Advances in information and communication technologies have significantly transformed engineering education. Virtual laboratories are increasingly adopted to enhance student interaction with control system simulations. The improved visualization and interaction capabilities of modern computers offer a more organic way to teach theoretical foundations. This paper describes the implementation of a methodology for teaching control theory that until now was entirely online in a face-to-face environment at the University of the Federal District in Brasilia, Brazil. This methodology utilizes virtual laboratories with CoppeliaSim, MATLAB, and the EVA mobile robot to teach control theory focused on single-input, single-output (SISO) systems for mobile robot tracking and obstacle avoidance applications. The results of the face-to-face implementation are compared to those of the fully online methodology, revealing that in-person teaching significantly enhances the quality of instruction. ©2024 IEEE.

This paper introduces methods for efficiently classifying mangoes intended for export, a market valued at approximately 4,500 million baht annually. The classification process is divided into two primary components: size categorization and quality assessment. The first phase involves categorizing mango sizes into four distinct categories (M, 1L, 2L, 3L), while the second phase focuses on assessing mango quality, particularly detecting anthracnoseâ€"a prevalent disease affecting mangoes. This detection is achieved through image processing techniques, where images are converted into binary representations and analyzed using both Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Comparative analysis reveals that CNN outperforms ANN in size classification, achieving a remarkable train accuracy of 99.16% and a test accuracy of 88.0%. Furthermore, in quality classification, CNN demonstrates a train accuracy of 91.0% and a test accuracy of 88.0%. These findings underscore the effectiveness of CNN techniques in accurately classifying mangoes for export, thereby facilitating improved quality control and market competitiveness. In this paper a new variant of the widely used Rapidly exploring Random Tree (RRT∗) algorithm is proposed. The main goal of this variant is to improve the efficiency of the generated path, in both computation time and the quality of the path. In a previous work by the authors, an improved version RRT∗N was proposed, where a normal probability distribution was used to control the generation of the random nodes. The proposed variant utilizes an intelligent fuzzy logic system (FLS) to control the generation of the random nodes and commands the robot to the required target introducing an intelligent fuzzy adaptive RRT∗N path planning approach (FA-RRT∗N). The proposed approach not only reduced the time required about 29.5 % of the time required by the RRT∗, but also generally resulted in shorter path about 63% of the path generated by the traditional RRT∗. © 2023 IEEE.

Low-cost navigation systems for ground vehicles often rely on the fusion with Global Positioning System (GPS) for improved state estimation. In this study a low-cost gyroscope is fused with a GPS for improved vehicle heading angle estimation using several Artificial Intelligence (AI) based architectures that include Shallow Neural Networks (SNN), Multi-Layer Neural Networks (MLNN), and Adaptive Neuro- Fuzzy Inference Systems (ANFIS). The primary goal behind using AI based sensor fusion is to obtain a highly accurate vehicle heading estimation suitable for autonomous navigation applications. When available, the GPS signal is used to correct the vehicle's heading angle. The neural networks and ANFIS methods both use the difference between the GPS signal and the heading angle from the integrated gyroscope as inputs. The performance achieved is shown and analyzed. According to the results obtained, the MLNN provides the most accurate heading estimates. © 2023 IEEE.

In this study, we developed a process of heuristically searching and selecting the optimal viewpoint for capturing a good composition of a group of moving subjects with an autonomous indoor drone camera. The subjects on the drone's camera screen are represented using a Gaussian mixture model. The Kullback-Leibler divergence between the Gaussian mixture model and a user-defined reference composition is evaluated and defined as the composition evaluation value. The drone searches for a viewpoint in a 3D space to optimize this value using particle swarm optimization. To facilitate the search, a recursive Gaussian process is employed to update the prediction of the observation result. Through the proposed method, a sufficient optimal viewpoint can be obtained, even for moving subjects. © 2023 IEEE.

