Cable networks are essential in modern systems, but they can develop defects due to environmental factors or wear, leading to signal degradation or reduced performance. These defects cause signal reflections in transmission lines due to impedance mismatches, either within the cables or between the cables and their port loads. Such reflections can result from junctions, soft faults (partial impedance changes), or hard faults, i.e., open or short circuits. Diagnosing these faults, especially using Time-Domain Reflectometry (TDR), requires accurately modeling how impedance mismatches affect signal reflections. This paper presents a model that takes a comprehensive approach to addressing various sources of impedance mismatches. It covers junctions, soft and hard faults, and mismatches between cables and connected devices. The model's thoroughness is evident in its ability to handle complex scenarios such as heterogeneous junctions, soft faults, multi-path reflections, input port reflections, and multi-load reflections. Additionally, it evaluates signal reflection measurability based on the components of the propagation path, further enhancing its robustness. The model's accuracy is validated through simulations using the distributed RLCG cable model, comparing predicted reflection values with simulated signals. The results show strong agreement, confirming the model's effectiveness in diagnosing faults in complex cable networks. This should instill confidence in the model's practical application, as it accurately correlates signal reflections with specific defects, paving the way for efficient fault diagnosis. © 2024 IEEE.

Compliant mechanisms are becoming increasingly important, especially in force measurement and weighing technology, due to their zero backlash, wear resistance, and zero friction. Their deformation under external forces can be analyzed well with analytical calculations and FEM simulations. Analytically, only mechanisms with symmetrical and longitudinally symmetrical hinges are described. This paper presents a method that allows transversally symmetric hinges to be described analytically. The model must be computed numerically due to the built neutral fiber and the nonlinearities in the used calculation method. The developed method is then compared with FEM calculations in a parameter study and considered to be validated. Finally, outlooks are formulated on how the created method can for instance be used to develop load cells for later calculations. Moreover, it is shown to what extent it is possible to implement this method for general calculations of compliant mechanisms. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Eddy current displacement sensors (ECDS) are essential for accurate position measurement in heavy industries. For instance, in steel plants, position sensor systems often need to measure large displacements and withstand high temperatures, dirt, and dust exposure. Various protective measures, such as metal shields or chain curtains, create a restricted environment for such sensors and cause interference. Shielding techniques must be used to reduce this interference. However, due to spatial restrictions, established shielding techniques cannot always be applied. This study presents a design approach for a single-coil ECDS that reduces the effects of metal objects on the measurement signal by using a single backside shield. The accuracy of the proposed measurement system is improved by integrating shielding measures and selecting a suitable measurement frequency. This improvement is demonstrated through the lab measurements. The measures provide a basis for reliable position measurement with ECDS in harsh environments.

The calculation of signal derivatives is a sensitive operation in digital signal processing. This is due to the high pass nature of the derivative operation and the subsequent noise amplification. Bandlimited differentiator designs based on FIR approximations are therefore commonly used. Another prominent technique is Savitzky-Golay-filtering to design FIR differentiators. However, all of these techniques introduce a temporal shift by the (constant) group delay of the odd FIR filters. In this work we present a FIR differentiator design for band-pass signals based on a Wiener filter approach. Therefore, the differentiation task is treated as a signal estimation problem, which leads to a delay free FIR differentiator. The design specifications for the filter, e.g. the bandwidth, are formulated in the frequency range. The properties and performance of the approach are presented by means of comparative simulation studies.

In the burgeoning field of sensing, Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) are essential tools for precise, high-speed detection of biological markers and particles. The performance of these biosensors is intricately linked to the losses of PICs, which is largely determined by the configuration of their core and cladding layers. Recognizing this, the present study ventures into the optimization of these layers in Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) PICs, employing an innovative approach using Classification and Regression Trees (CART). The study identifies propagation and bend losses, two critical factors affecting PIC performance, as response variables. In contrast, the physical characteristics of the core and cladding layers are considered as input variables. To ensure the robustness and completeness of the study, an appropriate Design of Experiments (DOE) is implemented, meticulously exploring possible combinations of layer configurations. Following the DOE, the CART algorithm is then applied to this design space, whereas the losses act as response variables. The algorithm functions by partitioning the design space into regions associated with specific layer configurations and iteratively refines these partitions based on their corresponding impact on propagation and bend losses. The end results of this process is the statistical information about the layer stacks which come with significantly low propagation and bend losses, thereby enhancing PIC performance. This improvement in performance directly translates to heightened sensitivity and specificity in biosensors. Further, the application of the CART methodology has demonstrated its potential to streamline the PIC design process, enhancing its robustness, an aspect critical for practical implementation in fabrication environments. © 2023 SPIE.

