Dynamic allocation of multiple cloud resources adapting to application needs over time can be achieved by taking advantage of wide-area VM live migration technologies. However, migration of VMs across different subnets, potentially in multiple clouds, requires networking support to keep the network state of moving VMs unchanged. Two problems make traditional solutions to machine mobility inefficient in this scenario: (1) administrative overheads due to coordination requirements between moving machines and the network infrastructure; and (2) degraded network performance of machines moved away from their “home” networks. New solutions are needed to efficiently support the migration of virtual machines over multiple cloud providers. The user-level virtual network architecture presented in this paper implements mechanisms to allow VM migration over clouds without requiring support from the physical network infrastructure, and automatically reconfiguring virtual networks to maximize the network performance of migrated virtual machines.

This paper presents an overview of modeling light propagation through biological media by solving the photon transport equation. Different variants of the photon transport equation (PTE) are discussed. Several methods for modeling static distributions and the transient response are presented. A discussion on how to mix and match electromagnetic problems with the PTE is also provided.

The research presented here is an attempt to use a very basic, low cost and non-specialized microcontroller for image processing tasks. The applications emanating from such an attempt will result in inexpensive face detection, intelligent motion sensors to low cost vehicle counting systems. We have been able to develop a system based on Microchip dsPIC microcontroller that implements edge detection of still images. Hardware-based signal processors such as Texas Instrument DSP (Digital Signal Processing) or Field Gate Arrays (FPGA) are generally an expensive solution for image processing applications. On the other hand a conventional 8-bit microcontroller doesn't have enough capability to handle memory intensive DSP algorithms. In this regard, Microchip offers a tradeoff between cost and performance. Although performance does not compete with TI DSPs or FPGAs, the proposed system yet provides a sound platform to perform Signal processing directly on embedded hardware. Our research presents a preliminary approach to perform any type of image processing task using microchip 16-bit Microcontrollers and 16-bit digital signal controllers. Even though this attempt is aimed at Edge Detection, the research opens up possibilities for numerous other algorithms of signal and image processing that can be implemented using the same low cost hardware.

We have developed a dynamic hand gesture recognition system that can simplify the way humans interact with computers and many other non-critical consumer electronic equipment. The proposed system is based on the well-known “Wave Controller” technology developed at the University of Wollongong and will revolutionize video gaming and consumer electronics control interfaces. Currently, computer interfacing mainly involves keyboard, mouse, joystick or gaming wheels and occasionally voice recognition for user input. These modes of interaction have restrained the artistic ability of many users, as they are required to respond to the computer through pressing buttons or moving other apparatus. Voice recognition is seen as unreliable and impractical in areas where more than one user is present. All these drawbacks can be tackled by using a reliable hand gesture recognition system that facilitates interaction between users and computers and other consumer electronic equipment in real time. This will further enhance the user experience as users no longer have any physical connection to the equipment being controlled. This system can also be extended to a sign language system for the benefit of the disabled including those with speech disabilities.

Key frame extraction methods aim to obtain a set of frames that can efficiently represent and summarize video contents and be reused in many video retrieval-related applications. An effective set of key frames, viewed as a high-quality summary of the video, should include the major objects and events of the video, and contain little redundancy and overlapped content. In this paper, a new key frame extraction method is presented, which not only is based on the traditional idea of clustering in the feature extraction phase but also effectively reduces redundant frames using the integration of local and global information in videos. Experimental results on the TRECVid 2007 test video dataset have demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed key frame extraction method in terms of the compression rate and retrieval precision.

The nonlinear process of stimulated Raman scattering is important for silicon photonics as it enables optical amplification and lasing. However, generally employed numerical approaches provide very little insight into the contribution of different silicon Raman amplifier (SRA) parameters. In this paper, we solve the coupled pump‐signal equations analytically and derive an exact formula for the envelope of a signal pulse when picosecond optical pulses are amplified inside a SRA pumped by a continuous‐wave laser beam. Our solution is valid for an arbitrary pulse shape and fully accounts for the Raman gain‐dispersion effects, including temporal broadening and group‐velocity reduction. Our results are useful for optimizing the performance of SRAs and for engineering controllable signal delays.

The AAAI-10 workshop program was held on July 11-12, 2010, at the Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta, Georgia. The workshop program included 13 workshops covering a wide range of topics in artificial intelligence. There were several presentations on particular formalisms for combining the levels of planning from the perspectives of classical planning, motion planning, POMDPs, search-based planning, and temporal logic-based constraints. Henry Lieberman from Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media laboratory presented work developing a platform for knowledge acquisition and usage from expert users, built upon experience with eliciting information from nonexperts in a collaborative manner. The objective of the AAAI Workshop on Goal-Directed Autonomy (GDA) was to encourage discussion and novel contributions on intelligent agents that can self-select their goals. Jeremy Baxter from QinetiQ focused on user interaction, while Nick Hawes described a goal-directed reasoning framework for controlling a mobile robot.

Extended models of the W-PESQ method are presented which are capable of assessing the subjective quality of noisy speech signals sampled at 48 kHz. Two methods are proposed: a version backward compatible with the W-PESQ standard, called EW-PESQ(E), and another, called EW-PESQ(R), in which the original psychoacoustic models are entirely replaced with alternative formulations available in the literature. Performance figures of both the EW-PESQ(E) and the EW-PESQ(R) in predicting the subjective quality of extrawide-band speech (sampled at 48 kHz) corrupted with broad-band and environmental noise are reported. In both cases the results obtained reveal a strong correlation (approximately 97%) with mean opinion scores.

With the emergence of multiple cloud providers of Infrastructure-as-a- Service, it becomes possible to envision a near-future when high-performance computing users could combine services from different clouds to access huge numbers of resources. However, as more administrative privileges are exposed to end users, providers are required to deploy network security measures that present challenges to the network virtualization technologies that are needed to enable inter-cloud communication. This paper studies these challenges and proposes techniques to enable unmodified applications on resources across distinct clouds. The techniques are implemented in TinyViNe, an extension to ViNe, a virtual networking technology for distributed resources in different administrative domains. The results of evaluating TinyViNe on a WAN-based testbed across three sites are reported for a bioinformatics application (BLAST) and MPI benchmarks. The results confirm that TinyViNe enables cross-cloud computing while having little impact on application performance. TinyViNe also has auto-configuration and "download-and-run" capabilities for easy deployment by users who are not knowledgeable about networking. © 2009 IEEE.

With the growth of Utility Grids and various Grid market infrastructures, the need for efficient and cost effective scheduling algorithms is also increasing rapidly, particularly in the area of meta-scheduling. In these environments,users not only may have conflicting requirements with other users, but also they have to manage the trade-off between time and cost such that their applications can be executed most economically in the minimum time. Thus, choosing of the best Grid resources becomes a challenge in such a competitive market. This paper presents two novel heuristics for scheduling parallel applications on Utility Grids that manage and optimize the trade-off between time and cost constraints. The performance of the heuristics is evaluated through extensive simulations of a real-world environment with real parallel workload models to demonstrate the practicality of our algorithms. We compare our scheduling algorithms against other common algorithms used by current meta-schedulers. The results shows that our algorithms outperform other algorithms by minimizing the time and cost of application execution on Utility Grids. Copyright © 2009, Australian computer Society, Inc.
