Irrigation water for onshore greenhouses may be produced using seawater in a humidification-dehumidification process. That is, greenhouse air may be humidified, and thus evaporatively cooled, using seawater sprayed at an evaporator placed at one side of the greenhouse and subsequently dehumidified by a condenser placed at the opposite side. Simple and inexpensive condenser designs are crucial for economical viability of greenhouse desalination. Innovative condenser design was created in this study consisting of a cooled plate surface upon which water vapor, carried by saturated air, condenses at its outer surface. The plates are made of plastic and are constantly cooled by coolant flowing through internal passages within the plate. Experimental tests were done to investigate condensate production rate per unit area. These results were then compared to conventional vertical fin-tube bank condenser designs used by other investigators. The comparison showed that a higher rate of condensate production (an increase of 16.4%) is achieved using the simpler and less expensive condenser developed in this work.

Mobile robots for carrying out service tasks in industrial plants and on infrastructure gain importance e.g. due to aging assets and demographics. In order to identify key areas requiring research and development activities a questionnaire-based online survey was conducted in 2009. Addressed were participants working in industry knowing best about needs potentials obstacles and pitfalls of applying mobile service robots in their companies/industrial sector. This paper presents the surveying methods and the obtained results which mainly cover chemical and automotive industries due to their world-wide economic significance as well as their research and innovation intensity.

The lift response of the separated flow over a wing to different actuator input disturbances is used to obtain linear models useful for closed-loop control design. The wing has a small aspect ratio, a semi-circular planform, and is fully stalled at a 20° angle of attack. Individual pulse-like disturbances and step-input disturbances with randomized frequency were inputs to the actuator, and the lift coefficient increments were output signals. The "prediction error method" system identification technique was used to obtain two linear models of the separated flow. A 4th order model reproduced the non-minimum phase behavior of the pulse input, but did not work well for control purposes. The second model identified was limited to first order. The first order model proved to be useful for designing a proportional-integral feedback controller capable of suppressing lift oscillations in unsteady flows. Good suppression of lift oscillations was observed in the experiment after a step change in wind tunnel flow speed occurred. When the control system was tested with a randomized freestream velocity, it reduced the root-mean-square lift oscillation by 50 percent relative to the uncontrolled case. 2010 by David R. Williams. The ability to maintain a constant lift force on a low aspect ratio semi circular wing using pulsed blowing active flow control is experimentally investigated. Dynamic models of the wing's response to pressure (pulsed blowing) actuation and the response to longitudinal gusting are obtained through black-box system identification methods. Robust closed loop controllers are synthesized using a mixed sensitivity loop shaping approach. An additional feedforward disturbance compensation is designed based on a model of the unsteady aerodynamics. The controllers show good suppression of lift fluctuations at low frequencies, but as frequencies increase the control performance degrades due to fundamental physical limitations. The limitations are related to the leading edge vortex formation time. © 2010 by David R. Williams.

Hydrostatic transmissions, also called hydrostatic gears, have been widely used in mobile working machines and off-road vehicles such as construction and agricultural machines. This kind of transmission offers important advantages like continuously variable transmission with high power density, maximum tractive force at low speeds and reversing without changing gear. The automatic electronic control of hydrostatic transmissions, which depend on a number of measurable values, has become more common in industrial practice. To ensure the reliability and safety at least a two-channel redundant system for the measuring channels is required. In this paper, a general model-based approach using a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy observer for analytical redundancy of the oil pressure measuring process in hydrostatic transmissions is developed. It has been shown by experimental results that this approach can be used to estimate the pressure values under varying load conditions and different driving situations.

Once dynamic process models are available, model-based analysis, design and testing methods can be applied. The availability of (semi)automated reliable identification methods that yield high quality models would greatly reduce engineering efforts and enhance the utilization of model-based applications in practice. In this paper, two novel semi-automated identification methods for systems with friction that utilize open-loop recorded data are presented. The methods are applied to modeling electro-mechanical throttles available as test stand. They are used in Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) simulation in context of developing motor control functions in automotive applications. The case study illustrates the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed identification methods.

The approach to development methods which are described in paper allows possibility extension for minimizing costs and widely external hardware industrial control systems utilization. There is described development method of control applications by industrial WinPLC/WinPAC and REX control compiler in comparison to classical development methods that need expensive RT measurement cards and produce only one purpose development solution. The project is based on specification of development process of designed control schemas of prepared applications to an industrial utilization by direct connection and implementation to the chosen control system WinPLC/WinPAC. Paper deals with a way how to produce a solution for control applications that are prepared, designed and implemented in MATLAB-Simulink to the target platform. The multiplatform control system REX is used as a bridge between MATLAB and target platform.

This paper presents a novel measurement ways based on grid based measurement resources integration for the current requirements of dynamic condition, reconfiguration and collaboration for the modern production cases. Based on the analysis of the principle of the integrated measurement ways, the dynamic reconfigurable strategies are discussed, and the implemental models is presented. To carry out the data exchange among shared measurement services, the notion of service chains and global virtual measurement bus are studied, which is based on the shared service collaboration. The applying measurement cases show that the proposed way can solve the problems of measurement resource coupling and the dynamic measurement reconfiguration with high reliability and high effectiveness.