Integrated photonic sensors are promising devices to detect the presence of biological and chemical substances. Especially, silicon photonics features scalable, compact, and robust applications in, inter alia, the medical, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries for decentralized, real-time sensing. In an effort to continuously lower the limit of detection and build ultra precise devices, their sensitivity is steadily increased. The optical loss, however, is often neglected. This reduces the available intensity in the transmission spectrum and, thus, restricts the achievable limit of detection. We optimize a bimodal waveguide interferometer for environmental sensing based on a silicon nitride platform. Thereby, we combine considerations regarding the sensitivity, optical loss, and coupling into a figure of merit to design the single-mode and the bimodal platforms. To that end, we utilize a recently developed model of surface-roughness-induced scattering to include the estimated propagation loss in the design process. This model uses the simulated modes and measured autocovariance in the surface roughness for an estimation of the propagation loss in the real platform. We observe that considering the optical loss favors platforms of medium height for a quasi-transverse-electric polarization. In consequence, we demonstrate drastic changes in the design choices compared to pure sensitivity-focused waveguide platforms. Thus, we show that a holistic design process is essential to fully utilize the potential of integrated photonic devices. Ultimately, we are convinced that this methodology will be beneficial in making integrated photonic sensors more sensitive. © 2023 SPIE.

This study investigates symmetrical Lamb wave behavior across varying state-of-charge levels in lithium-ion batteries. Utilizing piezoelectric transducers, the research focuses on inducing and detecting Lamb waves in lithium-ion batteries. The outcomes uncover correlations between Lamb wave characteristics and state-of-charge variations, revealing insights into the potential of Lamb waves as indicators of internal changes in battery structures. Furthermore, the influence of chemomechanical alterations within battery structures on Lamb wave properties is explored. The insights gained offer valuable implications for understanding battery performance dynamics and internal transformations. © 2023 IEEE.

Hand gesture recognition has a wide range of applications in robotics, game control, and in communication with the deaf and people with trouble hearing. Recognition of American sign language (ASL) hand gestures has been extensively studied in the literature. Multiple data sources and different features extracted from these data were used to classify ASL gestures. In this study, we examined the features used in previous research to determine the minimum number of features that can give an accurate classification of ASL hand gestures. Force myography (FMG) signals captured for ASL gestures of digits 0-9 were used in this analysis of the selected features. Extracted features from the raw FMG signals were applied to K-nearest neighbors (KNN) and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) to evaluate their efficiency in identifying the corresponding hand gesture. Results show that using only the mean value as input to classification algorithms yields the highest classification accuracy. The classification accuracy was 90% and 96.9% for KNN and ELM, respectively. © 2023 IEEE.

Integrated photonic biosensors constitute an important technology for the growing point-of-care paradigm. Due to their high sensitivity and ample design freedom, interferometric sensors are an attractive embodiment for this application. In an effort to continuously lower the limit of detection and build ultra-precise devices, the sensitivity is steadily increased. Thereby, the limiting factors are optical loss, noise, and cross-sensitivities to external perturbations. We present a novel design method for integrated interferometers to inherently compensate for the cross-sensitivity to bulk perturbations in the matrix’s refractive index. We exploit that the analyte induces a localized effect when binding to the bioreceptors. By using different guided modes with engineered phase signals in the interferometer, we distinguish between analyte binding and bulk perturbations. To first order, their optical path may be designed such that the relative change due to bulk perturbations vanishes while sensitivity to the analyte is retained. We demonstrate this methodology via simulations of a Mach-Zehnder-interferometer for an immunosensor based on a silicon nitride platform. We show that this design may be easily incorporated in most conventional layouts, due to an excess of degrees of freedom, and could further be applied in fiber-based devices. In this manner, interferometers utilizing guided modes could compensate cross-talk for perturbations in the matrix’s temperature, pH, or general chemical composition. We believe that eliminating these limiting external impacts could help integrated photonic biosensors to overcome current issues with reliability and robustness. © 2023 SPIE.
