In this study, we implemented the simulation software Comsol Multiphysics to search for a proper proportion of carbon-filled thermoplastic polyurethane (CTPU) and neat thermoplastic polyurethane (STPU) in melt-extruded filaments, and we proposed practical 3D-printed shape for its use in wearables. A comparative study was performed to investigate the impact of 3D-printing temperature and diverse sensor structures via electrical testing. The optimal shape was found to be the ‘space grid’ structure, printing processing temperature of 210°C and the proper proportion of CTPU 60%/ STPU 40%.

Bio-Impedance Spectroscopy (BIS) is a non-invasive method for characterizing biological systems. Converting impedance spectra into the distribution of relaxation times (DRT) allows the separation of overlapping effects without relying on equivalent circuits as impedance models. This transformation significantly reduces signal processing time from several seconds to milliseconds. Therefore, there is a significant need for embedded solutions that implement DRT in microcontroller-based systems. Following a detailed evaluation of various methodologies, NNLS combined with Tikhonov regularization was selected for its ability to achieve an 83.33% reduction in execution time. This paper presents a novel approach for implementing this optimized DRT extraction in STM32-based embedded systems. The novel implementation achieves processing times of 74 ms for a 101-frequency data set on the STM32 while utilizing only 2.69 kB of RAM. The system successfully extracts DRT peaks with different magnitudes and their relative relaxation times for 51-frequency and 101-frequency datasets. We demonstrate equivalent circuit parameter extraction with relative errors below 3.5%. This work establishes a foundation for portable BIS analysis, with potential applications in areas such as medical diagnostics, food state characterization, and plant monitoring.

This papers presents a low-cost electromyograph combined with marker-less pose detection using computer vision. The developed and build three channel electromyograph is tested by measuring the muscle activity of one leg, while the subject is performing squats. Simultaneously, a camera records the exercise and subsequently the image data is evaluated by OpenPose. We could show that this simple setup enables the user to evaluate the muscle activity of three independent muscles as function of the knee angle. These results are in good agreement to the expected muscle activity. The sample-rate of the EMG device is 2 kHz. The overall cost of the developed device is under 100 €. To our knowledge, this is the first work combining these two methods for dynamic exercises. The method is well customizable for other sports due to the battery powered device and its handy size. © 2021 De Gruyter Oldenbourg. All rights reserved.

Ultrasonic phased arrays can be used for safe navigation in difficult environmental conditions such as rain, fog or dust with the goal to support e.g. optical sensors. Due to the high computational effort required, these sonar systems often rely on additional single-board-computers, increasing the size and cost. Therefore, we present a sonar system based on a single microcontroller (MCU) consisting of a line array of eight efficient 40-kHz transducers inserted into a 3D printed waveguide combined with a line array of twelve digital MEMS microphones in a T-configuration. This approach enables unambiguous single-pulse 2D-scans with increased range using only a minimum number of components for optimum size and cost. Due to the reduced number of microphones required, the computational effort is minimized as well. We show that a single low-cost STM32 MCU is sufficient for controlling the electronics and handling the frequency-domain signal processing based on conventional beamforming with frame rates of up to 10 Hz. In an anechoic chamber, we measured a field of view of ±70° and an angular resolution of 15.2°. The power consumption is approximately 250mW while scanning. Consequently, this air-coupled sonar system is a viable solution for mobile and cost-sensitive applications.

A stable supply of metallic elements such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium is indispensable for plant growth. Therefore, qualitative and quantitative detection of metallic ions in aquaponic environments has been of interest. Impedimetric sensors are attractive for ease of preparation, low cost, and high sensitivity. In this paper, we present an impedimetric interdigitated electrode array for the determination of K(I), Ca(II), and Mg(II) based on functionalized PEDOT:PSS. We optimize the parameters for sensor fabrication, demonstrate the impedance characteristics and ion response properties of functionalized PEDOT:PSS, and use a hybrid algorithm to realize the classification of the array signal. It was found that the heating temperature and the number of coating layers significantly affect the conductivity of the sensor. We made the calibration curves of PEDOT:PSS/CuPc towards the ions at the concentration range of 1 – 10 mM. The different functionalized PEDOT:PSS exhibited verified selectivity for metallic ions. The PCA-SVM algorithm was employed as a classification model to identify metallic ions in liquids effectively

