Digital Twins, sophisticated digital replicas of physical entities, have been gaining significant attention, especially after NASA's endorsement, and are poised to revolutionize numerous fields, such as medicine and construction. These advanced models offer dynamic, real-time simulations, leveraging enabling technologies, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, IoT, cloud computing, and Big Data analytics to enhance their functionality and applicability. In the medical field, Digital Twins facilitate personalized treatment plans and predictive maintenance of medical equipment by simulating human organs with precision. In construction, they enable efficient building design and urban planning, optimizing resource use, and reducing costs through predictive maintenance. Startups are innovatively employing Digital Twins in various sectors, from smart cities - where they optimize traffic flow, energy consumption, and waste management - to industrial machinery, ensuring predictive maintenance and minimizing downtime. This survey delves into the diverse use cases, market potential, and challenges of Digital Twins, such as data security and interoperability, while emphasizing their transformative impact on industries. The future prospects are promising, with continuous advancements in AI, ML, IoT, and cloud computing driving further expansion and application of Digital Twin technologies. © 2024 IEEE.

Enhanced YOLOv7 with three-dimensional attention and its application into underwater object detection

In recent years, with the increasing importance of marine resources, robots have been widely used in underwater environment exploration, seafood delivery and fishing. The visual perception system of the robot is equivalent to the "eyes" of the robot, which is an indispensable part of the robot to realize control and autonomous navigation. Object detection technology is an important part of the robot visual perception system, which determines the accuracy of the robot’s surrounding environment perception. YOLOv7 algorithm has the advantages of few parameters, fast detection speed and high accuracy. However, for underwater overlapping targets, YOLOv7 has the problems of missed detection and false detection and difficulty in separating target and background. Therefore, this paper proposes a new YOLO algorithm aiming at the missed detection problem of multiple overlapping targets. A three-dimensional attention convolution module is proposed to successfully identify multiple overlapping echinus and holothurian. Aiming at the difficulty of separating target and background, the upsampling process is redesigned to more fully retain the deep semantic information. Experiments were carried out on a dataset containing four kinds of underwater targets, and mAP was improved by 0.7% compared with YOLOv7. In order to verify the generalization performance of the model, a large number of ablation experiments have been carried out on other public datasets and the results on COCO and VOC show the superiority of the proposed model compared to other algorithms. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Numerical simulation and optimization of a circular open channel for fish farming using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

Open canals are one of the most common and cost-effective methods in water supply networks;they are widely used in different industries such as agriculture, water and sewage treatment, urban drainage, pisciculture and water parks. Due to global warming, the demand in clean energy to replace fossil fuels has caused using water turbines in riverbeds and aqueducts to be important. On this basis, optimizing key parameters such as flow motion and canal turbulence is crucial to reduce breakdowns while designing canals. In fact, the inappropriate adjustment of velocity and pressure within the canals may lead to the system failure: imbalance between inlet and outlet will increase the water level and the pressure on canal walls thus, leading to breakdown. In this paper, a circular open canal was designed for a pisciculture system. The velocity and height of the water canal is controlled by the canal inlet and outlet system and the water flows continuously inside the canal. By keeping the canal water volume constant in any time and the flow motion with constant velocity, the system makes the fishes feel infinite movement. Furthermore, the water particles and impurities (e.g., food and fish feces) are removed by the outlet from the canal bottom, transferred to the filtration system, and returned to the fish farm by the canal inlet after the filtration procedure;the mentioned technique causes the water canal to be kept at its optimal level. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been used to simulate the canal flow. Solving the Navier-Stokes equations numerically and assuming incompressible, unsteady, and two-phase flow, the parameters of the canal flow were extracted. Also, by mounting the system outlet along the path of water movement, greatly reduces the adverse effects of the outlet suction force on the canal main flow. The search for evidence of past life on Mars presents a tremendous challenge that requires the usage of very advanced robotic technologies to overcome it. Current digital microscopic imagers and spectrometers used for Astro biological examination suffer from limitations such as insufficient resolution, narrow detection range, and lack of portability. To overcome these challenges, this research study presents modifications to the Phoenix rover to expand its capability for detecting biosignatures on Mars. This paper examines the modifications implemented on the Phoenix rover to enhance its capability to detect a broader spectrum of biosignatures. One of the notable improvements comprises the integration of advanced digital microscopic imagers and spectrometers, enabling high-resolution examination of soil samples. Additionally, the mechanical components of the device have been reinforced to enhance maneuverability and optimize subsurface sampling capabilities. Empirical investigations have demonstrated that Phoenix has the capability to navigate diverse geological environments and procure samples for the purpose of biomolecular analysis. The biomolecular instrumentation and hybrid analytical methods showcased in this study demonstrate considerable potential for future astrobiology missions on Mars. The potential for enhancing the system lies in the possibility of broadening the range of detectable biomarkers and biosignatures. © 2023 IEEE.

Pipes are widely used in various industries but are subject to plastic deformation and corrosion, during which microcracks may appear. Ultrasonic guided wave mixing has gained attention due to its high sensitivity. This study employs phase inversion and two-dimensional Fourier transform to investigate the nonlinear interaction between counter-propagating guided waves and microcracks. The generated sum-frequency components and difference-frequency components contain multiple flexural modes and propagate toward both ends of the pipeline. The generated sum-frequency components and difference-frequency components are used to locate the microcracks. The circumferential location of the microcracks is determined by polar diagrams (i.e., the amplitudes of difference-frequency or sum-frequency components and angles), while the axial location is determined by the relationship between the amplitudes of difference-frequency components or sum-frequency components and distance. © 2024 IEEE.

The Equilibrium Optimiser(EO)has been demonstrated to be one of the metaheuristic algorithms that can effectively solve global optimisation *** the paradox between exploration and exploitation operations while enhancing the ability to jump out of the local optimum are two key points to be addressed in EO *** alleviate these limitations,an EO variant named adaptive elite-guided Equilibrium Optimiser(AEEO)is ***,the adaptive elite-guided search mechanism enhances the balance between exploration and *** modified mutualism phase reinforces the information interaction among particles and local optima *** cooperation of these two mechanisms boosts the overall performance of the basic *** AEEO is subjected to competitive experiments with state-of-the-art algorithms and modified algorithms on 23 classical benchmark functions and IEE CEC 2017 function test *** results demonstrate that AEEO outperforms several well-performing EO variants,DE variants,PSO variants,SSA variants,and GWO variants in terms of convergence speed and *** addition,the AEEO algorithm is used for the edge server(ES)placement problem in mobile edge computing(MEC)*** experimental results show that the author’s approach outperforms the representative approaches compared in terms of access latency and deployment cost.

Electric Vehicles (EV's) are now playing crucial role in economical development of any country and adapted as a novel mode of transportation over the conventional Internal Combustion (IC) engines. With advancement of technology distinct types of batteries and their applications for energy storage and main source of energy for EV are discussed by many researchers. State-of-the-art technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT), Big data analytics technology are reviewed for the possible application to improve the performance of Lithiumion batteries. This paper presents application of Adaptive weighted multi-sensor data fusion algorithm for recording the voltage levels of individual cells of lithium-ion batteries along with interior temperature measurement of lithium-ion power pack, integrated with IoT technology. The lithium-ion battery power pack of 48V is developed in the laboratory and Wireless communication based on 4G IoT is interface with android phone that displays the current State of Charge (SoC), State of Health (SoH) energy balance of battery pack. The voltage of individual cells connected in series is recorded on BMS using CAN protocol along with the interior temperature of Lithiumion power pack. © 2025 IEEE.
