In this paper, we report the findings from an experimental investigation aimed at assessing the potential for reducing pumping power penalty in channels partially filled with metal foams while maintaining thermal performance. The thermal-hydraulic performance parameter J/F1/3, where J is the Colburn-J factor and F is the friction factor was used to compare the relative performance of foams at various values of blockage fractions (B), where B is defined as the ratio of the height of the foam to the height of the channel. The metal foam samples considered were 10 PPI 6101-T6 Aluminum, with porosity of ~94-96%, and B of 1/6, 1/3, 2/3, 5/6, and 1. The Reynolds number (based on the channel hydraulic diameter and inlet velocity) was varied from 1,000 to 15,000. A modification was made to all configurations with B © 2024, The Authors. This study synthesizes three sequential steps: pretreatment, acid hydrolysis, and enzyme hydrolysis for bioethanol and hydrochar production from macroalga Gracilaria. The Taguchi method is employed separately in each step to optimize relevant operating factors, aiming to maximize the monosaccharide yield. During pretreatment, environmentally friendly alkaline ionized water is utilized as it does not contain chemical additives. Afterward, microwave-assisted hydrolysis is adopted to enhance the monosaccharide yield of the macroalga for bioenergy production. The results show that the total sugar of Gracilaria undergoing acid hydrolysis alone is 28.72 g‧L−1. The total sugar content after alkaline pretreatment followed by acid hydrolysis is 32.64 g‧L−1, and it increases to 34.76 g‧L−1 after adding enzymes. Meanwhile, the higher heating value of Gracilaria increases from 10.884 MJ‧kg−1 to 12.620 MJ‧kg−1 after undergoing alkaline pretreatment. After the acid and enzyme hydrolysis processes, it increases to 15.164 MJ‧kg−1. The solid biofuel's calorific value increases by 39 % from the three-stage processes. The liquid product combined with Saccharomyces cerevisiae can produce bioethanol, while the produced hydrochar can be used as a solid fuel. This research promotes the development of macroalgal biomass for energy and environmental applications, thereby advancing the circular bioeconomy. © 2024 The Institution of Chemical Engineers

Distribution transformers (DTs) deliver a core role in electrical power distribution systems. It is mandatory to carry out timely inspection and maintenance of DTs, to achieve the anticipated reliability in power distribution systems. Risk-based inspection and maintenance analysis (RBI&MA) enable the optimum usage of available resources, to ensure the reliability and availability of power distribution systems. It is necessary to carry out risk-based screening of DTs to classify them, in order to perform detailed RBI&MA. This manuscript demonstrates the use of a supervised machine learning approach for the risk screening of DTs to classify them into low, medium, and high-risk groups. The suggested approach enables inspection and maintenance engineers and asset managers to recognize those DTs that qualify for detailed risk analysis. To illustrate the suggested approach, a risk screening is performed, using 40 units of DTs in a power distribution network located in a highly dense area. The approach developed in this study enables asset management capabilities in electric power distribution systems to be enhanced, by replicating a similar approach in other key components in power distribution systems. © 2022 IEEE.

Waste management start-ups require collaboration for developing circular business models to reduce the dependencies of landfills in Indonesia. This manuscript aims to describe the role of collaboration within the development of a circular economy business model. Data were collected from Instagram and the included start-ups' websites from 2 March to 11 August 2021 and analyzed using the soft system methodology framework. Based on the analysis results, this study developed a rich presentation of the collaborative relationships that the start-ups engaged in. The underlying challenges of implementing a circular business model were identified, and the findings showed that start-ups collaborated to expand their service areas and the variety of waste types that could be managed. This collaboration involved start-ups working with the government, other companies not engaged in the solid waste sector, and other start-up businesses. Collaboration between start-ups and the government for providing waste collection and treatment facilities is vital for implementing such a circular business model. This study also presents several recommendations for the government, waste management start-ups, and other industries concerning the promotion of a circular business model. © 2022 IEEE.

