In order to develop completely electrodeless next generation plasma thrusters for deep space missions, we have initiated the HEAT (Helicon Electrodeless Advanced Thruster) project. In our scheme, source plasmas are generated by means of the highly efficient helicon-wave discharge;they are then electromagnetically accelerated using external antennas to yield a thrust. The entire process can be achieved without using any eroding electrodes, leading to plasma thrusters of a limitless lifetime. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper deals with the attitude determination and the estimation algorithm of the satellite with two star trackers. The estimation accuracy of the attitude using primary star tracker can be improved by utilizing the attitude information of the secondary (back up) star tracker. Therefore, the attitude determination algorithm using two star trackers is proposed to enhance the accuracy of the attitude estimation. The unscented Kalman filter is used to estimate the attitude of the nonlinear satellite systems, and the decentralized scheme in a federated configuration is adopted so that sensor fault can be easily detected and isolated by employing the fault detection and isolation algorithm. Using the proposed algorithm, the satellite can continuously perform its mission despite the fault occurrence of the attitude sensor. Numerical simulation is performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed attitude determination and estimation algorithm. The difference between visual and instrumental analyses of a shade selection on natural teeth was investigated. With visual analysis, five prosthodontist examined the middle third of the unrestored maxillary right central incisor of a patient using VITAPEN classical and Vita Toothguide 3D-MASTER tooth shade guide. In instrumental analysis, one prosthodontist examined the same teeth using a spectrophotometer （ShadepilotTM, Degudent, Hanau-Wolfgang, Germany, software 2.40）. Overall, instrumental analysis is more accurate and reproducible than a visual assessment. However, the difference is clinically acceptable.

Approximate dynamic programming implemented with an Adaptive Critic (AC) neural network (NN) structure has evolved as a powerful alternative technique that eliminates the need for excessive computations and storage requirements in solving optimal control problems. A typical AC structure consists of two interacting NNs. In this paper, a new architecture, called the "Cost Function Based Single Network Adaptive Critic (J-SNAC)" is presented. This approach is applicable to a wide class of nonlinear systems where the optimal control (stationary) equation can be explicitly expressed in terms of the state and cost variables. Selection of this terminology is guided by the fact that it eliminates the use of one NN (namely the action network) that is part of a typical dual network AC. In order to demonstrate the benefits and the control synthesis technique in using the J-SNAC, two problems have been solved with the AC and the J-SNAC approaches. Results are presented that show savings of about 50% of the computational costs by J-SNAC while having the same accuracy levels of the dual network structure in solving for optimal control. Convergence of the J-SNAC iterations is discussed as well as the reduction of the iterative process to the familiar algebraic Ricatti equation in the case of linear systems. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper deals with the numerical prediction of energy absorption capacity of a tearing tube, which can absorb the crash energy through expanding and axial splitting processes. It is important to consider the dynamic material behavior and fracture characteristics of tube material in order to simulate the deformation behavior of a tearing tube accurately. Uniaxial tensile tests are performed in order to obtain the flow stress curve and the fracture strain of a tube material according to the strain rate. Quasi-static tensile tests were carried out in the range of strain rates from 0.001/sec to 0.01/sec using a static tensile testing machine. Dynamic tensile tests were conducted at strain rates ranged from 0.1/sec to 300/sec using a high speed material testing machine. These dynamic material properties are utilized to finite element analysis through a user material subroutine of ABAQUS/Explicit. Especially, ductile fracture criteria are adopted in order to describe the fracture characteristics of a tube material during axial splitting process. Dynamic tearing cases are simulated and the reliability of numerical results is verified by comparing them with the experimental results in dynamic tearing tests. The simulated results accurately predict the onset of fracture in axial splitting process and the energy absorption capacity has a good agreement with experimental results. © 2010 Society for Experimental Mechanics Inc.

Biomimetic microrobots with multi DOF have powerful applications in the field of underwater monitoring for applications such as pollution detection and video mapping. Most robots focus on complex structure of multi-joint legs to attain the multifunction and flexibility, while others have poor flexibility for miniaturization. To attain a microrobot with compact structure, multifunction, and flexible locomotion, we designed a novel type of biomimetic locomotion employing ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) actuators as one-DOF legs or fingers. Then we proposed a new type of underwater microrobot using ten ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) actuators as legs or fingers, which could realize walking, rotating, floating, and grasping motions. Also, we developed a prototype of this type of underwater microrobot and conducted experiments to evaluate its walking and floating speeds. In addition, we used six IPMC actuators as fingers to grasp some small objects and carry them to float up. © 2010 IEEE.

Identification and online prediction of lifetime of cutting tools using cheap sensors is crucial to reduce production costs and down-time in industrial machines. In this paper, we use the acoustic emission from an embedded sensor for computation of features and prediction of tool wear. A reduced feature subset which is optimal in both estimation and clustering least square errors is then selected using a new Dominant Feature Identification (DFI) algorithm to reduce signal processing and number of sensors required. Tool wear is then predicted using an ARMAX model based on the reduced features. Our experimental results on a ball nose cutter in a high speed milling machine show a reduction in 16.83% in mean relative error when compared to other methods proposed in the literature.

The objective of two-dimensional optimal nesting problem is to place the same or different pieces of the fixed quantity on the sheet in this paper. What we want to do is increase the rate of utility and decrease the waste of panel. Generally, determine the quality of the nesting results;it can briefly be divided into two factors: placement algorithm and permutation. Placement algorithm means to decide the positions where the pieces place into the sheet. And permutation is the placing sequence order of pieces. If the sequence of permutation is available and the placement rule also meets the demand of packing, then the exact or optimal solutions could be found. This research provides a new placement algorithm rule "Area-Decomposition" method. This combines the rotation function for each piece and genetic algorithm. A comparison of nesting with literature and commercial software shows the results. This research can really acquire good results of nesting according to the demand of different situations in interest. © 2008 IEEE.
