Aged individuals and astronauts experience bone loss despite rigorous physical *** mechanoresponse is in-part regulated by mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)that respond to mechanical *** delivery of low intensity vibration(LIV)recovers MSC proliferation in senescence and simulated microgravity models,indicating that age-related reductions in mechanical signal delivery within bone marrow may contribute to declining bone *** answer this question,we developed a 3D bone marrow analog that controls trabecular geometry,marrow mechanics and external *** finite element(FE)models were developed to quantify strain environment within hydrogels during *** marrow analogs with gyroid-based trabeculae of scaffold volume fractions(SV/TV)corresponding to adult(25%)and aged(13%)mice were printed using polylactic acid(PLA).MSCs encapsulated in migration-permissive hydrogels within printed trabeculae showed robust cell populations on both PLA surface and hydrogel within a *** 14 days of LIV treatment(1 g,100 Hz,1 h/day),cell proliferation,type-I collagen(Collagen-I)and filamentous actin(F-actin)were quantified for the cells in the hydrogel *** LIV increased all measured outcomes,FE models predicted higher von Mises strains for the 13%SV/TV groups(0.2%)when compared to the 25%SV/TV group(0.1%).While LIV increased collagen-I volume 34%more in 13%SV/TV groups when compared to 25%SV/TV groups,collagen-I and F-actin measures remained lower in the 13%SV/TV groups when compared to 25%SV/TV counterparts,indicating that both LIV-induced strains and scaffold volume fraction(*** scaffold surface)affect cell behavior in the hydrogel ***,bone marrow analogs offer a robust and repeatable platform to study bone mechanobiology.

Industrial manipulators are deployed for a range of repetitive tasks in cluttered environments in which the robot must rapidly execute safe trajectories. While nominal robot models exist, true dynamic models of deployed manipulators are typically unavailable. This paper addresses the problem of generating dynamically feasible, collision-free, time-optimal kinematic reference signals for redundant manipulators with unknown dynamics. A novel economic iterative learning control approach is developed to leverage repeated task executions to learn a time-optimal control signal for an uncertain robot model. Simulation results demonstrate the performance of the approach for a 7-DOF manipulator. An experimental analysis is performed to understand the impact of the initial reference trajectory on converged performance. © 2023 IEEE.

The increasing amount of waste in a limited space creates a problematic scenario, particularly in urban areas. Thus, methods of diverting waste wherever possible have become a trend, such as the utilization of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for alternative energy. In this study, residual wastes were characterized and analyzed for the energy potential it could provide for Baguio City. The majority of the waste composition comprises plastics (35.63%) and paper (44.83%). The association of heating value to moisture was found to have a similar trend with other related studies. Finally, the performance parameters of the produced RDF patterned from Baguio City WACS were measured, where the HV (12.673 MJ/kg), moisture (2.414%), ash (4.757%), and sulfur (0.215%), satisfy the condition of RDF 3 based on ASTM standards. The conducted study may be used as a pilot test for the waste-to-energy scheme, especially since Baguio city has no established WtE system in place to date. © 2024 The Authors.

Load-Side Dynamics Introduces Complex Effects on Orthotic Actuator Performance in Benchmarking

Series elastic actuators are increasingly adopted in wearable robots, due to superior sensing and actuating capabilities provided by the added internal compliance. However, when evaluating their performance in benchtop setups, the dynamics of the physical human–robot interface (i.e., external compliance) are usually overlooked despite it causing energy dissipation and delays in power transmission. This work closes the gap by emulating in a test bench the physical human–robot interaction dynamics and validating actuator performance against commonly used performance indices, including torque bandwidth, torque tracking, and transparency. The results show a significant impact of the interaction dynamics on the actuator performance. When interface dynamics is present, decreasing the actuator (internal) compliance has little to no effect on its bandwidth. When delivering a walking torque, decreasing internal (actuator) and external (interface) compliance has the same decreasing effect on the motor’s peak electrical power in the hip joint. Conversely, the motor peak electrical power decreases with an increase in internal (actuator) compliance but increases with an increase in external (interface) compliance in the knee joint. As such, this work demonstrates the importance of including interaction dynamics as a norm in designing and evaluating actuation units in wearable robots.

