Carbon fiber reinforced polymer is mostly used to improve the performance of polymer-based component. Nevertheless, composite material properties depend on many factors such as fiber direction, length of fiber, matrix material and manufacturing process. This work aims to study the effect of fiber length and orientation on material stress-strain relationship. Short carbon fiber length (0.2 and 0.5 mm) reinforced with phenolic resin and long carbon fiber reinforced with commercial matrix material were studied. Long carbon fiber showed higher tensile strength than short carbon fiber with longitudinal direction, whereas slightly difference was observed for transverse direction. The printing path significantly affects failure location as area with lower fiber density exhibit lower local strength. Finite element simulation of the tensile test was carried out with the homogeneous material model which suggested that it could accurately predict the load capacity of printed composite. The bending strength was then computationally predicted. It was found that 0 degree offered higher bending load capacity than 90 degree orientation for all carbon fiber length with smaller difference with shorter fiber. Almost insignificant effect of fiber orientation was observed for 0.2 mm. fiber length. © 2020 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

The properties of composite materials do not depend only on the properties of raw materials but also other parameters such as volume fraction, geometry, dimension and material distribution etc. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer is one of the top choices of composite material because carbon fiber has light weigh with high tensile strength. For fiber-based composite such as carbon fiber composite, directions of carbon fiber with respect to loading direction could also affect to the strength of composite material under load. In this work, the properties of short carbon fiber-resin composite were investigated (fiber length of 0.2 mm.) with two different fiber orientations, i.e. 0 and 90 degrees to applied load. The 3D printing technique was employed in order to control carbon fiber direction and minimize material loss leading to material cost reduction. It was found that 3D printing technique could control direction of fiber in most case. However, at area with high curvature, the unexpected fiber direction was observed due to post hot process during which material flow was expected. It should also be noted that fiber path during 3D printing process may be very crucial as it could result in low strength local area due to low fiber density. This area could promote stress concentration leading to final fracture. © 2020 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

Classifying shape and form is a core feature of engineering design and one that we do this instinctively on a daily basis. Matching similar components to then reduce unique component counts, determining whether a competitors design infringes on copyright and receiving market feedback on product styling are all examples where shape and form comes into play. However, shape and form can be perceived in different ways from purely mathematical (e.g. shape grammars) to wholly subjective (e.g. market feedback) and these perceptions may not entirely *** paper examines the mathematical and human perceptions of shape and form through a study of classifying shapes that have been interpolated between one another, and in doing so, highlights the disparity in perceptions. Following this, the paper demonstrates how the emergent field of Machine Learning can be applied to capture mathematical and human perceptions of shape and form resulting in a means to twin this feedback into product development.

Shot peening process could create compressive residual stress and increase surface hardness and hence also used to improve material surface properties in case thermal effect is to be avoided. The shot peening process parameters such as pressure which result in different shot impact velocity could affect the compressive residual stress distribution which results in different post-process material properties. The ability to understand and predict the effect of process parameters on stress distribution could be very useful to control and obtain material properties as required. In this work, a shot peening process commercially available locally was investigated. The residual stress distribution after shot peening of SKD11 was studied using the finite element (FE) technique. A single shot impact was simulated. A maximum velocity with a miximum impact angle was assumed. The computational predictions showed higher compressive residual stress developed with increasing shot velocity as expected due to higher impact energy. However, experimental results suggested that the process arrangement and machine control highly affect the properties of the material after process. The compressive residual stress and surface hardness obtained experimentally was almost unchanged with an increase in pressure from 0.35MPa to 0.6MPa. It was found that, due to machine arrangement, an increase in impact velocity at higher pressure was relatively small and did not observed in all effected area due to fixed arrangement of nozzle and samples. Hence, research results suggested that a detail computational methodology including the effect of unevent impact velocity and impact angle should be employed to increase the predictive ability of the FE model. The current work could be extended to include such effects with no major difficulty to develop useful information for the design of shot peening process for any specific machine and arrangement. © 2020 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland

Combinatorial design such as configuration design, design optioneering, component selection, and generative design, is common across engineering. Generating solutions for a combinatorial design task often involves the application of classical computing solvers that can either map or navigate design spaces. However, it has been observed that classical computing resource power-law scales with many design space models. This observation suggests classical computing may not be capable of modelling our future design space *** meet future design space modelling needs, this paper examines quantum computing and the characteristics that enables its resources to scale polynomially with design space size. The paper then continues to present a combinatorial design problem that is subsequently represented, constrained and solved by quantum computing. The results of which are the derivation of an initial set of circuits that represent design space constraints. The study shows the game-changing possibilities of quantum computing as an engineering design tool and is the start of an exciting new journey for design research.

Various and critical electrocatalytic processes are involved during the redox reactions in the Li-S batteries,which extremely depend on the surface structure and chemical ***,single-atom concept unlocks a route to maximize the use of surface-active atoms,however,further increasing the density of active site is still strictly limited by the inherent structure that single-atoms are only highly-dispersed on ***,we provide a viewpoint that an elaborate facet design with singlecrystalline structure engineering can harvest high-density surface active sites,which can significantly boost the electrocatalyst performance for excellent Li-S ***,the single-crystal CoSe_(2)(scCS)exhibits three-types of terminated(011)facet,efficiently obtaining the surface with a high-rich Co^(3+)–Se bond termination,in contrast with lots of surface grain boundaries and dangling bonds in polycrystalline CoSe_(2).Surprisingly,the surface active sites concentration can reach more than 69%.As anticipated,it can provide high-density and high-efficient active sites,enormously suppressing the shuttle effect and improving the reaction kinetics via accelerating the conversion and deposition of polysulfides and *** surface lattice strategy with element terminated mode is a promising approach for designing electrocatalyst effect-based energy system,not merely for Li-S batteries.

Over the past decades, our understanding of thermal transport in amorphous materials has predominantly relied on the inherently harmonic Allen-Feldman theory, which has been found to be insufficient. In this study, the Wigner transport formalism is adopted to explicitly account for anharmonicity. In studying the thermal transport in amorphous silicon, the results highlight that amorphous materials are not generally computationally equivalent to crystals with disordered primitive cells. A method that leverages the properties of the two-mode terms in the Wigner transport formalism is proposed to predict the bulk thermal conductivity of amorphous materials using finite-size models. In doing so, the need for mode classification schemes required in the Allen-Feldman theory is eliminated, and similarities are discovered between the two-mode terms and the carriers commonly used to describe thermal transport in amorphous materials, i.e., propagons, diffusons, and locons. Two competing trends are identified that shed light on the recently discovered anomalous decrease in the high-temperature thermal conductivity in some amorphous materials.

To improve the efficiency of surgical skill transfer and proficiency in laparoscopic surgery, an objective method of quantifying surgical skills was developed. Surgical trainings for laparoscopic nephrectomy were conducted using cadavers, and the movements of surgical instruments were measured using Mocap system in 46 trainings. Because the surgical techniques required are different depending on the surgical process, the entire nephrectomy was divided into three surgical processes (Part 1: colon mobilization, Part 2: renal vascularization, and Part 3: dissection of the remaining tissue), and skill analysis was performed for each process. Surgeons were categorized into three groups according to the number of surgical experiences (novice: 0-9 surgeries, intermediate: 10-49 surgeries, and experts: 50 or more). Three-group tests were conducted on 111 features extracted from the surgical instrument movement data. The three-group tests showed that there were significant differences among the three groups in the surgical processes: part 1, part 2, and part 3. Principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted using the features that showed significant differences in the efficiency of the operation. © 2025 IEEE.
