The use of flexible and environmentally friendly materials to replace lead materials-based energy harvesters could lead to a big breakthrough in wearable electronics. Polymeric composites including organic polymer and inorganic nanoparticles are suitable candidates. To this aim, lead-free Zinc doped Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.10Ti0.90O3 (Zn-BCZT) nanoparticles were produced using a sol-gel technique and embedded into a polymer matrix (PVDF-HFP) (poly(vinylidene fluoride cohexafluoropropylene) via solution casting process in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent with different ratio in order to enhance their electrical, and mechanical properties. The results illustrate that the real part of permittivity increased as a function of solvent volume and the tangent loss tends to increase. The Young's modulus is increased with the addition of solvent from 226 to 319 MPa and tensile strength increased from 13.5 to 17.5 MPa as well. The improved tensile were may attributed to the uniform dispersion and good interfacial interaction between PVDF-HFP polymer and Zn-BCZT particles. The findings show that solvent has an influence on the modification of dielectric and mechanical characteristics. © 2022 IEEE.

Model of rough surfaces with Gaussian processes

Surface roughness plays a critical role and has effects in, e.g. fluid dynamics or contact mechanics. For example, to evaluate fluid behavior at different roughness properties, real-world or numerical experiments are performed. Numerical simulations of rough surfaces can speed up these studies because they can help collect more relevant information. However, it is hard to simulate rough surfaces with deterministic or structured components in current methods. In this work, we present a novel approach to simulate rough surfaces with a Gaussian process (GP) and a noise model because GPs can model structured and periodic elements. GPs generalize traditional methods and are not restricted to stationarity so they can simulate a wider range of rough surfaces. In this paper, we summarize the theoretical similarities of GPs with auto-regressive moving-average processes and introduce a linear process view of GPs. We also show examples of ground and honed surfaces simulated by a predefined model. The proposed method can also be used to fit a model to measurement data of a rough surface. In particular, we demonstrate this to model turned profiles and surfaces that are inherently periodic. © 2022, CC BY.

Nowadays, there is a great demand to develop lead-free piezoelectric materials for wearable energy harvesters. Among the numerous piezoelectric materials, Calcium Barium Titanate Ba1-xCaxTiO3 (BCT) has been extensively used because of it has approximately similar as lead Titanate Zirconate (PZT). In this study, BCT (with mathbf{x}=mathbfmeasurement.mathbf{2} nanoparticles were synthesized using sol-gel method in order to be used to fabricate flexible and biocompatible nanogenerators (NGs). These NGs are made out of composites containing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer and different percentages of BCT ranging from 10 to 20 wt. %. Piezoelectric performance of NGs were examined using artificial vibration source as well under tapping finger. The performance of the NGs were correlated to their electrical properties measured by impedance spectroscopy. The results illustrate that the nanogenerator with 15 w t. % of BCT nanopowders achieves high piezoelectric performance with a maximum output voltage of 1.56 V under electrodynamic vibration shaker and 15.34 V under tapping finger. The impedance measurements affirms that PENG (15wt. %) is the most suitable nanogenerator. © 2022 IEEE.

In this contribution, a new biocomposite based on natural Palm fibres is explored. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and Doom palm leaf fibres (DPLF) composite is investigated using simple and cost-effective solution mixing method. This study was done to validate the potential of this novel material for pressure sensing. Thin composite layers containing different concentrations of DPLF and MWCNTs have been realized using stencil printing method. Using MWCNT as a first filler in PDMS polymer, contributes to a piezoresistive properties. In order to investigate the impact of DPLF addition on the electrical properties of the composites, electrical measurements were conducted using impedance spectroscopy and linear sweep voltammetry. The results have shown that the addition of DPLF has a huge impact on the electrical behaviour of the composite, significant base resistance increase, potential change in the percolation threshold and increase in sensitivity.