Experimental investigation of reciprocating ferrofluid marble motion driven by repulsive and attractive magnetic forces: A scheme for mixing enhancement during transportation

Liquid marbles have found extensive applications in digital microfluidics, particularly in fields such as chemistry, diagnostics, and biotechnology. In this study, we present the first investigation into the reciprocal motion of ferrofluid marbles (FMs) manipulated using both repulsive and attractive magnetic forces. These forces are modulated by varying the magnetic dipole induction within the FM. Key components in this manipulation include Helmholtz coils and a permanent magnet. In previous studies, mixing and transportation operations have been conducted in digital microfluidics sequentially and distinctly. By employing pulse-width modulation (PWM) signals to control the current in the Helmholtz coils, we achieve simultaneous mixing and transport of the FMs, which accelerates these operations for biological applications. Understanding the underlying physics is essential for the practical applications of this technique. Our findings reveal two distinct types of motion: net attraction while oscillating (NAWO) and net repulsion while oscillating (NRWO). We also examine the effects of parameters such as the PWM signal frequency, duty cycle, and Helmholtz coil current. Furthermore, we develop a regime map to distinguish between NAWO and NRWO motions. Finally, an analytical model is proposed and validated through experimental testing to describe the dynamic response of the FMs. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

This paper reports on the development of a novel soft robotic system for remote ultrasound applications. Direct contact of the ultrasound probe with the patient’s body represents a safety risk and therefore control of the probe’s positioning and applied force is a crucial task. The proposed robot uses a passive control system that provides safe interaction between the robot and the patient by leveraging soft robotics technology. The soft robot’s structure can be considered as a nonlinear spring which can be designed to exert a safe force within the robot’s workspace to guarantee the safety of human–robot interaction. The literature suggests that effective ultrasound imaging of both the heart and abdomen requires six degrees-of-freedom. These degrees-of-freedom consist of three translational motions, which are achieved using a novel hybrid soft cable-driven parallel robot, and three wrist motions, which is based on a universal joint design. The experimental results show that the robot can achieve all these six degrees-of-freedom, and its blocking force can be engineered to generate a uniform force within the workspace. Amid the growing interest in triboelectric nanogenerators(TENGs)as novel energy-harvesting devices,several studies have focused on direct current(DC)TENGs to generate a stable DC output for operating electronic ***,owing to the working mechanisms of conventional DC TENGs,generating a stable DC output from reciprocating motion remains a ***,we propose a bidirectional rotating DC TENG(BiR-TENG),which can generate DC outputs,regardless of the direction of rotation,from reciprocating *** distinct design of the BiR-TENG enables the mechanical rectification of the alternating current output into a rotational-direction-dependent DC ***,it allows the conversion of the rotational-direction-dependent DC output into a unidirectional DC output by adapting the configurations depending on the rotational *** to these tailored design strategies and subsequent optimizations,the BiR-TENG could generate an effective unidirectional DC *** of the BiR-TENG for the reciprocating motions of swinging doors and waves were demonstrated by harnessing this *** study demonstrates the potential of the BiR-TENG design strategy as an effective and versatile solution for energy harvesting from reciprocating motions,highlighting the suitability of DC outputs as an energy source for electronic devices.

The accelerated adoption of photovoltaic (PV) systems for renewable power generation in the Philippines will yield a tremendous amount of PV waste. However, the country lacks a comprehensive framework for understanding PV module waste volume growth and optimally siting Treatment, Storage, and Disposal (TSD) facilities for PV waste management based on minimum siting factor. The study aims to develop a regional framework that utilizes a geographic information system (GIS)-based approach to find the potential sites and optimal locations of TSD facilities in Laguna, Philippines, based on the estimated PV module waste growth of solar energy systems with service contracts and minimum siting criteria under department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Administrative Order 2013-22. By 2060, the projected amount of PV module waste in Laguna province will be around 162,230 metric tons based on the waste projection results. The suitable sites cover around 19,720.5 hectares or 11.21% of the total land area of Laguna, which were determined by various siting factors that encompass social, economic, and environmental factors and obtained using binary suitability analysis and vector overlay analysis. The optimal locations of the two TSD facilities were identified using strategic positioning based on hotspot analysis, clustering algorithm, and proximity analysis. Consequently, the distance and GHG emissions of the two optimal locations were calculated. Indeed, the approach will serve as a guide for policymakers and other stakeholders in understanding PV module waste growth and strategically and optimally position TSD facilities on suitable sites for efficient and effective PV waste management. © Author(s) 2024.

This study enlightens the importance of rearing water quality to Betta fish health. A water quality monitoring system was developed based on water quality parameters namely water pH, temperature (°C) and TDS level (ppm). Fuzzy Logic Algorithm was applied to predict the possibility of the fish to get infected by the disease using combination of the water quality parameters value. Graphical User Interface (GUI) was developed to test the efficiency of the fish disease prediction system using fuzzy logic algorithm before the fuzzy rule been embedded to the IOT system. Arduino Uno Wi-Fi R2.0 and Blynk Apps used for enabling the system to update the aquarium water quality to owner in real-time. Hydroponic technology implemented in this project for recirculate rearing water inside the fish tank. Theoretically, the aquaponic system will help regulate the water tank parameters in optimum range and Betta Splendens should be free from all diseases. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
