The European external platform "Bartolomeo" is an enhancement of the European International Space Station (ISS) module "Columbus". Its infrastructure is motivated by the shortage in availability of ISS external sites and the need to improve capabilities to keep the station attractive for new upcoming space missions. Designed to user requirements from the commercial and institutional sector, Bartolomeo is a new ext ernal payload hosting facility which is mechanically attached to the ram-facing primary and secondary trunnions on the ram side of Columbus. Thermal and dynamic stability of the payloads are the primary missions of Bartolomeo environment. Micro -g disturbances control is vital for the operation of the payloads outside the International Space Station. Therefore Bartolomeo is designed to provide a smooth dynamic environment towards on -orbit random vibration levels from low to high frequency. For each payload an isolation device will be developed by Airbus Defence and Space in Bremen in order to provide a guaranteed payload comfort. In order to determine the efficiency of insulation a preliminary analysis is necessary to investigate the sensitivity of payloads with respect to their position, mass, Center of Gravity (CoG) towards frequency range. The insulation device shall reduce the resonance of the amplification for certain frequencies without shifting the effect to other frequency ranges. The possible mode cou pling of Bartolomeo payloads and the platform itself to the Columbus Module is also investigated in this paper. The effect of soft - mounted attachments between Bartolomeo and Columbus is included in this investigation. A modal survey test and random vibration tests will be used for the external correlation of the mathematical model of Bartolomeo and in addition they will support this analysis. The prevalence of sleep disorders in the aging population and the importance of sleep quality for health have emphasized the need for accurate and accessible sleep monitoring solutions. Polysomnography (PSG) remains the clinical gold standard for diagnosing sleep disorders;however, its discomfort and inconvenience limit its accessibility. To address these issues, a wearable device (WD) integrated with stretchable transparent electrodes (STEs) is developed in this study for multisignal sleep monitoring and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven sleep staging. Utilizing conductive and flexible STEs, the WD records multiple biological signals (electroencephalogram [EEG], electrooculogram [EOG], electromyogram [EMG], photoplethysmography, and motion data) with high precision and low noise, comparable to PSG (<4 μV_RMS). It achieves a 73.2% accuracy and a macro F1 score of 0.72 in sleep staging using an AI model trained on multisignal inputs. Notably, accuracy marginally improves when using only the EEG, EOG, and EMG channels, which may simplify future device designs. This WD offers a compact, multisignal solution for at-home sleep monitoring, with the potential for use as an evaluation tool for personalized sleep therapies. © 2025 American Chemical Society.

How Fast Can a Robotic Drummer Beat Using Dielectric Elastomer Actuators?

Fast drumming presents a speed challenge to many robotic arms. To simultaneously meet the needs for speed, stroke, and force, we proposed and tested a new double-saddle dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) as the artificial biceps for driving a lightweight robotic drummer. This work finds that fast force induction is instrumental to the fast drumming by a DEA-driven drumstick. While a pure-shear series of DEA under a large pre-stretch and lateral reinforcement can generate a large isotonic stroke, it is not fast in isometric force induction. Instead, this work found a double-saddle DEA, which is a degenerated two-segment pure-shear DEA with a middle laterally buckled beam, managed to induce a faster isometric force at a 0.5 s down time constant when its ultimate actuation tapered due to substantial strain stiffening effect. As such, this double-saddle DEA-driven drummer suffered less from the dynamic stroke decrement than the 8-segment DEA did. A 4.4 g DEA managed to swing freely a 7.8 g drumstick up to nearly 60° at 6 kV and a maximum tip speed of up to 0.45 m/s. The drumming frequency upon 5.5 kV activation was up to 2-2.5 Hz. In comparison, an 8-segment pure-shear DEA-driven drummer failed to reach the drum when pulsed at 2 Hz. Interestingly, a slower stroke excited multiple drumbeats due to secondary bounces. To achieve a faster drumming to match a human drummer, it is foreseen that a harder dielectric elastomer material will help drive a faster soft robot. © 2016 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a novel hands-free interface for robot-assisted operation. Surgeons use both hands during surgery, making difficult for them to operate the display. However, by using a modality other than the hands to operate the display, the surgeon can check the necessary information for the operation in real time. Therefore, we developed a system that recognizes breath from the temperature change on the mask surface. Then, we compared the proposed system with a directly recognized breath method. Consequently, the proposed method had the same performance as directly recognized breath method and minimized the risk of contamination. We believe that the application of our developed system will contribute to the improvement of safety and efficiency in the medical field.

