An artificial neural network (ANN) consists of a number of interconnecting artificial neurons and employs mathematical or computational models for information processing. ANNs are suitable for handling large amounts of dynamic, noisy and nonlinear data. On the other hand, the wavelet theory provides a multi-resolution approximation for discriminate functions. The combination of the wavelet transforms theory with the basic concept of ANNs leads to new mapping networks called wavelet neural networks (WNNs) or wavenets, which are proposed as an alternative to feedforward ANNs for approximating arbitrary nonlinear functions. Generalized from radial basis function ANNs, WNNs are in fact feed-forward neural networks with one hidden layer, radial wavelets as activation functions in the hidden nodes and a linear output layer. The contribution of this paper is to evaluate the WNNs to model a parathlete swimmer behavior. The parathlete swimmer swims the breaststroke style using biomechanics data generated by the software tool called SWUMSUIT, which was developed in Tokyo Technological Institute in Japan. The forecasted results clearly show that WNN has good prediction properties. The proposed WNN modeling approach can benefit disabled swimmers (parathletes) to gain competitive advantage by studying the biomechanics involved in the sport and considering the help of simulations systems. © 2013 IEEE.

The firefly algorithm (FA) is a new population-based metaheuristic bioinspired on the behavior of the flashing characteristics of fireflies. As a population-based algorithm, the FA suffers from large execution times specifically for embedded optimization problems with computational limitations. For reducing execution times we propose a hardware parallel architecture of the FA algorithm that facilitates the implementation in Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). In addition, this work proposes the application of the opposition-based learning (OBL) approach to the FA algorithm. The respective hardware implementation (HPOFA) was mapped into a Virtex5 FPGA device and numerical experiments using four well-known benchmark problems demonstrate that the opposition-based approach allows the FA algorithm to improve its functionality, preserving the swarm diversity and avoiding the premature convergence problem. Synthesis results point out that the HPOFA architecture is effectively mapped in hardware and is suitable for embedded applications. © 2013 IEEE.

Reducing the Inconsistency between Doppler and Invasive Measurements of the Severity of Aortic Stenosis Using Aortic Valve Coefficient: A Retrospective Study on Humans

Background . It is not uncommon to observe inconsistencies in the diagnostic parameters derived from Doppler and catheterization measurements for assessing the severity of aortic stenosis (AS) which can result in suboptimal clinical decisions. In this pilot study, we investigate the possibility of improving the concordance between Doppler and catheter assessment of AS severity using the functional diagnostic parameter called aortic valve coefficient (AVC), defined as the ratio of the transvalvular pressure drop to the proximal dynamic pressure. Method and Results . AVC was calculated using diagnostic parameters obtained from retrospective chart reviews. AVC values were calculated independently from cardiac catheterization (AVC catheter ) and Doppler measurements (AVC doppler ). An improved significant correlation was observed between Doppler and catheter derived AVC ( r = 0.92, P < 0.05) when compared to the correlation between Doppler and catheter measurements of mean pressure gradient ( r = 0.72, P < 0.05) and aortic valve area ( r = 0.64, P < 0.05). The correlation between Doppler and catheter derived AVC exhibited a marginal improvement over the correlation between Doppler and catheter derived aortic valve resistance ( r = 0.89, P < 0.05). Conclusion . AVC is a refined clinical parameter that can improve the concordance between the noninvasive and invasive measures of the severity of aortic stenosis.

This work paper considers the problem of a partially permeable mixed-mode crack embedded in a graded magneto electro elastic layer subjected to magneto electro mechanical loads. The medium is graded in the direction orthogonal to the crack plane and is modeled as a non homogeneous medium with anisotropic constitutive laws. Using Fourier transform, the resulting magneto electro elasticity equations are converted analytically into singular integral equations which are then solved numerically to yield the crack-tip mode I and II stress, electric displacement and magnetic induction intensity factors. The main objective of this work is to study the influence of material non homogeneity, crack position and magneto electric permeabilities on the fields' intensity factors for the purpose of gaining better understanding on the behavior of fractured graded magneto electro elastic layers. Results showed that fields' intensity factors increase with nonhomogeneity, and decrease with magnetic and electric permeabilities, and as the crack become closer to the layer's center.

