Hoshin Kanri is a model for strategy management that was conceived in Japan and is usually applied in the context of Total Quality Management (TQM) and lean implementations. This model is recognized for its strength to build the link between business strategy and business execution. The limited universe of empirical research about Hoshin Kanri, in addition to the resurgence of interest in it amongst western managers, who may face cultural challenges in Hoshin Kanri implementation, leads to the necessity of systematizing a set of universally applicable guiding principles for Hoshin Kanri initiatives. An initial model for guidelines was developed in a previous work through a systematic literature review supported by content analysis techniques. However, in order to develop guidelines that are as relevant as possible for the context of companies, the model must be refined through an empirical approach that takes into account practical experiences from different experts. This work fulfills this through a systematic approach by applying expert interviews for the successive refinement of the guidelines model. The results comprise the refined and confirmed model of guidelines regarding the process and the context of Hoshin Kanri and the discussion about conceptual foundations of the model.

Noise reduction is an import problem to realize the next generation supersonic transport to achieve environmentally acceptable noise level at take-off and landing. The objective of this study is to reduce the flap tip noise by extending trailing-edge flap in spanwise. Noise measurement was conducted to investigate effects of flap tip devices on noise reduction for a supersonic civil transport configuration. Noise sources of airframe noise were identified by using a phased-array microphone measurement system, and it showed that the airframe noise mainly contributed from tips of the leading-edge and trailing-edge flaps. Results showed that noise levels were reduced by flap tip devices, and effects of noise reduction were confirmed.
