This session will present preliminary findings from Prototyping the Engineer of 2020: A 360-degree study of Effective Education (P360), funded by the National Science Foundation. The study is designed to provide empirically based guidance for engineeringprograms seeking to recruit and retain diverse students and to prepare all new engineers for work in a changing global economy. Researchers identified six institutions that are, in different ways, already producing engineers with some of the attributes of the Engineer of 2020: Arizona State University, Harvey Mudd College, Howard University, MIT, the University of Michigan, and Virginia Tech. Brief presentations will identify educational and institutional practices and policies that appear to be especially effective in producing engineers with superior design, interdisciplinary, and contextual knowledge and skills. Presenters will also discuss linkages between effective curricula, instruction, and student experiences and supportive institutional cultures, practices, and policies.

Flagellar swimming is one of the swimming methods used by micro-organisms to advance in aquatic environment. The undulating motion of the flagella was successfully imitated to create propulsion for a medical swimming micro robot. The influence of a head section on the performance of such a robot is shown analytically. Swimming experiments demonstrate forward and backward swimming of a novel magnetically driven swimming tail. We intend to use the flagellar swimming tail in a three tail configuration for neurosurgical intervention in the ventricular system.

Broaching is one of the most recognized machining processes that can yield high productivity and high quality when applied properly. One big disadvantage of broaching is that all process parameters, except cutting speed, are built into the broaching tools. Therefore, it is not possible to modify the cutting conditions during the process once the tool is manufactured. Optimal design of broaching tools has a significant impact to increase the productivity and to obtain high quality products. In this paper, an optimization model for broaching design is presented. The model results in a non-linear non-convex optimization problem. Analysis of the model structure indicates that the model can be decomposed into smaller problems. The model is applied on a turbine disc broaching problem which is considered as one of the most complex broaching operations.

The most analyses of wire ropes are based on the well known classical treatise on elasticity by Love in 1944. A general theory of thin rods are included and investigated extensively. General equilibrium equations of a thin rod on arc length are derived and presented. The analytical and numerical solutions of wire ropes are based on the equilibrium equations as the starting point for the solutions in most of the papers. Helical rod model is first introduced by Phillips and Costello based on the equilibrium equations given by Love. General nonlinear equilibrium equation solution of the straight wire strand is given in this study and showed that it is harmonious with the results presented by Costello.

In this paper, the interest is the generalized synchronization in reduced-order for chaotic systems, i.e. the synchronization of the states of a slave system with a canonical projection of a different master system. A control approach, which involves an exact robust differentiator and a quasi-continuous high-order sliding mode-controller, is proposed for the above purpose. In this manner, the generalized synchronization in reduced-order is achieved in spite of mismatches between master and slave models. Results of the synchronization scheme performance are illustrated by means of simulations.
