In this study several demand controlled ventilation (DCV) strategies are compared with regard to indoor air quality, thermal comfort, and heating energy demand. In order to appropriately model the office room equipped with a PID controlled floor heating system and 4 commonly used bottom-hinged tilted windows located in our low-energy research house (SmartHOME), the thermal time constants and air exchange rates including the infiltration rate and natural ventilation rate were measured. Simulations were then performed for 2 typical winter days in Munich in the accordingly modeled office room with 2 adults working from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The DCV strategies ensure that the CO 2 concentration of the indoor air stays within the preset range. The Pettenkofer limit of 1000 ppm is a hygienically approved limit value for long-term occupied spaces. The results show that the combination of appropriate DCV and floor heating control strategies can greatly reduce the heating energy consumption and at the same time guarantees high indoor air quality and low room temperature variations. It can decrease the total heating energy demand of the office room during working hours by approximately 27% and save 4.4 kWh per typical winter day compared with the usually recommended “brief and intensive airing” method. Moreover, based on our measurements we performed CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations in order to determine the temporally resolved 3D distributions of the indoor CO 2 concentration. These results help determine the best location in the room for a single sensor inside the room to representatively measure the CO 2 concentration.

A LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) sensor network to track walking persons inside a surveillance area is investigated. A small number of sensor nodes with spatially stationary and partially overlapping narrow LIDAR beams is chosen. As a consequence of this network topology, the area of surveillance is not fully covered with LIDAR beams and thus the accurate tracking of persons walking inside the area of surveillance is challenging, especially in a multi-target situation. To tackle this problem, multiple target tracking based on a sophisticated decentralized track-to-track fusion architecture is developed and evaluated in this paper: dynamic multi-hypothesis tracking (MHT) by independent local trackers is carried out in all sensor nodes; then local track favorites are sent to a fusion center where global track candidates are derived and fed back to the local trackers in order to improve the local tracking. With this architecture a track association success rate of (98.8 ± 0.3)% and a mean square position error of Δp = 6.7 cm were derived from 1000 pairs of random and intersecting trajectories of two walking persons (mean velocity 1.5 m/s). Furthermore, the tracking performance as a function of the target velocity was quantified. The performance of the proposed algorithm was also experimentally evaluated using general-purpose laser scanners.

For active magnetically suspended rotors in flywheel energy storage systems (FESSs), an inexpensive, robust and reliable contactless displacement measurement is needed. This paper evaluates five different ferrite cores of different size and geometry for a possible use as a displacement sensor. The measurement method and procedure which was built to compare the different cores is described in details. Further the measurement results are discussed.

The need to reduce fuel consumption, minimize emissions, and improve levels of safety, comfort, and reliability is expected to result in a much higher demand for electric power in future cars. In order to develop the needed control algorithms and to optimize the required components some kind of virtual prototype environment is needed. Even so for most components good models already exist, an adequate model for the battery is still missing. However, this is needed since the battery has a large impact on the efficiency of the total system. Therefore this work presents a battery model applicable for EV and HEV simulations.

The development of new medical imaging methods with high sensitivity and specificity for early cancer detection is of paramount interest in medical diagnostics. Since carcinomas are known to often show an increased stiffness compared to the surrounding healthy tissue, the so-called elastography is well-suited for their detection in soft tissue like the female breast. In elastography, the spatial distribution of elastic properties like the E-modulus is displayed as a two-dimensional map. In order to deduce the E-modulus distribution from the tissue's response (i.e. the estimated internal tissue displacements) to an external compression force, the inverse problem governed by the equilibrium equations of linear elastostatics must be solved. In this paper we propose a new approach to reduce the influence of the spatially non-stationary displacement estimation variance on the E-modulus reconstruction, and thus improve the reconstruction quality.

Ultrasonic shear wave elastography is a dynamic method that allows in-vivo measurement of the shear elasticity of human tissue. Recovering elasticity maps from time-harmonic wave data remains a major challenge since the calculation of spatially resolved elasticity parameters encounters ill-posed inverse problems due to noise and unknown boundary conditions. Therefore, compliance-weighted-imaging (CWI) is introduced to ultrasonic shear wave elastography for the measurement of elasticity ratios and the visualization of elastic heterogeneities by the amplitude alteration of harmonic shear strain due to wave scattering. In this paper, the results of experiments performed on tissue-mimicking phantoms comprising a planar interface between the hard and soft compartments, and a soft cylindrical inclusion embedded in stiffer background are shown and compared to theoretical models. The proposed ultrasound based CWI method is potentially interesting for the detection of pathological lesions such as medical applications.

For bioimpedance measurement, the design of a voltage controlled current source (VCCS) is important to have a good compromise between performance of final results and patient safety. VCCS should have simultaneously large output impedance and wide bandwidth. In this paper, we compare between the Tietze topology, with and without Negative Capacitance Circuit (NCC), and the Improved Howland Current pump ICSA topology. Best results were reached with a Tietze current source with NCC over a wideband frequency range from 10 KHz to 1 MHz. The experiments show that the Tietze VCCS is able to drive loads of 25 Ω to 10 KΩ with current amplitude below 0.5 mA within the accuracy of 0.57% in practice. This fulfills even the requirements for bioimpedance measurements especially at high frequency and high load impedance.

In this work, a method for the determination of the ion concentration and the diffusion coefficient of lithium ions in a phosphorus oxynitride will be presented. The reproducibility of the parameter extraction and the entire measurement process will be evaluated. The obtained results are in the value range of publications of similar sample properties.

We report about the manufacturing of sensor devices for detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air. The sensor comprises three fully inkjet-printed layers of (i) silver interdigitated electrodes (SIDE), (ii) multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and (iii) poly (styrene-co-maleic acid) partial isobutyl/methyl mixed ester (PSE). We have found that inkjet printing of MWCNT layers and a PSE layer on top yields an interfacial layer leading to the formation of a MWCNTs/PSE composite-like structure. The printed layers act as chemiresistive vapor sensors due to the change of electrical resistance in presence of selected VOCs. The sensor responses to various VOCs were studied by varying the concentration of the chemicals in the air between 50 and 500 ppm. The sensing mechanism can be understood as a fractional volume change of the inkjet-printed polymer that occurs during exposure to VOCs, resulting in a structural alteration of the MWCNT-polymer network. We have found that the sensor response can be defined as a function of the VOC's concentration. To investigate the morphologies of the inkjet-printed thin films, profilometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed.

systems for radio-frequency identification (RFID) realize a bidirectional wireless communication between a reader device and cheap passive tags (e.g., an RFID chip with an antenna printed on badges for access-control systems) in the near field of an antenna. This paper deals with the automatic and fast tuning of the resonant reader antennas in the widely used 13.56-MHz frequency band, resulting in a performance improvement and an increased read/write range. A novel RFID reader system is proposed with a tuning transformer for the automatic adjustment of the resonant circuit center frequency. This is achieved by shifting the magnetic operating point (i.e., the biasing direct-current (dc) magnetization) of a Ni-Zn ferrite transformer by means of an additional dc winding. The operation principle and the performance potential of this device are demonstrated by measurements on a prototypical RFID system. © 2011 IEEE.
