Unlike birds, insect type flapping wing mechanism does not have tail wings. Therefore, its fuselage attitude is adjusted by either varying direction of the stroke plane or twisting the trailing edge. In this paper, design and simulation of a control mechanism are to be presented. The control mechanism produces 3-axis moments by trailing edge control (TEC). TEC generates control moments by twisting a rod connected to the root of the main wings. For proper operation of TEC, kinematic analysis is conducted to determine its appropriate linkage length and the location of the mounted components. In addition, free play phenomenon caused by the backlash, which causes degradation in control ability, is also considered. Also, the wing shaft displacement caused by the free play is considerably decreased. To observe the control moments caused by the TEC, simulation is conducted by DYMORE software. The physical and aerodynamic phenomena caused by TEC are observed. Therefore, the prototype of the current mechanism is fabricated based on the analysis results. In the future, experiments for the proposed control mechanism will be conducted. Then, the control moment generated by the prototype will be evaluated and physical phenomena caused by the control moment will be observed. Modeling complex systems plays a significant role in decision supports for stochastic processes such as the transportation system. Furthermore, the transportation system in an urban university setting poses additional challenges due to the dynamic nature of the user groups (mainly students) as many factors including the living arrangements and class schedules of the students influence the demands for on-campus transportation. In this research initiative, a university shuttle system was simulated using discrete event simulation modeling to understand the systems dynamics, identify system bottlenecks, and recommend improvement strategies. Specifically, the passenger waiting times as well as the shuttle bus utilization were analyzed at each bus stop. After modeling and validating the current transportation system scenario, a hypothetical scenario of diverting buses from one route to another was investigated and quantitative comparison was made.

This research initiative focuses on modeling and optimizing an urban university parking system. Different from regular parking systems, urban university parking systems face additional challenges due to the limited space, the complexity of the parking facility distribution, the dynamic nature of the traffic flows, and the randomness of the parking access times, primarily driven by class schedules. A comprehensive discrete event simulation model was developed to capture parking system dynamics for an urban university in Akron-Ohio. Specifically, a model consisting of 7 parking decks, 44 surface lots, and 8 residence halls was created to take into account the different user groups, their arrival and departure patterns, and parking location preferences. After validating the baseline model, an interactive campus map was developed to show the best places to park throughout the day based on the windows of arrival times on campus. This map can be updated each academic semester based on the arrival rate data for parking location recommendations.

A study was conducted to develop a methodology to perform finite element (FE)-based simulations of the micromechanical response on actual three-dimensional (3D) microstructures. It was demonstrated that the methodology was applicable to other 3D image acquisition techniques, such as X-ray computed tomography. The simplifications performed in image manipulation and voxelization retained the major features of the pores, including their high angular morphology and orientation. A parallelepipedic volume of about 20 &19 &15 mm3 size and average porosity of about 0.05 were extracted from a car engine block made of an aluminum cast alloy to conduct the investigations. The 3D pore morphology was reconstructed from the stack of 3900 serial sections. The simulations were performed on 12 cubic subdomains of the parallelepipedic volume having the size of 3.31&1.77&2.98 mm3 where the porosity volume fraction varied from about 0.022% up to 25%.

Manual palpation is commonly used to localize tumors and other features buried deep inside organs during open surgery. This approach is not feasible in minimally invasive or robotic surgery, as the contact with the tissue is mediated by instruments. To address this problem, we propose a soft robotic skin (SRS) that can be deployed from a small incision and create a stiffness map in a single step. Such a skin is composed of a matrix of soft robotic tactile elements (SRTEs), each one able to expand and record the tissue response during expansion. In this paper, we firstly prove the feasibility of palpation using a single SRTE. Then, we present and test a soft-suction based anchoring mechanism able to keep the SRS in the desired position in contact with the tissue, allowing surgeons to palpate different sides of the organ. Finally, we detail a calibration method for the SRTE, and assess the feasibility of identifying lumps buried inside a soft tissue phantom, and then inside a chicken liver during an ex-vivo trial. Experimental results show that the SRTE was able to differentiate simulated lumps (up to 3.25 mm deep) from healthy tissue in both the phantom and the ex-vivo trials. These results, added to the ability of the suction gripper to compensate for the expansion forces of each SRTE, are paving the way for soft robotic autonomous tools that can be used for intraoperative mapping of tissue cancers. © 2017 IEEE.