Inverse Hall-Petch effect in nanocrystalline ice predicted by machine-learned coarse-grained molecular simulations

We study the grain-size effect on mechanical behaviors of polycrystalline ice at nanoscale through large-scale molecular dynamics simulations, enabled by an accurate and efficient machine-learned coarse-grained water model [H. Chan, M. J. Cherukara, B. Narayanan, T. D. Loeffler, C. Benmore, S. K. Gray and S. K. Sankaranarayanan. Machine learning coarse grained models for water. Nature Communications 10(1), p. 379, 2019]. Polycrystalline ice systems with different grain sizes in the range of 5∼30 nm are systematically investigated through uniaxial tensile tests. Simulation results reveal that Young's modulus and yield strength increase as the grain size increases, leading to an inverse Hall-Petch effect in nanocrystalline ice. Such an observation is significantly different from the conventional Hall-Petch effect in polycrystalline ice observed by experiments at millimeter scale. The deformation behavior suggests that grain boundaries (GBs), rather than grain interiors, play the active role in accommodating external loading in nanocrystalline ice. Further void analysis of nanocrystalline ice during deformation reveals that nanocrack initiates and propagates along GBs and eventually leads to failure of systems with larger grain sizes (≥20nm), yielding a sudden drop in the stress-strain curve. While for systems with smaller grain sizes (≤15nm), only extensive plastic deformation is presented without significant void growth. Our simulation results demonstrate that the GB sliding is the governing mechanism for the inverse Hall-Petch effect observed in nanocrystalline ice. © 2023 World Scientific Publishing Company.

The present paper introduces a novel technology aimed at improving the retention rate of nonwoven filter barriers produced using the wet method with short, waste wool fibers and dusts. These filter barriers are specifically designed to treat oil-contaminated wastewater. The study demonstrates that exposing the filter barriers to ultraviolet (UV) radiation with a wavelength of 254 nanometers on one or both sides increases their efficiency. The findings indicate that a treatment time of between 2 and 3 minutes with single-sided UV irradiation is sufficient for the wool-based filter barrier. Additionally, the research suggests that using a three-layer filter structure can enhance the filter barrier's efficiency to 1.26 g/g fibers (0.196 for a single-layer filter structure). The study recommends the implementation of an environmentally friendly and cost-effective process for producing efficient filter barriers from textile waste for water purification purposes. This process involves using UVC irradiation, which is simple to implement and has low associated costs. © 2024 IEEE.

Magnetization dynamics in nano- and micro-scale magnetic materials and devices is governed by the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation. This equation links magnetization dynamics to torques arising from various physical interactions, including electromagnetic effects influenced by magnetic field time variations. At low frequencies, these effects are approximated by magnetostatics, but at higher frequencies and device sizes, electrodynamic effects, such as eddy currents, become significant. Dynamic magnetic fields are determined using dynamic Maxwell's equations. Methods to solve Maxwell's equations for eddy current issues include Finite Element Method (FEM) and integral equation-based techniques. Challenges in developing efficient solvers involve computational domain truncation, efficient time stepping, and coupling Maxwell's with LLG equations.

In the context of engineering education, imparting control theory poses a significant challenge, especially for students lacking prior knowledge in the domain. This paper addresses this issue by introducing a novel approach for teaching control theory using STEM (science, Technology, engineering, and Mathematics) education, mobile robot simulator, and bio-inspired optimization. The paper identifies the lack of prior knowledge in control theory as a barrier to effective instruction and proposes a work approach that combines theoretical discussions, hands-on practical exercises, and tests, allowing students to progressively delve into control theory concepts. The study’s results demonstrate a statistical significance positive correlation between students’ performance in practical exercises and test outcomes. By providing a comprehensive framework for teaching control theory in a practical and engaging manner, this research contributes to bridging the gap in control theory education for students from diverse backgrounds.

Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), which is suitable for use in the human body owing to its biocompatibility, is commonly used in medical applications such as bone nails, bone cement, and dentures. However, owing to its hard and brittle nature, PMMA can cause damage when it is subjected to excessive stress and can also cause severe wear. In this study, three different sizes of silica particles were used as reinforcing additives to enhance the wear resistance of PMMA composites. A pin-on-disk wear test was conducted to record the coefficient of friction and wear volume, and the wear volume was measured using a 3D laser scanning microscope. In the wear test, the transfer film of micron and submicron particles produced a plowing effect, resulting in wide grooved wear scars and a higher wear rate than the raw material. The nanoparticle transfer film reduced direct material wear, the wear scars were fine and flat, and the wear rate was decreased, reducing the wear of SiO2-reinforced PMMA composites by 40%. The experimental results revealed that the wear volume is proportional to the wear time. In addition, the observed area of the transfer film on the wear counterpart can be used as a service life sensor of the coating material. © MYU K.K.