This paper is about electrochemical investigations of nitrite (NO2−) and nitrate (NO3−) detection in water. Herein, a study based on functionalization of carbon screen-printed electrodes (CSPE) with chitosan and tetrasulfonated copper (II) phthalocyanine nanocomposite (Chit/Ts-CuPc). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) surveys were carried out with ferri/ferrocyanide probe and analytes for preliminary investigations to confirm the efficacity of the electrode's functionalization. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) measurements then were performed for more precise and sensitive detection with different analytes concentrations. Further studies regarding pH optimization, electrodes kinetics and calibration curve will be performed to calculate the sensor's figures of merits. The security of IoT (Internet of Things) devices and the protection of sensitive information processed by these devices such as personal data, sensor values, process-related information is an important and difficult challenge. A major task in IoT communication is secure identification of devices. Unfortunately, traditional cryptographic methods are often not suitable for IoT devices due to their limited hardware resources. However, typical methods are computationally intensive, require a large amount of memory, and have a high-power consumption. On the other hand, Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) are low-cost and lightweight hardware-based primitives that can be used as a security component to protect data against third parties and thus increase security of a device. In this paper, the challenges and vulnerabilities in the development of PUF-based authentication protocols are presented. To this end, a security analysis of different approaches known from literature are discussed. Furthermore, possible attack vectors and prevention techniques are also considered.

The diagnosis of epilepsy based on visual inspection of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals is inherently complex and prone to error, even for physicians, mainly due to the large number of signals involved and the variability between individuals. These same challenges make the development of portable epilepsy diagnostic systems for everyday use difficult. Key obstacles include the immense complexity of signal processing and the inherent ambiguity in accurately classifying disease. For these reasons, we propose in this paper the deployment of compressive sensing to condense EEG signals while preserving relevant information, allowing seizure classification based on systematically selected features of the reconstructed signals. Based on a dataset comprising EEG recordings from 13 epileptic patients with various seizure types, we explore the deployment of the discrete cosine transform (DCT) and random matrix multiplication for compression ratios ranging from 5% to 70%, balancing data reduction with signal fidelity. Following the extraction of relevant features, selection was performed based on mutual information and a correlation matrix to preserve only the most relevant features for analysis. For classification, following a comparison of adequate machine learning models, XGBoost is chosen as it realizes a classification accuracy of 98.78%. The CS method was implemented on an STM32 microcontroller and a Raspberry Pi for reconstruction and classification, to demonstrate feasibility as an embedded system. At 70% compression, significant improvements have been observed: 70% file size reduction, 84% decrease in transmission time (from 2518.532s to 400.392s), and substantial energy savings (e.g., from 11.5±0.707 mWh to 4.5±0.707 mWh for Patient 12). Thereby, the signal quality was maintained with PSNR of 16.15±3.98 and Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.68±0.15. The use of LiDAR sensor technology for people detection offers a significant advantage in terms of data pro-tection. In LiDAR point clouds, unlike camera images, people can be detected but not identified without further information. LiDAR sensors are, therefore, particularly suitable for detecting people in publicly accessible places and reacting accordingly to the number of people, for example, with on demand services at airports. Due to the anonymity of people in LiDAR point clouds, personal data is protected, and approval for implementing such a detection system is simpler than that of comparable camera systems. In this paper, we present a measurement setup that covers the configuration of the sensor setup, the creation of a dataset for training neural networks for object detection, and the object detection itself. The measurement setup generates an average of 2408 automatically labeled point clouds per sensor, per hour. The SECOND network trained with this dataset achieves average precision for the intersection over union of the 2D view with a threshold of 0.5 of 87.67 %, the PV-RCNN of 85.74 % and an average precision for the average orientation similarity with a threshold of 0.5 of 89.56 %, and for the PV-RCNN of 87.81 %.

This paper presents an inductive measuring system using a two-pancake coil setup for monitoring the electromagnetic properties of steel sheets. An experimental setup was developed to perform measurements on cooling sheet metal samples during real structural transformations. Additional to the experiments with hot steel sheets, a simulation in COMSOL Multiphysics was used to validate the measurement results. The experiments conducted with the cooling material confirmed the suitability of the measurement system for the application described. The results obtained in this work show that by evaluating the phase shift between the exciting magnetic field H and the induction B, the structural transformation can be reliably monitored. In this work, a phase shift of 2 degrees was measured when a steel sheet was cooled by about 200 degrees Celsius.