In this study, the effect of indoor temperature for heating on reduction of heating load in Karabuk province was studied for various cases. The potential heating degree-hour values for Karabuk are utilized by using average outdoor temperature distribution of the city. Heating degree-hour values of Karabuk province were estimated according to eleven different indoor reference temperatures (18-28°C). The average outdoor temperature distributions of Karabuk are calculated by utilizing the set of the past 32 years obtained from Turkish State Meteorological Services. The results show that heating loads heating load can be decreased by 47.5% and 4.9% for 18 °C and 28 °C indoor design temperatures, respectively. It is considered that these new method is very useful tools for governments to identify the cities with significant potentials for the reduction of the heating loads. © Sila Science.

This paper is concerned with the problem of identifying a discrete-time dynamical system model for a gene regulatory network with unknown topology using time series gene expression data. The topology of such a network can be characterized by a set of regulation hypotheses, one for each gene. In our earlier work, we formulated a convex optimization method to select the regulation hypotheses (and hence the network topology). In this paper, we further optimize the dynamics of the inferred network. Specifically, for a given topology, we minimize the l_2 distance between the experimental data and the model prediction. We illustrate the performance of our algorithm by identifying models for gene networks with known topology.

The combination of wavelet theory and feedforward artificial neural networks has resulted in wavelet neural networks or wavenets (WNNs). In these networks, the activation functions are described by discrete wavelet functions. Due to the promising properties of time-frequency localization and multi-resolution signal processing of the wavelet transform combined with the approximation capability of artificial neural networks, WNNs have found applications in dynamic system identification field during the past years. The paper aims at the development of the WNN based on traditional firefly algorithm (FA). The proposed FA is based on Tinkerbell map to tune the spread of wavelets and number of selected wavelet bases. The FA is a stochastic metaheuristic approach based on the idealized behaviour of the flashing characteristics of fireflies. In FA, the flashing light can be formulated in such a way that it is associated with the objective function to be optimized, which makes it possible to formulate the firefly algorithm. The efficacy of WNN with FA tuning is tested on the identification of a multivariable thermal process.

Revenues and profits from short life cycle products will depend upon careful formulation and execution of production plans in response to demands in the marketplace. This research contributes to the development of the production and inventory build-up strategies for short life cycle products under different demand-supply scenarios. A modified Bass diffusion model is used to characterise the product demand pattern with consideration of demand-sales interaction. We develop cost models based on production costs, inventory carrying costs, backlog costs, and cost of lost sales for a number of different production scenarios. The optimal production rate is obtained by minimising the total cost. We also investigate the benefit of an initial build-up of inventory before the product's sales period starts. © 2013 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

A general transient mathematical model for managing microalgae derived hydrogen production, with temperature dependence of the cultivation medium is developed. For that, the simplified physical model combines principles of classical thermodynamics, mass, species and heat transfer, resulting in a system of differential equations which are discretized in space using a three-dimensional cell-centered finite volume scheme. A Michaelis-Menten type expression is proposed for modeling the rate of H_2 production with dependence on O_2 inhibition. Tridimensional simulations are performed in order to determine the mass fractions distributions inside a compact photobioreactor (PBR), under different operating conditions. A relatively coarse mesh was used (6048 volume elements) to obtain converged results for a large compact PBR computational domain (5m×2m×8m). The largest computational time required for obtaining results was 560 s, i.e., less than 10 min. The numerical results for microalgal growth are validated by direct comparison to experimental measurements. Hydrogen production simulations are conducted to demonstrate PBR intermittent operation (aerobic and anaerobic stages) feasibility and adequate species evolution trends in an indirect biophotolysis approach. Therefore, after experimental validation for a particular H_2 production system, it is reasonable to state that the model could be used as an efficient tool for PBR systems thermal design, control and optimization for maximum H_2 production.