This study focus on passive and active learning within the context of robotics education on public high schools. By synthesizing research findings and practical insights, this paper offers valuable recommendations for educators aiming to optimize the delivery of robotics education in public high schools, addressing the significance of the utilization of appropriate resources and technologies to support effective instruction. We implemented two distinct teaching methodologies to compare and study students' reactions and learning outcomes: Group A experienced a passive methodology, while Group B engaged with an active methodology. We conducted a survey and the results show that the majority of the students prefer the active approach used in classes.

Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs) are considered promising materials for optoelectronics due to their unique optical and electric properties. However, their potential has been limited by the occurrence of atomic vacancies during synthesis. While post-treatment processes have demonstrated the passivation of such vacancies, they increase process complexity and affect the TMDC’s quality. We here introduce the concept of pretreatment as a facile and powerful route to solve the problem of vacancies in MoS2. Low-temperature nitridation of the sapphire substrate prior to growth provides a nondestructive method to MoS2 modification without introducing new processing steps or increasing the thermal budget. Spectroscopic characterization and atomic-resolution microscopy reveal the incorporation of nitrogen from the sapphire surface layer into chalcogen vacancies. The resulting MoS2 with nitrogen-saturated defects shows a decrease in midgap states and more intrinsic doping as confirmed by ab initio calculations and optoelectronic measurements. The demonstrated pretreatment method opens up new routes toward future, high-performance 2D electronics, as evidenced by a 3-fold reduction in contact resistance and a 10-fold improved performance of 2D photodetectors. © 2023 American Chemical Society

The implementation of a patient monitoring system and infusion automation which aims to ensure regular and periodic monitoring of inpatient conditions are applied in this system. This embedded system is applied in hospitals and addresses the uneven distribution of healthcare workers in Indonesia, particularly in remote areas. Currently, manual checks by nurses can lead to errors and reduced patient comfort. The improvement supervision is developed in this work. The system monitored body temperature, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, heart rate, and automated infusions. All the embedded systems are connected to Internet of Things (IoT) and a real-time database accessible through an application and web. This system allows doctors and hospital authorities to make decisions based on patient condition history. The testing phase of the system shows four data acquisition devices (temperature, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, and heart rate), an ESP 32, and Firebase as a database, have ability to capture and send real-time data every five seconds and can be accessed by doctors, patients, and hospital authorities. © 2024 IEEE.

Performance analysis on mechanical and machinability attributes of Al6061-B4C-T6 composites processed via hot extrusion

In this study, composite materials with Al6061 alloy matrix and B4C particles reinforcement were produced by hot extrusion process. Fabricated composites were examined for the mechanical and machinability attributes. Al6061 alloy powders (4C particles (4C (3%, 6%, and 9% by weight) of and then cold pressed under 200 MPa pressure. The cold pressed powder metal block was extruded hot after preheating at 550°C for 1 h. Further, the composites were subjected to T6 aging heat treatment after hot extrusion. Microstructure, density, hardness, tensile strength, and wear properties were examined. The effects of cutting speed and cutting force on the machinability were also investigated. In addition, surface roughness and chips formation were examined. High density (99.6%) values were achieved with the extrusion process. With increasing B4C particles ratio, the hardness and tensile values were increased which was substantiated by the fracture morphology of the tensile specimens. It has been observed that tool smearing was high in the machining of the low-reinforced (3% B4C) composite. The highest cutting force was measured as 236 N at a feed rate of 0.27 mm/rev and a cutting speed of 250 m/min. It has also been observed that the average surface roughness decreased with increasing cutting speed and it increased with increasing feed rate. © IMechE 2023.

In this study, a Terahertz (THz) band antenna which can regulate its own resonant frequency without the requirement of manual adjustment is simulated. A polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate is applied onto a rectangular graphene patch antenna. With a voltage potential applied onto the PVDF, the patch antenna can attenuate its frequency by physically changing the shape of the antenna, and in turn its resonant frequency. These antennas are within a 0.1 THz band between 1.32 THz to 1.22 THz measured from a radial bend of a flat surface to r = 75 μm, fitting into a return loss (S11) above -30 dB. Although the return loss did not show consistency, the resonating frequency shifted at a linear rate relative to the cylindrical bending. © 2024 IEEE.
