In order to study the solid-liquid mixing performance of a multi-layer continuous stirred tank, a finite element simulation model of the continuous stirred tank was constructed by using Solidworks software. The transient flow field analysis of the continuous stirred tank was completed by using STARCCM+ software. On this basis, the influence of stirred paddle blade speed, stirred paddle blade diameter, stirred paddle blade inclination angle, and lower paddle mounting height on the stirred tank solid-liquid mixing performance is studied. Using the orthogonal experiment method and selecting L9(34) orthogonal table to get 9 groups of programs, through the extreme variance analysis, the optimal combination of programs is determined. The experimental results show that considering the integrated slurry concentration distribution and equipment energy consumption, the optimal combination of parameters is a stirred paddle blade speed of 1400 rpm, a stirred paddle blade inclination angle of 45°, a stirred paddle blade diameter of 120 mm, and a lower paddle mounting height of 90 mm. The study's results on improving the stirred tank paddle parameters serve as a valuable reference point for future research. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Convergent-divergent (C-D) nozzles are widely used in the aerospace industry to produce thrust at the exit by increasing the velocity and converting the subsonic flow of gases at the inlet into supersonic flow at the outlet. For enhanced flow characteristics, the design of C-D nozzles must be optimized. In this study, the design parameters of the C-D nozzle of a high-speed rocket i.e. throat diameter, convergent angle, and divergent angle are optimized using the Taguchi method. Design of Experiments (DOE)is performed based on Taguchi’s L9 orthogonal array by altering the above-mentioned design parameters at three levels. Based on DOE, the nozzles are designed using SolidWorks, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis is performed on ANSYS. The response flow characteristics i.e. exit Mach number, exit velocity, and exit pressure (calculated through simulations) are analyzed using the Taguchi method to find the optimized set of parameters. The results depict that shock waves appear in some of the nozzle models from DOE. Other nozzles without shock waves provide perfect supersonic flow at the outlet of the rocket nozzle by increasing the velocity and reducing the pressure. The maximum Mach number at the outlet of the C-D nozzle for the given DOE is 3.45 for the given design, a smaller throat diameter provides better results. Based on Taguchi’s S/N ratio analysis, the optimized set of design parameters that can give a high Mach number at the outlet, high velocity at the outlet, and low pressure at the outlet, is 0.304 m throat diameter, 28o convergent angle and 20o divergent angle. © 2025 Jordan Journal of mechanical and Industrial engineering. To study the penetration behavior and ballistic characteristics of a Φ30mm tungsten alloy armor-piercing projectile penetrating homogeneous armor steel, penetration tests were conducted, and the penetration process was numerically simulated using LS-DYNA. The experimental results show that the presence of the conical section of the Φ30mm armor-piercing projectile forms a "saddle" shaped crater feature. The simulation results indicate that the penetration efficiency of the projectile and the incident velocity exhibit a quadratic function relationship. In the velocity range of 800-1200m/s, the kinetic energy consumed by the projectile for the same penetration depth is essentially the same, i.e., the lateral crater diameter is consistent at different speeds. Additionally, during the penetration process, the penetration depth as a function of time under different speeds also shows a quadratic relationship. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing. There are many factors affecting the damping properties of magnesium alloys. The damping capacities and microstructure of Mg-6Zn-1.5Cd-0.5Zr(abbr. MC) alloy were investigated on three different treatment states such as cast alloy, solid solution alloy and extruded alloy. The result of research shows that the average grain size of MC alloy as cast, as solution and as extrusion is 80μm, 40μm and 4-20μm, respectively. Throughout the test strain range, the strain damping capacities of MC alloy as cast is lower than that of Mg-6Zn-0.5Zr (abbr. M)alloy as cast. The length between weak pinning points on the dislocation line is reduced by Cd elements solution in the a-Mg matrix. The strain independent damping capacities (Ql-1) of MC alloy as cast equal to about 0.00108, as well as solid solution alloy and extruded alloy almost. When the strain amplitude (Ε) exceeds the first critical de-pinning strain amplitude (Ε1cr), the strain-dependent damping value (QH-1) of the solid solution and extruded alloys are greater than that of the cast alloy. When strains Ε > 4.18×10−4, QH-1of solid solution alloy and extruded alloy reach above 0.01025 and 0.01057, respectively. In the test range, the damping capacity QH-1of MC alloy in casting state, solid solution state and extrusion state reaches the maximum value, which are 0.01201, 0.01406 and 0.01491, respectively. The damping mechanism of MC alloy accords with Granato and Lücke (G-L) theory. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

