Enhancing field-scale bioremediation of weathered petroleum oil-contaminated soil with biocompost as a bulking agent

The field-scale cleanup of weathered petroleum oil-contaminated soils from the Minas Oil Fields in Indonesia was investigated using landfarming bioremediation technology. Sawdust produced from palm fronds, trunks, and bushes was used as a bulking agent, fermented with manure from cow, goat, and chicken dung as amylolytic and cellulolytic source microflora. Petrophylic bacteria known for their capability to degrade PAH were used as augmented microflora along with stimulated local indigenous microflora overgrown onsite. The findings demonstrated that, albeit at varying rates, the inoculum of native and augmented microflora raised the total colony-forming units (CFU) and the rate at which total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) were degraded in all contaminated soils treated in the soil bioremediation facilities (SBF). After 150 days of bioremediation operation, the bioremediation process for petroleum oil-contaminated soil effectively eliminated 165.79 kg of TPH from 2565 cubic meters of contaminated soil, with a recovery cost of 161 USD per cubic of treated soil. The initial average TPH concentration in the soil was 64,799 ± 9373 mg/kg and decreased to a lower concentration of 163 ± 74 mg/kg after bioremediation was completed. Both native and augmented petrophilic microflora showed significant growth over tenfold, with an average number of colonies at the initial stage of the bioremediation process ranging from 5.9 × 10⁵ to 6.6 × 10⁶ CFU per gram of soil. We show that a practical and affordable bioremediation technique is the onsite production of petrophylic microflora (both native and augmented) and compost from locally available biomass waste. © 2024 The Authors

The past COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in the use of disposable masks, posing a significant environmental challenge due to the swift accumulation of waste. This study explores the potential of pyrolysis to transform this waste into valuable pyrolysis oil with characteristics akin to gasoline, addressing both waste management and energy derivation concerns. Pyrolysis, a thermal decomposition process, was applied to mask materials, producing an oil with a high calorific value of 45.93 MJ/kg. The chemical makeup of this pyrolytic oil was meticulously characterized using Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (PY-GC/MS) and Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), confirming the presence of hydrocarbons similar to those found in gasoline. Achieving an efficiency of 41.865 %, the pyrolytic approach demonstrated a promising potential for not only managing mask waste but also creating an alternative energy carrier. However, the study advises that before considering this pyrolytic oil for engine use, a thorough evaluation of its combustion quality, engine compatibility, and environmental impact is essential. This investigation advances the discussion on sustainable waste management, offering insights into the generation of alternative fuels from daily waste streams, while also highlighting the necessity for comprehensive analyses to ensure the practicality and efficiency of such novel energy solutions. © 2023 The Author(s)

This paper presented a learning model for product competitor analysis to first-year engineering students. Students were assigned to watch a video which contained an example before class. In a 45-minutes allotted class time, students were grouped, on-site or online, and assigned to complete an exercise on the product and direct competitor of their choice. The exercise focused on the 4Ps model for marketing implementation – product, price, place, and promotion – of the product and competitor and concluded with the strength, weakness, and unique value proposition of the product. The works were usually rough but acceptable. Students were generally satisfied and 86% found the exercise at least useful in the subsequent design thinking projects. In the future, the ChatGPT could be used to increase the working speed and, thus, reduced the most common complaint of insufficient time while increasing the work quality.

With the advancement of technology, systems in many different areas of application have become more complex, and obtaining reliable mathematical models is a task that is increasingly becoming more difficult as well. To overcome these issues, new methodologies have emerged, such as the one known as Data-Driven-Control (DDC), which uses the input and output data of the system to design a controller, and Behavior-Based-Control (BBC), which provides the controller based on the desired behavior of a system. In this work, these two methodologies were applied to obtain the transfer function of a Single-Input Single-Output mobile robotic platform that moves parallel to a wall. A Proportional Integral Derivative controller was used to control the left wheel, while the right wheel was set to a constant speed, allowing the mobile robot to maintain a constant distance from the wall. The controller was tuned utilizing root locus methodology with an overshot of 16.7%, settling time of 6.45 seconds, and a static error of 2.1%. Additionally, disturbances were added to test the robustness of the mobile robot model and the PID controller.

Climate change causes changes at the beginning of the rainy season and the dry season. In Microhydro planning, determining the rainy season's right start is very important to determine the energy potential. The beginning of the dry season is an excellent time to start carrying out structural work. This research was conducted in Kalijirak River, Mount Bromo Forest and Karanganyar Regency, a forest protected by the Indonesian government. The survey shows that the river flow is up to 1,458 m3/s in the dry season. This discharge is the potential to generate electrical energy. The construction must build in the dry season. This research aims to determine the beginning of the rainfall season to know the potential energy can generate and the beginning of the dry season to schedule the construction-analysis of seasonal changes based on rainfall intensity while analyzing energy potential based on dependable discharge. The rainfall-runoff simulation uses the Mock method to produce a dependable discharge. The results show that the beginning of the November rainy season period second means that the rainy season shifts back four periods, and the beginning of the dry season in May period 2 means the dry season shifts back four periods). This means, if the season moves late, the start of construction is also late. It late up to four Periode. Besides that, it also shows that the annual energy potential is 64,774,372 kWh. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

In recent years, hazardous gases emission from fossil fuels has attracted public concerns due to its worse effects on the ecosystem and living conditions not only mankind but also all creatures living on earth. That's why solar energy has a vital role in alternative energy resources. Solar energy sources will gain more importance in the future. As it is known, the most needed type of energy today is electrical energy. Thus, in this study, the necessary conditions for the photovoltaic (PV) systems used in solar energy production to operate at maximum performance and which parameters are required to control these conditions are examined. The results show that four parameters that we need to measure. These are: maximum operating current of a panel/cell (Impp), maximum operating voltage of a panel/cell (Vmpp), panel surface temperature and light intensity falling on the panel. Except for the panel surface temperature, the rest of the parameters can be measured directly. However, affecting the panel surface temperature;we must not ignore parameters such as ambient temperature, wind speed, humidity and light intensity. Therefore, while determining the panel surface temperature, these parameters should also be measured and a surface temperature should be determined accordingly. © 2022 IEEE.

