It is important that first year engineering students learn that the engineering design process involves more than mathematics and physics. To accomplish this, students choose design projects from a variety of disciplines, developed with Engineers Without Borders (Canada) and situated in either a developing country or a remote area of Canada. All projects required, not only a technical solution, but also consideration of ethics, health and safety, economics, and impact on the community. Among the design projects were a rain-water harvesting system and ceramic water filter for villagers in Cambodia and a press for extracting oil and producing biodiesel fuel from seeds of the Jatropha shrub, which grows in West Africa. The impact of this approach on student satisfaction and success is discussed. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

There have been a number of concerns regarding the balcony spill plume equation provided in North American standards and codes. These include: lack of verification by full-scale experiments and application of the equation for high atria even though it was developed for low-height atria. As a result of these concerns, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) initiated a project to evaluate the balcony spill plume equation used in North American codes and standards (RP-1247). The primary research conducted, as part of RP-1247, was a series of full-scale experiments conducted to investigate smoke flow in balcony spill plumes and the resulting mechanical exhaust requirements for an atrium. The research project included CFD modeling studies to investigate smoke entrainment in the balcony area and smoke entrainment in high atria. In this paper, the results of a CFD model study, which investigated the variation of plume mass flow rate with elevation in a simulated atrium, are presented. Results from the CFD model study were compared to existing engineering correlations. A new correlation was also developed for the variation in mass flow rate with elevation for a balcony spill plume. This correlation extends the present correlations to high elevations at which no experimental data is available. © 2008 ASHRAE.

In-service teacher training that focuses on Active Learning to teach Science, Technology, engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education topics in K-12 has become quite prevalent. One such program, Design Technology and engineering for America's Children (DTEACh), has offered summer STEM training workshops for teachers for over fifteen years. The participants are usually excited about the new training and the changes that they plan to make in classroom instruction. After the excitement fades, though, do the teachers implement the techniques presented in the training workshops? This study looks at the effects of the DTEACh training program on participants. A survey of the immediate effects and opinions of teachers was conducted at the end of each day of the two-week training held in 2004. Results show the teachers have a positive perception of the training. This paper seeks to investigate the effects of the DTEACh program on the instructional style of the teacher participants. Are the techniques presented in the training used by the teachers years later? Do the teachers recognize the method they are using? To answer these questions and others, teachers who participated in a DTEACh summer training workshop within the last seven years were surveyed to determine the instructional styles they use in the classroom. The results show that the majority implement the instructional techniques presented in the training. However, less than half of the teachers could describe the 5-step DTEACh teaching method presented to the participants and used to structure the training. This lack of recognition of the method is an unexpected finding, deserving of further investigation. The results of the study also revealed that the teachers who took the DTEACh training workshop three or more years before the survey showed very similar responses to teachers who attended the workshop more recently, thus indicating that use of techniques presented in the training workshop is not diminishing signi

This study analyses braking behaviour of train drivers and estimates drivers' mental condition using a train simulator. The velocity deviation recognised by drivers is defined by the difference between the present vehicle velocity and the desired velocity that enables the vehicle to stop at the desired position if the present deceleration is kept constant. Observing the relation between the velocity deviation and the braking operation enables the detection of abnormal driving behaviour. The phase-plane trajectory of the velocity deviation and the brake command with mental workload indicates a large velocity deviation and repetition of the braking operation, while the trajectory without mental workload indicates that both the velocity deviation and the brake command gradually approach the origin of the coordinate axes. © 2008 Taylor & Francis.

Conceptual study on hypersonic airplanes with Mach 5 cruising capability is performed in order to improve the speed of intercontinental air transportations. Requirements for engine performance, thrust to mass ratio and heat resistant structure are discussed. As a result, reference concept of a hypersonic airplane with pre-cooled turbojet engine with liquid hydrogen fuel is shown. Then, a small hypersonic flight experiment is planned for demonstration of Mach 5 cruising technologies. Aerodynamic shape of the experimental vehicle is examined by CFD and wind tunnel tests. Safe and efficient surgical operations depend on a work environment larger than the individual operating room (OR) and on communications at different levels of the hospital organization. Extensive communication is needed before and during surgery to ensure that surgical rooms, equipment, and supplies;patients;surgeons;supporting personnel;and accompanying documentation are all ready at the appropriate times. In this article, we compile the results of three of our studies of communication activities outside ORs, with the goal of identifying opportunities and challenges in the workflow of surgery. The first study demonstrates the amount of communication work performed by OR coordinators. The second study demonstrates the potential functions of a whiteboard in communication. The third study describes an organizational learning strategy of proactive event reporting. We apply computer-supported cooperative work and organizational learning concepts to the findings and suggest ways in which information technology may improve surgical workflow. © 2007 Springer-Verlag London Limited.

Recent studies about variable nozzles, that are a rectangular type nozzle and an axisymmetric type nozzle, of the precooled turbojet engine (S-engine) which are developed for the demonstration of the key technologies for the propulsion system of the hypersonic airplane and the first stage propulsion of the TSTO space plane are described in this paper. For the rectangular nozzle, three types of C-shaped carbon/carbon composite cowls which includes subscale model of the precooled turbojet engine are fabricated and the fine attachment to the ramp is confirmed. For the firing of the S-engine, stainless steel cowl with concrete heat insulator are fabricated and tested for 20 sec. Axisymmetric variable plug nozzle which is made of C/C material is fabricated and pressurized by the cold flow test. The axisymmetric plug nozzle can be operative up to 0.57 MPa of nozzle inlet pressure. Copyright © 2008 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. All rights reserved.

This session will present preliminary findings from Prototyping the Engineer of 2020: A 360-degree study of Effective Education (P360), funded by the National Science Foundation. The study is designed to provide empirically based guidance for engineering programs seeking to recruit and retain diverse students and to prepare all new engineers for work in a changing global economy. Researchers identified six institutions that are, in different ways, already producing engineers with some of the attributes of the Engineer of 2020: Arizona State University, Harvey Mudd College, Howard University, MIT, the University of Michigan, and Virginia Tech. Brief presentations will identify educational and institutional practices and policies that appear to be especially effective in producing engineers with superior design, interdisciplinary, and contextual knowledge and skills. Presenters will also discuss linkages between effective curricula, instruction, and student experiences and supportive institutional cultures, practices, and policies.

Flagellar swimming is one of the swimming methods used by micro-organisms to advance in aquatic environment. The undulating motion of the flagella was successfully imitated to create propulsion for a medical swimming micro robot. The influence of a head section on the performance of such a robot is shown analytically. Swimming experiments demonstrate forward and backward swimming of a novel magnetically driven swimming tail. We intend to use the flagellar swimming tail in a three tail configuration for neurosurgical intervention in the ventricular system.
