The mechanical engineering technology program at Rochester Institute of technology (RIT) has implemented an alternative to the capstone project technique commonly used to satisfy the ABET Criterion 5 Curriculum section d. (Capstone or other integrating experiences must draw together diverse elements of the curriculum and develop student competence in focusing both technical and non-technical skills in solving problems.)1 A majority of engineering technology and engineering Science programs rely upon a capstone project for providing an integrating experience which, by their very nature, are burdensome to the program resources and invariably suffer many disadvantages in their operation. Due to the size and complexity of capstone projects, the objective in the mechanical engineering technology (MET) program at RIT has been to provide an alternative to the current capstone technique that will provide a superior integrating experience through a series of connected experiential projects integrated into the core classes. This paper will present a method, based on a scheme for experiential learning and innovation,that is a viable and robust alternative to the capstone technique which is easier to implement, will reduce the burden to the program, and provides a more complete integrating experience to the student while strengthening the MET program here at RIT. © American Society for engineering Education, 2010.

ULTRASONIC LAMB WAVE TOMOGRAPHY OF NON‐UNIFORM INTERFACIAL STIFFNESS BETWEEN CONTACTING SOLID BODIES

In this work, the interfacial condition between two contacting solid bodies is determined using an ultrasonic Lamb wave tomography. An ultrasonic measurement setup based on parallel projection tomography that uses broadband transducers is presented. Time‐frequency representation (TFR) is employed to improve identification of the arrival time and frequency contents of the transmitted wave modes. Experiments are carried out on an aluminum plate where the flat end of a solid aluminum bar is pressed perpendicular to the surface; then, the level and distribution of the interfacial stiffness is controlled by applied force on the bar. The tomographic reconstructions are performed during repeated loading cycles. Finally, reconstructed tomographic images of the contact area versus applied pressure are obtained. The method presented has potential applications in determining the loss of contact in mechanically joined structural components.

The role of dissipation on wave shape and attenuation in dry and saturated granular chains is considered experimentally and numerically. The wave dynamics in these chains includes a dissipative term based on Stoke’s drag and on a new mechanism of liquid expulsion from the developing elastic contact. The latter mechanism will be shown to be necessary for comparisons of experimental and numerical results. The dissipation of energy in the region of particle contact may serve as a model for hot-spot formation in granular materials undergoing high strain-rate deformation. The shock wave profiles in granular chains, including viscous dissipation, were analytically obtained with the long wave approximation. The critical viscosity, which describes the transition from and oscillatory to a monotonous wave profile is validated using a comparison of the analytical and discrete numerical models, which agree well with one another.

Strongly nonlinear periodic waves are investigated in an initially compressed chain of spheres under Hertz contact. A harmonic excitation force disturbs the first grain with an amplitude comparable to the initial compression and the steady strain-wave profiles at large distances from this disturbance are compared with predictions from the long wave approximation. Two qualitatively different types of quasi-stationary periodic waves are apparent in the system: one with minimum and maximum strain values above the static value and one whose minimum strain is below and maximum value is above the initial strain. From the frequency spectrums of the calculated force between particles, new forcing functions are constructed that allow rapid formation of quasi-stationary strongly nonlinear periodic waves.

This research is about the analysis and design of variable-wheelbase bike. Aiming to the existing folding bike of all kinds, we collect patent communiqué and record information to classify the documents and give analysis of its merit and defect. We find the way of innovative design from the generalizing information. Finally, we choose multiple-linkage mechanism system to change the positions of seat, handle bar and rear wheel, which can also alter the riding position and control ability of user. In order to lower the cost, we reduce the numbers of linkages. This linkages system must be one freedom . Therefore, this research is proceeding the mechanical sustainable synthesizing with this design iuput, and develops a multiple-linkages mechanism system with 8 bares, 10 joints with one freedom to be the construction of bike frame. Then, we synthesizing the dimensions of bike frame by SolidWorks,and stimulating sporting motion and interference by the 3D CAD model, later, evaluate whether the 3D dummy meets the requirements or not. It will also make the CAE to proceed the stress analysis of the bike frame construction with ANSYS11. 0 to make sure the strength and security. Finally, may be we would make a prototype.

We analyze a finite horizon, single-product, periodic review model in which pricing and inventory decisions should be made simultaneously at the beginning of each period. Besids the traditional cost such as order cost, inventory cost, there IS a new introduced cost called the reimbursement cost. Customers are ensured to be reimbursed the difference between the current purchase price and any lower price within a fixed future time limit. The price has a direct impact on the distribution of the demand and the expected demand is a non-increase function of the price. The model is formulated as a discrete-time optimal control problem. Its objective is to maximize expected revenue over the planning horizon. The existence of its optimal solution has been proved based on the (s, S, p) policy. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper describes a low-cost, successful program to help retain female engineering technology students with the ultimate goal of increasing the number of female graduates of our engineering technology programs. This program was started in 2003. The programming initially focused on academic support in the form of tutoring, formation of study groups and reimbursement for academic laboratory kits. This program did improve retention, but a survey of our students found that they also desired social support and opportunities to serve the community. Since the addition of programming involving social support and community building, retention of women students in the engineering technology programs has improved by an average of 6% per year. In addition to improved retention, the number of students receiving a D, F or Withdrawing from the core first- and second-year courses in these programs has dropped by over 75%. © American Society for engineering Education, 2009.

Biology has played a key role in influencing the development and optimization of a significant variety of sensors that provide engineers new ideas for improvements to current technology, new sensor technology, and potential sensor miniaturization. Biological systems, such as plants and insects offer significant methods of flight, imaging, sensing, adaptation to environment, and locomotion. The biological domain provides inspiration at many levels, such as cellular, organism, and species. A biological system is any biological organism, organism subsystem, or portion of an organism that is observed to exist. Abstraction of the biological system using analogical reasoning allows an engineering designer to look for a specific solution through mimicry in an approach to biology-inspired design. The analogous approach relies on the idea of figuring out the basis of overall biological system and of each part or subsystem that achieves the overall goal.

The article focuses on the long-term stability of thermal interface material (TIM). It states that an accelerated reliability test method was used to evaluate the long-term stability of TIM in order to provide sufficient thermal conductance in extended or extensive use condition. It tells that the degradation in TIM performance depends on the time of usage, material properties, and operation temperature. It also notes that a gel-type TIM was adopted to conduct an example of stability experiment while failure mechanism and material analysis were presented to reveal the various reliability stresses.

THICKNESS DETERMINATION OF A PLATE WITH VARYING THICKNESS USING AN ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK FOR TIME‐FREQUENCY REPRESENTATION OF LAMB WAVES

Thickness estimation of a varying‐thickness media is carried out using an algorithm acting as an artificial neural network for time‐frequency representation (TFR) of Lamb waves. Dispersion curves are reconstructed using a self adjustable network multi‐input fuzzy rules emulated network (MIFREN). The uncertainty in the time‐frequency determination is compared with a typical spectrogram technique. The proposed algorithm is computationally less complex than others used in the past. Experimental results were obtained by exciting Lamb waves on an aluminum plate with varying thickness; these were compared with numerical estimations.