This paper introduces the automation measurement software Flexsensor for capturing resonant spectra, an innovative and extensible software program developed explicitly for measuring and evaluating Silicon Photonic (SiPh) circuits. Wafer-level Wafer-level Silicon Photonics allows the integration of numerous optical components and structures on a single wafer. However, researchers and engineers need precise and repeatable measurements to characterize them and face significant challenges when dealing with large numbers of complex systems on a single wafer. A toolchain gap hampers the measuring of such highly integrated photonic structures: While the setup necessitates the integration of an optimized hardware and software toolchain, there is neither software nor a standardized way to implement a reproducible measurement routine for a massive set of measurements. Flexsensor allows integration and control of external hardware (tunable lasers, analog-digital converters) and supports measurement data storage and evaluation. The software enables researchers and engineers to efficiently analyze the spectral response of photonic structures and facilitate rapid measuring. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes biosensors designed specifically for dielectric spectroscopy on biological cells while they are in their liquid culture medium, covering the microwave frequency spectrum from 10 GHz to 50 GHz. This frequency range is suitable for measurements with very low concentrations of cells. The biosensors are designed by integrating an inter-digitated capacitor (IDC) with a microfluidic system onto the radio frequency (RF) circuit. Microfluidic systems, on the other hand, provide device reliability prevent potential fluid leakage, and enhance transport for controlling the flow conditions. In this way, noninvasive and contactless analysis of biological cells with a 10 $\mu\mathrm{m}$ diameter was conducted using microwave technology. The in-liquid microwave simulation of fewer than 8 cells going to one cell is successfully performed. In the case of low cell concentration, the response of our biosensor is directly proportional to the number of cells present on the interdigitated capacitor (IDC). This feature enables the quantification of cells using microwave sensing techniques. The described bio-detection method is outlined, demonstrating the enhancements made to improve the accuracy and repeatability of simulations, leading to the achievement of adequate results.

Secret keys play a critical role in secure data transmission, and an efficient secret key generation scheme will enhance the secure transmission rate. However, the secret key is a scarce resource for classical encryption schemes like the Rivest-Shamir-Adleman (RSA) cryptosystem and its counterpart in quantum applications, and we should extract it from all possible random sources to maximize the key rate. In this paper, we investigate the achievable rate of the secret key generation (SKG)-channel-model based on an actual measured multi-mode fiber (MMF) channel, where there is an additional public discussion channel between the legitimate parties, which the adversary can perfectly overhear. In particular, we measure the fiber transmission matrix by digital holography. Based on the real measurements, we show that for 55-mode MMF, we can achieve a positive secret key rate at 51.3 bit/channel use with mode-dependent loss (MDL) at 1 dB and transmit power at 20 dBm. This demonstrates the feasibility of SKG in MMF.

In many nuclear applications, there is a need to extract as much information as possible within the constraints of instrumenting a process, structure, component, or system. We applied Bayesian inference to reconstruct variables of interest in thermal-fluid problems: distribution of heat flux boundary condition from the limited number of point-wise temperature measurements at the wall in a forced convection problem. We show that it is possible to efficiently reconstruct a steady-state heat flux boundary using a physics-based mapping with an appropriate prior distribution of the boundary condition. The inferencing problem includes the source of uncertainty: noisy temperature measurement and inadequately characterized physics model (wall function and turbulent diffusivity) while using the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence model. We compared the result against flow experiments on single-phase turbulent flow in a rectangular channel visualized with infrared thermometry. The advanced high-resolution diagnostic provides temperature distribution and heat flux profile at the heat transfer interface. The measurements are used to validate the proposed reconstruction methodology. When put in suitable locations, the reconstruction gives reasonable accuracy with a small number of sensors. The established Bayesian inference method will be applied to more extensive flow conditions in the near future to understand its usefulness and applicability. The method presented here can potentially support the advancement of nuclear digital twin technology, where we expect new modes of operation and decision-making processes with less human intervention, remote monitoring, and, ultimately, autonomous operation. © 2023 American Nuclear Society, Incorporated.

Lattice vibrations and energy landscape of the isoelectronic semiconductor series CuBr, ZnSe, GaAs, and Ge: The special case of CuBr and its d-level chemistry

We have examined the lattice vibrations and the energy landscape of the isoelectronic diamond and zincblende semiconductor series CuBr, ZnSe, GaAs, and Ge. Vibrations are found to be an increasing function of ionicity, with the cation sublattice always vibrating more strongly than the anion sublattice. These findings are consistent with density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the energy landscape and temperature-dependent molecular dynamics simulations of the atomic-position fluctuations. For CuBr, inclusion of the Cu 3d Hubbard U term is found necessary to stabilize the zincblende structure and to bring its vibrational amplitudes into agreement with experiment. In addition, vibrations are found to strongly affect the CuBr near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure that we have successfully modeled by including displacements in our theoretical Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations. Reverse Monte Carlo structural refinements using large atomic configurations to simultaneously fit x-ray absorption and x-ray total-scattering data support these conclusions, and they reveal strong Cu-Br first-neighbor correlations and asymmetric distributions of interatomic distances in the temperature ranges of both negative and positive thermal expansion. Delineation of the CuBr valence band photoelectron spectrum into its Cu 3d and Br 4p states uniquely reveals their covalent mixing and further supports the DFT results.