Research is presented that investigates the potential for solar power generation with battery energy storage for reducing the effective cost of energy delivered to residential customers if real time pricing is present. A linear optimization approach is developed based upon a two-step process. In step one, given a specified solar array area and battery capacity, the optimal means to meet loads based upon grid power, solar power, and/or battery power is determined. This analysis considers an expected life-span of the solar panel. With these results established, in the next step, the capital costs for the solar arrays and batteries are considered for each point (solar area and battery capacity) in the design space. Ultimately, the results illuminate the most cost effective means to provide power to customers for the chosen system. © 2014 IEEE.

This work studies formation control of Multi-Agent systems (MASs) where its formation size is scalable via a scaling factor (scalable formation). Previous works on scalable formation are limited to either fixed undirected graph or fixed directed graph with p-rooted graph condition. This work proposes a novel distributed algorithm for scalable formation based on a distributed observer to estimate agents' positions. The novel algorithm results in a new matrix, a Laplacian matrix with additional diagonal terms, where the desired formation pattern is embedded in this diagonal terms. With the proposed algorithm, only spanning tree condition is needed as the necessary and sufficient condition to achieve the scalable formation. Numerical examples are shown to illustrate the proposed method.

Multi-functional nanoshuttles for remotely targeted and on-demand delivery of therapeutic molecules and imaging to defined tissues and organs hold great potentials in personalized medicine, including precise early diagnosis, efficient prevention and therapy without toxicity. Yet, in spite of 25 years of research, there are still no such shuttles available. To this end, we have designed magnetic and gold nanoparticles （NP）-embedded silica nanoshuttles （MGNSs） with nanopores on their surface. Fluorescently labeled Doxombicin （DOX）, a cancer drug, was loaded in the MGNSs as a payload. DOX loaded MGNSs were encapsulated in heat and pH sensitive polymer P（NIPAM-co- MAA） to enable controlled release of the payload. Magnetically-guided transport of MGNSs was examined in：（a） a glass capillary tube to simulate their delivery via blood vessels; and （b） porous hydrogels to simulate their transport in composite human tissues, including bone, cartilage, tendon, muscles and blood-brain barrier {BBB）. The viscoelastic properties of hydrogels were examined by atomic force microscopy （AFM）. Cellular uptake of DOX- loaded MGNSs and the subsequent pH and temperature-mediated release were demonstrated in differentiated human neurons derived from induced pluripotent stem cells （iPSCs） as well as epithelial HeLa cells. The presence of embedded iron and gold NPs in silica shells and polymer-coating are supported by SEM and TEM. Fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy documented DOX loading in the MGNSs. Time-dependent transport of MGNSs guided by an external magnetic field was observed in both glass capillary tubes and in the porous hydrogel. AFM results affirmed that the stiffness of the hydrogels model the rigidity range from soft tissues to bone. pH and temperature-dependent drug release analysis showed stimuli responsive and gradual drug release. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are seeing widespread use in military, scientific, and civilian sectors in recent years. As the mission demands increase, these systems are becoming more complicated. Omnidirectional camera is a vision sensor that can captures 360° view in a single frame. In recent years omnidirectional camera usage has experienced a remarkable increase in many fields, where many innovative research has been done. Although, it is very promising, employment of omnidirectional cameras in UAVs is quite new. In this paper, an innovative sensory system is proposed, that has an omnidirectional imaging device and a pan tilt zoom (PTZ) camera. Such a system combines the advantages of both of the camera systems. The system can track any moving object within its 360° field of view and provide detailed images of it. The detection of the moving object has been accomplished by an adaptive background subtraction method implemented on the lowered resolution images of the catadioptric camera. A novel algorithm has also been developed to estimate the relative distance of the object with respect to the UAV, using tracking information of both of the cameras. The algorithms are implemented on an experimental system to validate the approach. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

The LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) fueled ship is one of the solution to solve the emission of SOx and NOx in conventional maritime fuel. Despite the advantages, the LNG fuel is more dangerous due to their low flash point. The leakage of gas fuel is one of the threat of LNG-fueled vessel, due to its explosive characteristic. This study aims to establish the exclusion zone due to LNG dispersion. The analysis contained the potential leakage and gas dispersion along to the exposed area. A verified Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis based on the time accuracy assumption using KFX software was performed to simulate the dynamic behavior of the vapor dispersion. The scenarios were categorized by the leak size, leak location, and mass flow rate. The required environment parameters, e.g., wind speed and wind directions were also considered. It is found that the behavior of dispersed vapor was strongly depending on the leak location and mass flow rate. Surprisingly, the environment parameter has slightly affected the distance of the vapor dispersion. According to these findings, to deliver risk mitigation in a gas leakage accident, the exclusion zone was provided. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