The faculty of engineering, Jenderal Sudirman University, now referred to as the Unsoed engineering faculty, is one of the faculties at Jenderal Sudirman University. The Unsoed faculty of engineering has not implemented the ISO 21001:2018 quality assurance system and uses the 2020 SN Dikti standard. The implementation of ISO 21001:2018-based risk management at the General Sudirman University faculty of engineering is considered to be able to improve the operational performance of an organization. The increasing sources of risk from all aspects and the complexity of the risks that occur are the background for implementing risk identification. This study uses ISO 31000:2018 as a method for risk management. From the research that has been done, it is known that the SN Dikti 2020 still does not fulfill all the clauses of ISO 21001:2018. After identifying risks, there were 17 identified risks at the Unsoed engineering faculty. The Unsoed engineering faculty’s response to the identified risks is four avoided risks, six reduced risks, and seven accepted risks. Risk mitigation at the Unsoed engineering faculty is carried out for stakes, with risk responses being avoided and reduced.

This study proposes a new approach, a communal-based domestic rainwater harvesting (CDRWH) system, which is a new model that combines domestic and communal rainwater harvesting systems. This model is an alternative solution to improve system performance and utilize rainwater overflow from the system. Rainwater runoff from several domestic tanks is channeled to a communal tank to be collected, processed, and redistributed to needy domestic tanks. Overflow from the communal tank is used for groundwater recharge. The CDRWH system model aims to increase water supply, reduce runoff, and conserve groundwater. The model simulation uses daily water balance analysis and yield before spillage algorithm. The simulation scenario uses variations in roof area, number of house occupants, storage tank volume, and rainfall categories: 20 years, wet year, normal year, and dry year. Jagakarsa, an urban area in South Jakarta, was selected for the CDRWH system modeling. The results showed that the CDRWH model significantly improved the performance of the volumetric reliability (VR) and time reliability (TR) systems. In addition, the model could show a comparison of total groundwater recharge (GWR) and groundwater extraction (GWE), where the GWR capacity was higher. This allows centralized rainwater management in communal tanks, thereby reducing groundwater usage. The design of this model is simple. Therefore it can be easily duplicated for application in other locations. © 2025 The Authors

The palm oil industry plays a very important role in the Indonesian economy, as it contributes significantly to state revenue and employment. However, this industry also faces serious challenges related to its environmental impacts. Intensive crude palm oil (CPO) produces various forms of waste in large quantities, such as solid, gas, and liquid waste, which pollute the environment if not managed properly. One of the main wastes from the CPO industry is empty fruit bunches (EFB), which amount to around 23–28 % of the fresh fruit processed. This study aims to analyze the environmental impacts of palm oil mills using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach and evaluate the potential for improvements by utilizing EFB as base material for organic fertilizer and biochar as a soil amendment. The research was conducted at three palm oil mills in Indonesia. Data processing uses OpenLCA software version 2.3 combined with the Ecoinvent 3.9.1 database. The results of the study indicate that the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions comes from the use of synthetic fertilizers. The use of synthetic fertilizers can be reduced significantly by applying organic fertilizers and biochar produced from EFB. On average, the use of synthetic fertilizers per hectare can be reduced by using organic fertilizers or biochar by approximately 75.27 % and 34.85 % respectively. As a result, synthetic fertilizer input costs and the greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced. © 2025 The Authors

The aim of this paper is to evaluate, predict and analyze the plastic properties and formability of third-generation advanced high-strength steel (3genAHSS), with a specific focus on USS CR980XG3™️ AHSS as the reference material. Forming limit diagrams were determined, utilizing a range of experimental methods, including Nakajima tests, Erichsen tests, uniaxial tensile tests, and the Bulge test. A pivotal aspect is the application of an advanced sheet metal forming limit model based on Marciniak-Kuczynski analysis to simulate localized necking onset. Various constitutive equations, such as von Mises, Hill 48, and Yld2000-2d yield conditions, were used in simulation, alongside strain hardening laws like Swift and Voce. Comparative analyses were conducted to assess the accuracy of different models in predicting forming limits, with a particular emphasis on the influence of strain rate sensitivity. The study underscores the significant impact of the experimental method on forming limit values, highlighting that Yld2000-2d and the Swift hardening law with strain rate sensitivity provide optimal reproducibility of experimental data. Furthermore, the research emphasizes the necessity of considering strain rate sensitivity for accurate numerical simulations, stressing the effectiveness of the Marciniak-Kuczynski model when combined with proper constitutive equations in predicting forming limits for USS CR980XG3™️ AHSS. © 2024, The Authors.
