In this preliminary study, we examined in human volunteers the performance of the developed prototype device for non-invasive quantification of blood alcohol concentration (BAC) by near-infrared light which is highly transparent to the body. We aimed at applying the results to the final goal of developing a novel alcohol-based vehicle ignition-interlock device. Accumulating evidence shows that one of the ethyl alcohol absorption peaks in the near-infrared region is present at 1,185 nm. We combined this with our recent development of a non-invasive optical method for blood glucose measurement, which we call pulse glucometry, using blood volume pulsations in a finger within a cardiac cycle. Thus, we developed a novel method, pulse alcometry, for non-invasive measurement of BAC. We calculated second derivative values of optical density (ODλ") to remove baseline over a band including three wavelengths, 1,150 nm, 1,185 nm, and 1,220 nm. Then, a simple linear regression analysis was performed with the measured ODλ" to predict BAC levels. In 3 healthy male volunteers, during alcohol intake and washout, periodic optical measurements using the present device were made simultaneously with collection of blood samples for in vitro BAC analysis. In leave-one-out cross validations within an individual, the measured BAC and the predicted BAC correlated well (r = 0.773~0.846, mean absolute error = 0.134~0.333mg/ml). We conclude that, from the results of this preliminary study, the new method appears to be able to estimate BAC levels non-invasively. However, further investigations in a larger group of subjects will be needed in order to determine fully the operational performance of this new measurement system.

In order to automate the routine inspections in large industrial environments a mobile robotic system is being developed in the project RoboGas Inspector . The robot's sensor-head consists of different instruments for remote sensing using multiple measurement principles. First results show that passive IR-thermographic imaging can be used to detect leaks in pipes as well as liquid spills on the ground. The measurable effects are the temperature profile disturbance due to expansion of pressured gas and evaporative cooling, respectively. Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) measurement systems provide for quantitative gas concentration measurements and feature a high sensitivity due to the active measurement principle. On the contrary, TDLAS systems measure just the concentration along a path at a time and require a diffusely reflecting background. Using a Pan-Tilt Unit, objects/areas can be scanned and abnormal gas concentrations can be identified. This contribution introduces the project RoboGas Inspector and presents the used measurement technology as well as first results.

The problem of reachable set estimation for linear systems subject to both time delay and polytopic uncertainties is considered in this paper. Our aim is to find a set as small as possible to bound the states starting from the origin by inputs with peak values. The Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional together with free-weighting matrix technique are proposed to derive some sufficient conditions for the existence of an ellipsoidal bound to estimate the states. This method eliminates the conservatism generated by Jensen's inequality and obtains a much tighter reachable set bound. In addition, the number of variables to be determined is smaller than the previous result based on the maximal Lyapunov functional. Finally, an example illustrates the merits of our proposed results.

The problem of reachable set bounding for a class of linear systems subject to both discrete and distributed delays is addressed in this paper. First, a new criterion is derived to give an ellipsoid which bounds all the states starting from the origin by inputs with peak-values. The constraint with a special structure that appeared in our previous result is removed by combining the Jensen integral inequality and the reciprocally convex approach. In addition, the obtained condition brings a tighter reachable set estimation with lower computational complexity. We also extend the above result to systems with polytopic uncertainties. Finally, an example is presented to illustrate the merit of our proposed method.