In this work, the mechanical properties of six different composite materials are examined. These materials are made by mixing glass, carbon, and jute fibres with different amounts of eggshell powder and bind them together using epoxy resin (LY-556). To evaluate the composites’ tensile, compressive, and impact strengths, various fibre sequences and eggshell powder concentrations were used in their preparation. The strengths of the materials were assessed using a methodical experimental methodology, demonstrating the impact of eggshell powder content and fibre composition on the overall performance of the composites. The results show subtle differences in strength properties between the various composite compositions. The findings provide insight into the viability of these materials for particular structural engineering and manufacturing applications. This study adds to our understanding of composite behaviour and offers guidance for selecting and designing materials that will maximise their effectiveness in a variety of industrial settings. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

In aerospace applications, avoiding chatter is an efficient way to improve the machining quality of weakly stiff parts. However, it is not easy to establish an accurate chatter stability model for variable curvature thin-walled workpieces under time-varying machining conditions due to their complex dynamic characteristics. For this issue, the paper proposed a chatter prediction model to effectively predict the chatter of variable curvature thin-walled workpieces considering material removal, cutter position, deformation along the cutter radius and axis, and other time-varying machining characteristics. Finite element simulation and milling tests to analyse the correctness in the proposed model. The proposed method contributed to chatter-free machining parameter planning to ensure machining stability. © The Author(s) 2025.

Numerical investigation of heat transfer performance of microchannel with wall-mounted obstacles using hybrid nanofluids

In the present study, the thermal performance of a microchannel with rectangular-, triangular- and circular-shaped wall-mounted blocks on the top and bottom walls is studied numerically using hybrid nanofluids (Cu+Al/water, Cu+Al2O3/water, Ag+CuO/water and Ag+Al2O3/water) and ionic nanofluid (Al2O3/[C4mim] [NTf2]). A constant Reynolds number equal to 10, volume fraction for first and second nanoparticle as 0.1 and 0.05, respectively, wall temperature of 27°C and coolant inlet temperature of 20°C are considered. The microchannel with a triangular block showed maximum heat transfer performance. The Nusselt number of the microchannel with triangular blocks and nozzle at the inlet was enhanced by 145.76%. The maximum Nusselt number has been found for (Ag+Al2O3)/water hybrid nanofluid, which is 13.8, 30, 37.12 and 640% greater compared to (Ag+CuO)/water, (Cu+ Al2O3)/water, (Cu+ Al)/water and base fluid, respectively. The microchannel with the ionic nanofluid is enhanced by 208 % compared to that with water. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Laser cutting is a versatile, non-contact manufacturing process that employs a laser beam to process materials without direct contact. This makes it ideal for delicate and thin fabrics like Assamese silk. This paper presents the feasibility of laser cutting for Assamese white pat silk fabric of 0.2 mm thickness. The primary objective of executing the research work is to examine the interaction of laser with the white pat silk fabric as still limited data is available in the literature. The experiments were conducted using a 90 W CO2 laser machine and varying two process parameters: laser power and scanning speed. The results showed that laser power of 10 W resulted in better dimensional accuracy and edge quality due to the reduced heat energy of the laser. Laser power higher than 10 W increases the amount of heat energy transferred to the fabric, thereby resulting in a higher burning effect reducing the accuracy and edge quality. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Aiming to meet the high reliability requirements of fiber optic sensor line layout in aero engine measurements under high temperature and high speed conditions, a method for fiber metallization protection and installation is proposed. A finite element model was established for the welding process of a metallized protective structure, and the thermal-electricforce coupling method was used to simulate the evolution of the temperature field. The research shows that by applying pulse current, the inner temperature of the tube gradually exceeds the outer temperature. Therefore, in order to protect the internal fiber, it is necessary to increase the intensity of the pulse current as much as possible and shorten the duration of the pulse current. © 2024 SPIE.

When Wireless Power Transfer is applied in underground coal mines, the metal explosion-proof shell of mining electrical equipment will produce eddy current, which significantly reduces transmission efficiency. In this paper, a Wireless Power Transfer model applied to mining electrical equipment with low-eddy current is proposed by using laser technology to cut the joints on the metal explosion-proof shell and rationally place the magnetic focusing material. The proposed shell cut by laser technology has less eddy current and can regulate the flux well. It helps to avoid the constraints of the explosion-proof metal shell on the near-field resonance and inductive coupling, and makes the power supply of the equipment under the mine more convenient and safe. © 2024 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.
