion to his current position Mr. Moore served as chief naval architect at Ingalls. He has 24 years experience in ship design construction and repair. Mr. Moore holds the professional degree of ocean engineer as well as a master's degree in naval architecture and marine engineering from MIT. He also earned a bachelor's degree in naval science from the U.S. Naval Academy and is a registered professional engineer. Mr. Moore served as an engineering duty officer in the U.S. Navy and is currently a captain in the Naval Reserve. He is a past chairman of the Gulf Section of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers and Sigma Xi. Michel A. The SA'AR-5 Corvette program is the first major warship construction to be entirely accomplished using a 3-dimensional, interference checked computer based design. This paper discusses the organization and approach used to create the design models which form the basis for interference checking as well as the source of extracted production data. The design or product model is the nucleus of the computer data base that defines the configuration of the entire ship. The data base includes geometry, weight, and material, as well as production control data. The ability of the computer to link such diverse information is the key to maintaining configuration control during the course of the design and construction. The ease with which formatted manufacturing data (both N.C. fabrication and installation) can be extracted enables the preparation of detailed packages containing the desired geometry as well as the associated material and sequencing data, thus assuring the producibility of the design. The SA'AR-5 design is CAD/CAM's state of the art in U.S. shipbuilding.

All previously known algorithms for solving the multicommodity flow problem with capacities are based on linear programming. The best of these algorithms [14] uses a fast matrix multiplication algorithm and takes O(k25n2m5 log(nDU)) time to find an approximate solution, where κ is the number of commodities, n and m denote the number of nodes and edges in the network, D is the largest demand, and U is the largest edge capacity. Substantially more time is needed to find an exact solution. As a consequence, even multicommodit y flow problems with jnst a few commodities are believed to be much harder than single-commodity maximum-flow or minimum-cost flow problems. In thk paper, we describe the first polynomial-Time combinatorial algorithms for approximately solving the multicommodity flow problem. The running time of our randomized algorithm is (up to ,log factors) the same as the time needed to solve κ single-commodity flow problems, thus giving the surprising result that approximately computing a κ-commodity maximum-flow is not much harder than computing about κ single-commodity maximum-flows in isolation. In fact, we prove that a (simple) κ-commodity flow problem can be approximately solved by approximately solving O(κ log2 n) single-commodity minimum-cost flow problems. Our κ-commodity algorithm runs in O(knm log4 n) time with high probability. We also describe a deterministic algorithm that uses an O(κ)-factor more time. Given any multicommodit y flow problem as input, both rdgorithms are guaranteed to provide a feasible solution to a modified fIOW problem in which all capacities are increased by a (1 + c)-factor, or to provide a proof that there is no feasible solution to the original problem. We also describe faster approximation algorithms for multicommodity flow problems with a special structure, such as those that arise in the 'sparsest cutn problems studied in [8, 10, 9], and the uniform concurrent flow problems studied in [13, 9] if κ ≥ √m. © 1991 ACM.

ROLE OF SIMULATION IN RAPID PROTOTYPING FOR CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

作者： KING, JF BARTON, DE J. Fred King:is the manager of the Advanced Technology Department for Unisys in Reston Virginia. He earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Houston in 1977. He has been principal investigator of research projects in knowledge engineering pattern recognition and heuristic problem-solving. Efforts include the development of a multi-temporal multispectral classifier for identifying graincrops using LANDSAT satellite imagery data for NASA. Also as a member of the research team for a NCI study with Baylor College of Medicine and NASA he helped develop techniques for detection of carcinoma using multispectral microphotometer scans of lung tissue. He established and became technical director of the AI Laboratory for Ford Aerospace where he developed expert scheduling modeling and knowledge acquisition systems for NASA. Since joining Unisys in 1985 he has led the development of object-oriented programming environments blackboard architectures data fusion techniques using neural networks and intelligent data base systems. Douglas E. Barton:is manager of Logistics Information Systems for Unisys in Reston Virginia. He earned his B.A. degree in computer science from the College of William and Mary in 1978 and did postgraduate work in London as a Drapers Company scholar. Since joining Unisys in 1981 his work has concentrated on program management and software engineering of large scale data base management systems and design and implementation of knowledge-based systems in planning and logistics. As chairman of the Logistics Data Subcommittee of the National Security Industrial Association (NSIA) he led an industry initiative which examined concepts in knowledge-based systems in military logistics. His responsibilities also include evaluation development and tailoring of software engineering standards and procedures for data base and knowledge-based systems. He is currently program manager of the Navigation Information Management System which provides support to the Fleet Ballistic Missile Progr

A valuable technique during concept development is rapid prototyping of software for key design components. This approach is particularly useful when the optimum design approach is not readily apparent or several known alternatives need to be rapidly evaluated. A problem inherent in rapid prototyping is the lack of a "target system" with which to interface. Some alternatives are to develop test driver libraries, integrate the prototype with an existing working simulator, or build one for the specific problem. This paper presents a unique approach to concept development using rapid prototyping for concept development and scenario-based simulation for concept verification. The rapid prototyping environment, derived from artificial intelligence technology, is based on a blackboard architecture. The rapid prototype simulation capability is provided through an object-oriented modeling environment. It is shown how both simulation and blackboard technologies are used collectively to rapidly gain insight into a tenacious problem. A specific example will be discussed where this approach was used to evolve the logic of a mission controller for an autonomous underwater vehicle.

A three‐dimensional computational simulator of nonplanar substrates coated with positive photoresists is presented. The model includes four major steps: projection printing, exposure, post‐exposure baking (PEB), and dissolution. Projection printing is based on Hopkins’ classical work. The exposure model employs the full nonlinear wave equation coupled with the photoactive compound (PAC) bleaching rate equation. These equations are solved using a spectral element iterative scheme. The PEB is treated as a material diffusion equation employing ideas introduced by Mack and the dissolution algorithm is our LEAD (least action dissolution) algorithm modified for nonplanar substrates. Several realistic examples are presented displaying final profiles at various dissolution times.

This paper presents results concerning the use of simulation in the analysis of finite games and the development of strategies for their solution. programs were developed in the Scheme programming language [Rees and Clinger 1986] to play large numbers of games pitting various strategies against each other. The games discussed here range from the well-known Tic-tac-toe, through versions of ConnectThree for various sized boards, to the commercial ConnectFour game. The ConnectThree game is based on ConnectFour, but was developed as a simplification amenable to play within reasonable time by perfect strategies that look ahead to the end of the game. The game is played on a vertical array with players alternately dropping disks of their color into the array. The first player to create a row, column or diagonal of three disks of their own color wins. The ConnectFour game is similar, but requires completion of a line of four disks of one's own color to win. Conducting tournaments involving optimal strategies enabled us to predict for which board sizes the ConnectThree game is a first-player win and for which it is a draw. Armed with the results from our simulation, we have been able to prove these predictions in almost all cases. Research is continuing on the ConnectFour game in an effort to determine if and when it is a forced draw or whether the first or second player has the advantage. For this game, it is not computationally feasible to play perfect strategies that look ahead right to the end of the game. In order to develop even good strategies, it is necessary to find good heuristics for evaluating non terminal board positions. At this stage of our investigations, the role of simulation is essentially to evaluate various such heuristics by testing them as predictors of the outcome of games.
