An active orthosis （AO） is a robotic device that assists both human gait and rehabilitation therapy. This work proposes portable AOs, one for the knee joint and another for the ankle joint. Both AOs will be used to complete a robotic system that improves gait rehabilitation. The requirements for actuator selection, the biomechanical considerations during the AO design, the finite element method, and a control approach based on electroencepha-lographic and surface electromyographic signals are reviewed. This work contributes to the design of AOs for users with foot drop and knee flexion impairment. However, the potential of the proposed AOs to be part of a robotic gait rehabilitation system that improves the quality of life of stroke survivors requires further investigation.

Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV), known as underwater drones, are any vehicle that are able to operate underwater without human occupant. AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) are one of categories of these vehicles which operate independently of direct human input. This AUV is required to have a navigation system that can manoeuvred 6 Degree of Freedom (DOF) and able to estimate the exact position based on the determined trajectory. Fuzzy Kalman Filter (FKF) method is used to estimate the position of the AUV. This process is used to maintain the accuracy of the trajectory. The performance of FKF algorithm on some several trajectory cases show that this method has relatively small Root Means Square Error (RSME), which is less than 10%.

Structured fluids are known to be dependable of their structural *** of such fluids may be found in different industries as chemical,biomedical,manufacturing,food and *** mathematical models to describe structured fluids are normally composed by a coupled system:one constitutive equation(based on viscoelastic models) and one kinetics equation(an equation which describes the structural level evolution in time of the material).The works found in the literature use linear viscoelastic constitutive equations which do not account the dependence of the elastic modulus with the microstructural level in their fundamental *** this sense,the present work aims to evaluate,through numerical simulation,the effect of a new constitutive equation in rheological tests and compare its results to those of the model developed by Souza Mendes and Thompson(2013),in which those considerations are not made.

In transportation, BLDC motors are required to have high torque. This BLDC electric motor is designed to drive an electric car. Increased torque can be done in many ways one of which is the selection of the stator material. Effect on the generated torque can be studied by replacing its stator materials. Design was begun with determining the electrical circuit and the coil for the excitation power. Electric motors which was simulated in this paper was a 3-phase BLDC motor. Voltage and current data were analyzed to study the motor performance when different core materials used. It can be concluded that applying ferrite materials stator core reduced core loss, while using ferrite core on the stator slots produces higher voltages and lower currents. Based on the magnitude of the torque produced by the electric motors, ferrite materials was more suitable to be used as slots of the stator core for better motor.

A way to deal with the variations in the link quality of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is the use of strategies for Dynamic Channel Allocation (DCA). The first step to perform DCA is estimating the channel quality, so that the network nodes can decide if a channel change is needed, and the best channel to be used. This paper proposes a distributed approach with nodes dedicated to monitor channel quality, by using the Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) and the Link Quality Indicator (LQI) to identify low quality channels. This approach is acceptable in industrial WSN, since the network deployment can be performed with adequate planning. Furthermore, the sensor nodes do not need to stop their operation for monitoring the channel quality. As a first step, experiments were performed in a real industrial environment to identify the relation between RSSI and LQI traces, and the Packet Error Rate for different channels, by using IEEE 802.15.4 radios operating in the 2.4 GHz band. © 2014 IEEE.

The interest of many research groups regarding manufacture of composite materials by using natural fibers is increasing world-wide. The main objectives involve the improvement of mechanical properties, mainly those related to resistance and elasticity. In the present study in a first stage, polymer concrete specimens were elaborated by using an unsaturated polyester resin, silica sand and luffa fibers; after, they were gamma irradiated at different doses and their mechanical properties were evaluated. Two different silica particle sizes (0.15 mm and 0.6 mm), and four different luffa fiber concentrations (0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2 wt%) were used, as well as 50 and 100 kGy of radiation dose. The results show a gradually diminution of compressive strength and modulus of elasticity when adding luffa fiber concentration. Nevertheless, such mechanical features are increasing when polymer concrete is gamma irradiated.

Adhesives, especially epoxies, are widely used as joints, repairs and corrosion protection in the petroleum onshore and offshore industry. Performance temperature is a key factor for such material. Mainly they are designed by the thermal properties but when they are in real service operation the behavior changes drastically. In this work, three different epoxy adhesives used in the offshore industry are characterized by DSC, DMA and TGA methods. The main objective is to verify if thermo mechanical tests on adhesives produces enough information to use in temperature service situation instead of test single lap joints (SLJ) at different temperatures. From the tests results it can be seen that adhesive SLJ should be tested in order to proper service design. © 2013, Souza and Reis;licensee Springer.

The outlook concerning the occurrence of industrial accidents has led to the implementation of response systems based on geoprocessing tools, which are widely adopted in emergency for such ventures, since they have helped and served as a support for decision making, as well as for the preparation of guidelines aimed at managing emergencies. Nuclear power plants, because they constitute types of industrial activities that present dangerous conditions and attention regarding security are characterized as hazardous, especially due to consequences that occurred from large accidents— such as Chernobyl (1986) and Fukushima (2011)—highlighting the importance to its negative impacts, since the occurrence of accidents at nuclear power plants may affect surrounding areas, thus exposing a set of elements that are part of the environmental dynamics that integrates the catchment area where this type of plant is situated. In this way, through an integrated view of the region where the nuclear complex is located in Angra dos Reis City (Rio de Janeiro State) and, also, by aggregating information that portray the geobiophysical reality of its surroundings, several elements were incorporated into a database developed in a virtual environment, in which was produced a geographic information system (GIS) that presents a complex of variables that, once considered, can enhance various analysis in order to support emergency situations and planning, as well as guidelines that help define actions from the occurrence of accidental events at the nuclear plant.

The Use of Exoskeletons of Shrimp(Litopenaeus vanammei)and Crab(Ucides cordatus)for the Extraction of Chitosan and Production of Nanomembrane

Chitin is widely distributed in nature, being the main structural component of the exoskeleton of crustaceans and is non-toxic, biodegradable and biocompatible. These exoskeletons once discarded become an industrial waste creating environmental pollutant. In order to find an alternative use, the present work exploits the extraction of the chitosan from chitin that is present in the exoskeletons of shrimps Litopenaeus vannamei and crabs Ucides cordatus and transforms it into high valued products, which can help solving the environmental problem as well to provide extra income to the fishermen. One example is the manufacture of nanomembranes from chitosan for the application in medical textiles. Nanomembranes using electrospinning of chitosan solutions (7% and 5wt%) with 100:0 v/v (TFA/DCM) and 70:30 v/v (TFA/DCM) were produced. Morphological properties of chitin and chitosan were studied using SEM, DRX, and thermal properties through TG/DTG and molecular structure by FTIR analysis. TG/DTG showed thermal decomposition of chitosan samples. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated the semi-crystalline structure of chitosan, and highly crystalline structure for chitin. Morphologies of the nanomembranes were also observed from scanning electron micrographs. Results showed that the nanomembranes with 5% chitosan solutions with 70:30 v/v (TFA/DCM) showed facilitation in the formation of the nanomembranes. The nanomembranes of shrimp and crab with 5% 70:30 v/v (TFA/DCM) had higher breaking tension and breaking extension. With positive results obtained, the present work will help the authorities to organize the fishermen to have consciousness in the collection of exoskeleton waste as well as helping to have a better environment.
