With the emergence of multiple cloud providers of Infrastructure-as-a-Service, it becomes possible to envision a near-future when high-performance computing users could combine services from different clouds to access huge numbers of resources. However, as more administrative privileges are exposed to end users, providers are required to deploy network security measures that present challenges to the network virtualization technologies that are needed to enable inter-cloud communication. This paper studies these challenges and proposes techniques to enable unmodified applications on resources across distinct clouds. The techniques are implemented in TinyViNe, an extension to ViNe, a virtual networking technology for distributed resources in different administrative domains. The results of evaluating TinyViNe on a WAN-based testbed across three sites are reported for a bioinformatics application (BLAST) and MPI benchmarks. The results confirm that TinyViNe enables cross-cloud computing while having little impact on application performance. TinyViNe also has auto-configuration and ¿download-and-run¿ capabilities for easy deployment by users who are not knowledgeable about networking.

Message-Passing is the dominant programming model for distributed memory parallel computers and Message-Passing Interface (MPI) is the standard. Along with point-to-point send and receive message primitives, MPI includes a set of collective communication operations that are used to synchronize and coordinate groups of tasks. The MPI_Barrier, one of the most important collective procedures, has been extensively studied on a variety of architectures over last twenty years. However, a cluster of Platform FPGAs is a new architecture and offers interesting, resource-efficient options for implementing the barrier operation. This paper describes an FPGA implementation of MPI_Barrier. The premise is that barrier (and other collective communication operations) are very sensitive to latency as the number of nodes scales to the tens-of-thousands. The relatively slow processors found on FPGAs will significantly cap performance. The FPGA hardware design implements a tree-based algorithm and is tightly integrated with the custom high-speed on-chip/off-chip network. MPI access is available through a specially-designed kernel module. This effectively offloads the work from the CPU and OS into hardware. The evaluation of this design shows significant performance gains compared with a conventional software implementation on both an FPGA cluster and a commodity cluster. Further, it suggests that moving other MPI collective operations into hardware would be beneficial.

BLASTn is a ubiquitous and important tool used for large scale DNA analysis. As such, it is a good candidate for acceleration with FPGAs. The aim of this paper is two-fold. First, building upon our prior BLAST work we describe a design composed of multiple cores that can be scaled in two dimensions. The ungapped extension and a second dimension are new in this work. Second, we use this non-trivial example to explore spatially scalable designs. To provide the ability to move the design to a future generation chip, a mathematical model of performance that incorporates all of the system design parameters and the user's preference (high throughput vs low latency) is developed. We demonstrate here that the model correctly predicts the optimal ratio between the two dimensions on a Xilinx Virtex-4 and measures four to five times faster performance figures as compared to a state of the art general purpose processor.

Wavelet neural networks (WNN) have recently attracted great interest, because of their advantages over radial basis function networks (RBFN) as they are universal approximations. The integration of wavelet theory into soft computing, and combining the class of feedforward neural networks with results from the wavelet theory, new networks structure is proposed, called wavelet networks to approximate any non-linear function. In this paper, we propose a procedure that proves the ability of these networks to improve the performance of Vector Control scheme of Induction Motor. A Two Activation Function Wavelet Network (TAFWN) is adopted as an alternative controller to achieve relatively more robustness than conventional feedforward neural networks (NNs). Finally, a simulation is carried out in order to validate the proposed model and demonstrate its efficiency with complex functions and high non-linearity. Simulation experimental results are reported, in fact, the obtained results prove that the objectives required by the authors were attempt with great success. Copyright © 2009 SoftMotor Ltd.

Raman amplifiers provide a simple and yet powerful platform for optical amplification needs in modern optical communication networks. This paper reviews recent progress in Raman amplifier research and highlights some non-conventional future of the field. Although the low-noise and wavelength-independent gain properties of Raman amplifiers have been long exploited in optical communication networks, researchers strive to tap into the huge potential of non-linear optics to improve reach and performance. Alternative approaches used to enhance the quality of Raman amplified networks such as the use of novel pumping schemes that can ensure uniformity in gain and noise performance are discussed. Finally, the advances in research on Raman amplification in monolithically integrated silicon waveguides which should fuel wide deployment in the coming years are presented.

For an oversampled linear phase (LP) perfect reconstruction filter banks with lattice structure, the synthesis FB is not unique. However, existing methods to choose a synthesis FB for ldquooptimalrdquo noise reduction may destroy the linear phase and lattice structure property. This paper studies the noise reduction design problem for oversampled filter banks (FBs) preserving lattice structure. Both the optimal design and worst case design are considered, where the former caters for the noise with known power spectral density (PSD), and the latter for the noise with unknown PSD. Explicit formula for the former and LMI-based algorithms for the latter are provided.

Wavefront aberration caused by turbulent or rapidly changing media can considerably degrade the performance of an imaging system. Adaptive optics can dynamically compensate these wavefront distortions and so provide corrected imaging. We developed an affordable adaptive optic system which combines CMOS sensor and LCOS display technology with the FPGA devices parallel computing capabilities. High speed and accurate wavefront sensor is fundamental part of any adaptive optic system. In this paper, an efficient FPGA implementation of the Sum of Absolute Differences (SAD) algorithm is introduced which accomplish correlation based wavefront sensing. This architecture was implemented on a Spartan-3 FPGA and is capable to measure the incoming wavefront at the speed of sensor data acquisition speed.

This paper presents a comparative study between scale, rotation and translation invariant descriptors for shape representation and retrieval. Specifically, we studied Fourier, angular radial transform and image moment descriptors for shape representation. Since shape is one of the most widely used image feature exploited in content-based image retrieval systems, we studied for each descriptor, the number of coefficients needed for indexing and their retrieval performance. Results showed that moment descriptors present the best performance in both terms of shape representation quality as well as in the amount of required coefficients.

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, in cooperation with Stanford University's department of computer Science, was pleased to present the 2009 Spring Symposium Series, held Monday through Wednesday, March 23-25, 2009, at Stanford University. The goal of the Agents That Learn from Human Teachers symposium was to investigate how we can enable software and robotics agents to leam from real-time interaction with an everyday human partner. The aim of the Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning systems symposium was to initiate the development of a problem repository in the field of qualitative spatial and temporal reasoning and identify a graded set of challenges for future midterm and long-term research. The Experimental Design symposium discussed the challenges of evaluating AI systems. The Human Behavior Modeling symposium explored reasoning methods for understanding various aspects of human behavior, especially in the context of designing intelligent systems that interact with humans. The Intelligent Event Processing symposium discussed the need for more Al-based approaches in event pro-cessing and defined a kind of research agenda for the field, coined as intelligent complex event processing (iCEP). The Intelligent Narrative Technologies IIAAAI symposium discussed innovations, progress, and novel techniques in the research domain. The capability to efficiently retrieve knowledge in response to specific user queries offers the potential to create decision support systems of unprecedented utility, i.e., systems which can accelerate the learning process. This paper presents such an architecture, the Type 2 Knowledge Amplification by structured expert randomization (T2K) system. This system differs from traditional expert systems in the way knowledge rules are matched with queries. The T2K has the ability to acquire knowledge from corresponding domains to answer queries from domains in which the system has less knowledge. This system also solves the word mismatch problem by modifying queries using word substitutions. This is done through creative transformations and optimizations of knowledge rule antecedents and consequents. By pairing rules with identical antecedents or consequents, we are able to induce new rules from existing knowledge without explicit elicitation from the user. The technique presented in this paper attempts to transform both the rules in the knowledge base as well as the query in order to find a matching action for a specified query.