In recent years popularity of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems has been increased rapidly. There have been various research projects on the robotics and control community on these systems. In this work, a general UAV platform that can be used for education as well as research has been proposed. This system has embedded computers and various sensors such as IMU, camera, LIDAR sensor to implement various control algorithms. To emphasize the usefulness of the system, an embedded visual tracking algorithm has been developed and presented. In experiments, the quadrotor UAV could be able to successfully track the marker under Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control, with the help of the on-board vision computer. © 2017 ACM.

This research has applied an integrated design and development of planning information system, which is been designed using Enterprise Architecture Planning. Frequent discrepancy between planning and realization of the budget that has been made, resulted in ineffective planning, is one of the reason for doing this research. The design using EAP aims to keep development aligned and in line with the strategic direction of the organization. In the practice, EAP is carried out in several stages of the planning initiation, identification and definition of business functions, proceeded with architectural design and EA implementation plan that has been built. In addition to the design of the Enterprise Architecture, this research carried out the implementation, and was tested by several methods of black box and white box. Black box testing method is used to test the fundamental aspects of the software, tested by two kinds of testing, first is using User Acceptance Testing and the second is using software functionality testing. White box testing method is used to test the effectiveness of the code in the software, tested using unit testing. Tests conducted using white box and black box on the integrated planning information system, is declared successful. Success in the software testing can not be ascertained if the software built has not shown any distinction from prior circumstance to the development of this integrated planning information system. For ensuring the success of this system implementation, the authors test consistency between the planning of data and the realization of prior-use of the information system, until after-use information system. This consistency test is done by reducing the time data of the planning and realization time. From the tabulated data, the planning information system that has been built reduces the difference between the planning time and the realization time, in which indicates that the planning information system can motivate the plann

Screw rotors of a twin screw compressor often deform and interfere due to the cyclic gas pressure and working temperature, which lead to noise, vibration and abrasion of the screw rotors. Therefore, this paper proposed a simplified CAE (Computer Aided engineering) method instead of the past massive and complex CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) method to simulate and estimate reasonably the screw rotor load and deformation with considering the gas pressure and working temperature applied on its operating process. The analysis results could provide the possible maximum rotor deformation and cyclic load acting on the rotors for design consideration.

There is an emerging need of intelligent vehicles on indoor environments such as university campuses, airports or shopping malls. These intelligent vehicles can help elderly, disabled, or people with heavy luggage. This paper describes an intelligent vehicle that can be used indoor as well as outdoor areas for this purpose. Finding the exact location for indoor robots is not an easy task, since Global Positioning system (GPS) is not available indoors. In this work onboard sensors such as motor encoder and steering-wheel encoder were used to obtain localization estimates. The errors are determined to be low even when the vehicle travels long distances. © 2017 ACM.

Energy consumption of buildings worldwide has steadily increased over the past couple of decades. Furthermore, energy performance of buildings is one of the factors that contribute to energy waste and its perennial adverse impact on the environment. This paper presents a data mining approach for assessing the heating and cooling requirements of residential buildings. The proposed approach combines Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and cluster analysis to assess and predict the heating and cooling energy efficiency of residential buildings. The ANN-based model uses eight input variables (i.e., relative compactness, surface area, wall area, roof area, overall height, orientation, glazing area, and glazing area distribution) to predict both the heating and cooling loads of residential buildings. Buildings are then clustered based on the output variables using the K-means clustering method. The proposed approach is used to assess and evaluate 768 diverse residential buildings based on simulated literature data. The research results showed that the proposed approach can effectively predict the heating and cooling requirements of residential buildings based on the input variables considered with a very high level of accuracy.
