Staff scheduling is a key component of supporting and increasing competitiveness for many service enterprises. This is of especially urgent concern for organizations that provide service on a twenty-four hour basis and often encounter significant fluctuations of demand. By scheduling personnel, the employers have also to strictly follow local laws, industrial regulations, and workload agreements that may considerably affect the final schedule. Staff preferences have also to be taken into account when planning work schedules, since it may reduce turnover and increase productivity. In this paper we consider a staff scheduling problem that arise in the industrial fields where the demand in staff is highly dynamic and varies within time intervals throughout a day. The goal is to assign each employee with a shift for each day of a planning horizon so as to minimize the sum of unsatisfied demand over all time intervals subject to hard workplace constraints. Note that each employee may have his/her day-specific set of pre-defined shifts and a set of work-rule constraints. We formulate the scheduling problem as a mixed-integer program. We develop several fast two-stage heuristic algorithms that includes a constructive step to find an initial solution followed by fast local search procedures. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches on a number of real-world huge-scale scheduling problems involving thousands of employees. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

The paper deals with techniques of constructing optimal control problems and testing optimization software for controlled dynamical systems. A test collection of nonconvex optimal control problems has been developed and used for studying the properties of optimization software. The description of the collection problems is made using the generated template, which includes the formulation of the problem statement, characteristics of the computational process and the obtained results, containing graphical visualizations of the reachable set and optimal controls with corresponding trajectories. Several testing techniques based on presented collection are proposed.

On global optimality conditions for D.C. Minimization problems with D.C. Constraints

The paper addresses the nonconvex nonsmooth optimization problem with the cost function, and equality and inequality constraints given by d.c. functions, i.e. represented as a difference of convex functions. The original problem is reduced to a problem without constraints with the help of the exact penalization theory. After that, the penalized problem is represented as a d.c. minimization problem without constraints, for which the new mathematical tools under the form of global optimality conditions (GOCs) are developed. The GOCs reduce the nonconvex problem in question to a family of convex (linearized with respect to the basic nonconvexities) problems. In addition, the GOCs are related to some nonsmooth form of the KKT-theorem for the original problem. Besides, the GOCs possess the constructive (algorithmic) property, which, when the GOCs are broken down, implies the producing of a feasible point that is better (in the original problem) than the one in question. The effectiveness of the GOCs is demonstrated by examples. © 2021 Journal of Applied and Numerical Optimization.

The problem of software modeling having various models as sources and its transformation based on logical inference is considered. Source models are converted into graphs of RDF and then processed with knowledge based system organized in a network of objects. Various notation can be used to represent models, such as UML, SysML, CMMN, BPMN2.0, as well as RDF graphs and analyzed source code, having implemented a corresponding converter. The objects are represented in the LogTalk programming language. Objects query graphs and other objects implementing a scenario of a software system synthesis within Model Driven Architecture paradigm. Usage of such kind of transformation approach allows us to develop software system carcasses on the level of abstract models, involve various sources of model data in the transformation, define and structuring conversion knowledge as objects. An example of a dataflow environment synthesis encapsulating Mothur library for new generation sequencing is presented.

Personnel scheduling is an active research field motivated by not only economic considerations but also the understanding of importance of improving working conditions and fairness in assigning employees to tasks. A large number of daily tasks and an expanding staff require effective automation of the task allocation process. In the problem under consideration, given sets of tasks and staff, it is required to assign the certain number of employees to each task, taking into account their skills. The goal is to minimize penalties induced by conflicting assignments as well as by uneven workload of the staff. To solve the problem, a two-phase heuristic consisting of a greedy heuristic followed by a randomize tabu search has been developed. Computational experiments shows that the proposed approach allows us to find optimal or near-optimal solutions on instances corresponding to real-life problems. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The paper describes the main principles of visualization software development, as well as implemented by this software approach, which is based on the use of ontologies to describe both the rendered domain, and the rules of its 3Ddisplaying. This approach allows the user to avoid programming the 3Dscene and describe it in terms of the research area. The paper set out a formal model of a software tool, its architecture, basic modules and ontology structure. The process of visual scene design and creation is described, including the steps of ontology modelling, visual objects creation, formation of scene describing rules, code generation, visualization, organization of data exchange between visualization software and data source. WebGLbased library was chosen as primary means for 3D graphics rendering, which allows to create visual scenes in the user's web browser. Examples of generated scenes and the question of its performance are also discussed in the article.

This paper presents a grid-enabled system for solving large-scale optimization problems. The system has been developed using Globus and MPICH-G2 grid technologies, and consists of two BCP solvers and of an interface portal. After a brief introduction to Branch, Cut and Price optimization algorithms, the system architecture, the solvers and the portal user interface are described. The high-performance computing systems include a large number of hardware and software components that can cause failures. Nowadays, the well-known approaches to monitoring and ensuring the fault tolerance of the high-performance computing systems do not allow to fully implement its integrated solution. The aim of this paper is to develop methods and tools for identifying abnormal situations during large-scale computational experiments in high-performance computing environments, localizing these malfunctions, automatically troubleshooting if this is possible, and automatically reconfiguring the computing environment otherwise. The proposed approach is based on the idea of integrating monitoring systems, used in different nodes of the environment, into a unified meta-monitoring system. The use of the proposed approach minimizes the time to perform diagnostics and troubleshooting through the use of parallel operations. It also improves the resiliency of the computing environment processes by preventive measures to diagnose and troubleshoot of failures. These advantages lead to increasing the reliability and efficiency of the environment functioning. The novelty of the proposed approach is underlined by the following elements: mechanisms of the decentralized collection, storage, and processing of monitoring data;a new technique of decision-making in reconfiguring the environment;the supporting the provision of fault tolerance and reliability not only for software and hardware, but also for environment management systems. We address a variation of the multi-skill resource-constrained project scheduling problem motivated by the need to find a quality schedule for the construction activities related to rolling-out a large network of mobile stations. The network roll-out (NRO) is a complex industrial project aimed at deploying a set of mobile stations in certain region. This requires attracting a set of contractors, who can provide worker teams that have skills to execute specific project activities depending on their type. The problem also involves some additional specific industrial requirements related to how the contractors’ workload should be distributed during the project duration (workload stability constraints). Other important industrial constraints are the precedence redundancy constraints on the project activities. We formulate this problem as a mixed-integer linear program that can be viewed as a disaggregated time-indexed integer programming formulation with pulse variables. To find quality feasible solutions of the problem, we propose a two-phase MIP heuristic consisting of (i) a relax-and-fix heuristic followed by (ii) a large neighborhood search. This paper is concerned with an optimal impulsive control problem under intermediate state constraints. The control system of this problem is bilinear with respect to states of bounded variation and impulsive controls given by vector Borel measures. We propose necessary and sufficient optimality conditions based on special functions of the Lyapunov type. These functions possess the property of strong and weak monotonicity with respect to the impulsive control system.
