Two iterative identification algorithms, a gradient and a least-squares based, are developed for output error (OE) and output error moving average (OEMA) systems. Compared with recursive approaches, these two off-line iterative algorithms use all the measured input-output data at each iterative computation (at each iteration), and thus can produce highly accurate parameter estimation. The basic idea of the iterative methods proposed is to adopt the interactive estimation theory: the parameter estimates relying on unknown variables are computed by using the estimates of these unknown variables which are obtained from the preceding parameter estimates. The simulation results confirm theoretical findings.

This paper applies the multi-innovation identification theory to study the parameter estimation problem for CARMA models, and presents the multi-innovation extended stochastic gradient algorithm by expanding the scalar innovation to an innovation vector, and analyzes and proves the convergence properties of the algorithms involved. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithms are effective.

In this paper, we combine the hierarchical identification principle with the least square algorithm to identify the parameters of dual-rate sampled-data systems. The hierarchical identification principle is to decompose the identification model of dual-rate systems to several identification sub-models with smaller dimensions and fewer parameters to be estimated, and to present the hierarchical least squares identification algorithm with less computation efforts. We prove the convergence of the algorithm proposed. The simulation example is included.

A multi-innovation least-squares (MILS) identification algorithm is presented for linear regression models with unknown parameter vectors by extending the conventional standard least-squares (LS) algorithm from the viewpoint of innovation modification. Because the proposed MILS algorithms use p innovations at each iteration (the integer p > 1 being an innovation length), the accuracy of parameter estimation is improved compared with the standard LS algorithm. The performance analysis and simulation results show that the proposed MILS algorithm is consistently convergent. Moreover, we introduce a new interval-varying MILS algorithm, for which the key is to change the interval dynamically, in order to deal with cases where some sampled data are missing. Further, we derive an auxiliary model based MILS for output error moving average systems with colored noises. The simulation results of an ARX system is included.

Globalization is making both developed and developing countries think about effective and efficient strategies that will advance their economies and social development. Throughout the history of civilization, engineering has played a critical role in economic development. Engineers are key not only in solving local problems but also in knowledge creation and knowledge transfer. Thus, it is imperative that technical know-how be supplemented with professional skills to develop an 'adaptive leader' who is capable of addressing the multiple challenges of an ever changing world. The key-question posed by the 21st century global economy to engineering educators and stake-holders is this: "How can education in science and technology help to reduce poverty, boost socio-economic development, and take the right decisions for sustainable and environmental compatible development?" To answer these questions, a global approach is needed: and this can only be accomplished by a "team" which has its roots in all regions of the world, i.e. which is enabled to think globally and then act locally. There's a need to establish effective engineering education processes of high quality around the world to assure a global supply of well-prepared engineering graduates. This paper describes the reasons for the creation in October 2006 of IFEES - the International Federation of engineering Education Societies. It will describe the vision, mission, and key strategies of IFEES. It will also describe some of the initiatives currently underway and how the various engineering education stakeholders can leverage and benefit from engaging with IFEES, thus strengthening the organizational capacity of engineering education societies throughout the world. The paper will share plans to help members learn from each other's best practices and even failures and how those organizations that have been in existence for quite some time (ASEE was founded in the late 19th century) can contribute to the institutio

Driver distraction has been recognized as a significant cause of traffic incidents. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate Electroencephalography (EEG) dynamics in response to distraction during driving. To study human cognition under specific driving task, we used Virtual Reality (VR) based driving simulation to simulate events including unexpected car deviations and mathematics questions (math) in real driving. For further assessing effects of the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) between the deviation onset and math presented on the EEG dynamics, we designed five cases with different SOA. The scalp-recorded EEG channel signals were first separated into independent brain sources by Independent Component Analysis (ICA). Then, the Event-Related-Spectral-Perturbations (ERSP) measuring changes of EEG power spectra were used to evaluate the brain dynamics in time-frequency domains. Results showed that increases of theta band (5approx7.8 Hz) and beta band (12.2approx17 Hz) power were observed in the frontal cortex. Results demonstrated that reaction time and multiple cortical EEG sources responded to the driving deviations and math occurrences differentially in the stimulus onset asynchrony. Results also suggested that the theta band power increase in frontal area could be used as the distracted indexes for early detecting driver's inattention in the future.

Using LSA and text segmentation to improve automatic Chinese dialogue text summarization

Automatic Chinese text summarization for dialogue style is a relatively new research area. In this paper, Latent Semantic Analysis （LSA） is first used to extract semantic knowledge from a given document, all question paragraphs are identified, an automatic text segmentation approach analogous to Text＇filing is exploited to improve the precision of correlating question paragraphs and answer paragraphs, and finally some ＂important＂ sentences are extracted from the generic content and the question-answer pairs to generate a complete summary. Experimental results showed that our approach is highly efficient and improves significantly the coherence of the summary while not compromising informativeness.

This paper shows that one of soft actuators, Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite (IPMC) can be modeled in terms of distributed port-Hamiltonian systems with multi-scale. The physical structure of IPMC consists of three parts. The first part is an electric double layer at the interface between the polymer and the metal electrodes. The frequency response of the polymer-metal interface shows a fractal degree of gain slope. Then we adopt a black-box circuit model to this part and give considerations for distributed impedance parameters. The second part is an electrostress diffusion coupling model with bending and relaxation dynamics. This part is represented by an electro-osmosis, which is a water transport by an electric field, and a streaming potential, which is an electric field created by a water transport. We discuss the relationship of stress and bending moment induced by swelling. The third part is a mechanical system modeled as a flexible beam with large deformations. The representation has the capability extracting the control structure based on passivity from distributed parameter systems possessing a complex behavior.
