Folding angle and wing flexibility influence the flight performance of origami winged fruits

Winged fruits possess a unique flight mechanism relying on simple geometric structures rather than neuromuscular control. This study proposes an innovative approach using origami techniques to create three-winged model fruits, serving as a proxy for understanding the flight dynamics of natural winged fruits. Paper is employed to simulate inherent wing flexibility, with the option to add plastic frames for rigidity. We comprehensively investigate the free fall motion of both rigid and flexible winged fruits through experimental and numerical analyses. Velocity–time curves reveal a three-stage descent pattern—acceleration, deceleration, and steady states. The overshoot phenomenon is attributed to rapid lift increase due to leading-edge vortices attaching stably to the wings. This insight sheds light on aerodynamics governing fruit flight. Compared with rigid wings, flexible wings exhibit two key properties—slower descent and higher self-orienting capability—that facilitate a more stable and longer-distance dispersal of seeds under crosswind conditions. Our study demonstrates the potential benefits of flexible wings in natural seed distribution. This study advances our understanding of winged fruit flight dynamics, utilizing origami as a powerful tool for biomimetic investigations. The findings have broad implications, from improving aerodynamic designs to developing efficient micro air vehicles and electronic microfliers, and understanding seed dispersal evolution. An artificial neural network (ANN) consists of a number of interconnecting artificial neurons and employs mathematical or computational models for information processing. ANNs are suitable for handling large amounts of dynamic, noisy and nonlinear data. On the other hand, the wavelet theory provides a multi-resolution approximation for discriminate functions. The combination of the wavelet transforms theory with the basic concept of ANNs leads to new mapping networks called wavelet neural networks (WNNs) or wavenets, which are proposed as an alternative to feedforward ANNs for approximating arbitrary nonlinear functions. Generalized from radial basis function ANNs, WNNs are in fact feed-forward neural networks with one hidden layer, radial wavelets as activation functions in the hidden nodes and a linear output layer. The contribution of this paper is to evaluate the WNNs to model a parathlete swimmer behavior. The parathlete swimmer swims the breaststroke style using biomechanics data generated by the software tool called SWUMSUIT, which was developed in Tokyo Technological Institute in Japan. The forecasted results clearly show that WNN has good prediction properties. The proposed WNN modeling approach can benefit disabled swimmers (parathletes) to gain competitive advantage by studying the biomechanics involved in the sport and considering the help of simulations systems. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper introduces an experimental method to detect the motion of an electrostatic Micro-Electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) resonator in aqueous media. The resonator comprises a micro cantilever beam subject to electrostatic actuation through a side electrode. A Finite Element Method (FEM) model of the resonator is developed to determine the in-plane mode shapes and their natural frequencies in order to facilitate the experimental study. The motion of the resonator lead to variations in its capacitance and induce a current. The developed experiments demonstrate that motion-induced current can be measured and analyzed to detect the motion of the resonator's higher-order modes and can be used in chemical sensing. © 2024 IEEE.

In the present paper we proceed the data-driven modeling of a two degrees of freedom (2-DOF) piezoelectric micromanipulator through models with the Nonlinear AutoRegressive with eXogenous inputs (NARX) structure and real acquired data. We show the results when the system is excited at high frequencies, aiming towards rapid and precise micropositioning. The order of NARX the models are increased until they satisfy the statistical tests based on higher-order correlations and the multiple correlation coefficients, which are close to unity for both measured outputs. The results herein presented encourage the use of data-driven methods for modeling piezoelectric micromanipulators. © 2018 AACC.

The firefly algorithm (FA) is a new population-based metaheuristic bioinspired on the behavior of the flashing characteristics of fireflies. As a population-based algorithm, the FA suffers from large execution times specifically for embedded optimization problems with computational limitations. For reducing execution times we propose a hardware parallel architecture of the FA algorithm that facilitates the implementation in Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). In addition, this work proposes the application of the opposition-based learning (OBL) approach to the FA algorithm. The respective hardware implementation (HPOFA) was mapped into a Virtex5 FPGA device and numerical experiments using four well-known benchmark problems demonstrate that the opposition-based approach allows the FA algorithm to improve its functionality, preserving the swarm diversity and avoiding the premature convergence problem. Synthesis results point out that the HPOFA architecture is effectively mapped in hardware and is suitable for embedded applications. © 2013 IEEE.

The effect of the Pin-fin shapes on the overall performance of the micro Pin-fin heat sink with staggered arrangement is studied in this paper. Six different shapes of micro Pin-fins, square, rectangle, circle, rhombus, triangle and ellipse are subjected to study in this paper. The optimization processes are carried out using computer simulations performed using COVENTORWARE™. The study is carried out over a range of Reynolds number ranging from 50 to 500 and a figure of merit term (FOM) consisting of both the thermal resistance and the pumping power is developed for the overall performance evaluation of different models. A weighted average scheme is used for developing the FOM term. The results of the study revealed that at low values of Reynolds numbers (Re200) rectangle showed the best performance. © 2010 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

Exoskeleton robots are currently widely used in the field of rehabilitation medicine to effectively assist patients with hand function loss in their rehabilitation training. To accommodate the physiological characteristics of the hand, particularly the deviation of the joint rotation axis, this paper proposes a hybrid-driven hand exoskeleton system with redundant compliant mechanisms and conducts motion and force analysis on it. The exoskeleton system can independently drive three fingers and drive their joints separately. To verify whether the exoskeleton system meets the rehabilitation requirements, angle verification experiments and object grasping experiments were conducted. The results showed that the maximum joint range of motion of the exoskeleton system reached 66 °, with an average joint range of motion of 55 ° , fully meeting the rehabilitation needs. © 2023 IEEE.

The limited availability of clean water resources in Gaza Strip is due to the increasing salinity of groundwater, which is due to unbalanced consumption. Furthermore, the increase in the poverty level among the people and the lack of fossil fuel resources, and the high intensity of solar radiation in the strip have grabbed the attention of the authors to think about a suitable alternative to produce potable water via solar energy. This study aims to investigate the linear Fresnel collector (LFC) coupled with a solar still-single effect active system. The solar still was designed to match the LFC output to avoid any heat losses that may decrease the system's effectiveness. A CFD simulation was carried out using Ansys Fluent software to predict temperature and pressure distributions to find out the efficiency of the LFC collector. The results showed that the use of LFC leads to an increase in the efficiency of the solar still, and the daily production of distilled water reaches 1.5 Litre /m2 © 2023 IEEE.

Air-side economizers are increasingly used to take advantage of“free-cooling”in data centers with the intent of reducing the carbon footprint of ***,they can introduce outdoor pollutants to indoor environment of data centers and cause corrosion damage to the information technology *** evaluate the reliability of information technology equipment under various thermal and air-pollution conditions,a mechanistic model based on multi-ion transport and chemical reactions was *** model was used to predict Cu corrosion caused by Cl_(2)-containing pollutant *** also accounted for the effects of temperature(25℃and 28℃),relative humidity(50%,75%,and 95%),and *** also identified higher air temperature as a corrosion barrier and higher relative humidity as a corrosion accelerator,which agreed well with the experimental *** average root mean square error of the prediction was 13.7Å.The model can be used to evaluate the thermal guideline for data centers design and operation when Cl_(2)is present based on pre-established acceptable risk of corrosion in data centers’environment.
