The paper presents a joint state and unmeasured input estimation technique for a special class of nonlinear second order macroscopic traffic model. The freeway traffic system is transformed into a quasi and affine approximate Lin- ear Parameter Varying (LPV) form. Observer design technique is formulated using off-line optimization problem subjected to Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) conditions, considering uncertain scheduling parameters. Furthermore, locally designed state estimators are interconnected to cover multiple freeway sections. The elaborated method is validated using real traffic measurements. © 2009 EUCA.

2D compressible Euler equations are used for hydrogen/oxygen rotating detonation engine (RDE) to perform a sensitivity analysis for rotating detonation conditions. First of all the used program was compared with the experimental data obtained by Kindracki and Wolanski. The computational average pressure just after the injection of mixture is similar to that of experimental one;about 0.2 to 0.4 MPa. Sensitivity analyses show that the inlet pressure, Mach number, and temperature have a significant effect on rotating detonation device performance. The results show a narrow window of the inlet conditions for the stable operation while achieving high performance of rotating detonation engine. Copyright © 2009 by A. Identification and prediction of lifetime of industrial cutting tools using minimal sensors is crucial to reduce production costs and down-time in engineering systems. In this paper, we provide a formal decision software tool to extract the dominant features enabling tool wear prediction. This decision tool is based on a formal mathematical approach that selects dominant features using the singular value decomposition (SVD) of real-time measurements from the sensors of an industrial cutting tool. It is shown that the proposed method of dominant feature selection is optimal in the sense that it minimizes the least-squares estimation error. The identified dominant features are used with the recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm to identify parameters in forecasting the time series of cutting tool wear on an industrial high speed milling machine.

In this paper, barrier ribs for Plasma Display Panels (PDP) were fabricated by a micro-transfer molding process that used a soft mold and a UV curable barrier rib paste. Glass fibers were reinforced in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) maxtrix, which increased the strength of the PDMS soft mold. The mechanical properties of the glass fiber reinforced soft mold, such as elastic modulus, were checked in order to secure the dimensional stability of the mold for the molding process. Mold release agents were also employed in the UV curable paste in order to demold the barrier ribs easily from the soft mold.

A New Approach for Manufacturing a High Porosity Ti-6Al-4V Scaffolds for Biomedical Applications

Titanium and its alloys are currently considered as one of the most important metallic materials used in the biomedical applications, due to their excellent mechanical properties and superior biocompatibility. In the present study, a new effective method for fabricating high porosity titanium alloy scaffolds was developed. Porous Ti-6Al-4V scaffolds are successfully fabricated with porosities ranging from 30% to 70% using spaceholder and powder sintering technique. Based on its acceptable properties, spherical carbamide particles with different diameters （0.56, 0.8, and 1mm） were used as the space-holder material in the present investigation. The Ti-6Al-4V scaffolds porosity is characterized by using scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the scaffolds spherical-shaped pores are depending on the shape, size and distribution of the space-holder particles. This investigation shows that the present new manufacturing technique is promising to fabricate a controlled high porosity and high purity Ti-6Al-4V scaffolds for hard tissue replacement.

Modularized GPS software defined radio (SDR) software platform has many advantages of applying and modifying algorithm. Hardware based GPS receiver uses many hardware parts (such as RF front, correlators, CPU and others) that process tracked signal and navigation data to calculate user position, while SDR uses software modules, which run on general purpose CPU platform, to implement same function. SDR needs not change hardware part and it is not limited by hardware capability when new processing algorithm is required. The weakness of SDR is that software correlation takes lots of processing time. However, in these days the evolution of MPU and DSP, and the size minimization of general purpose CPU increase the competitiveness of SDR against the hardware GPS receiver. This paper presents a study of modulization of GPS SDR software platform and development of the GNSS SDR software platform using MATLAB Simulink. We focus on especially post processing SDR platform which is usually adapted in research area. The main functions of SDR are GPS signal acquisition, signal tracking, decoding navigation data and calculating stand alone user position from stored data that was intermediate frequency (IF) down converted and sampled. Each module of SDR platform is categorized by function for applicability. The developed SDR software platform was tested using stored data that IF down converted and sampled. The test results present that the SDR software platform calculates user position properly.

Layer manufacture technologies are gaining increasing attention in the manufacturing for the production of polymer mould tooling. Layer manufacture techniques can be used in this potential manufacturing area to produce tooling either indirectly or directly, and powder metal based layer manufacture systems are considered as an effective way of producing rapid tooling. mechanical properties and accuracy are critical for tooling. This paper reports the results of an experimental study examining the potential of layer manufacturing processes to deliver production tooling for polymer manufacture. A comparison between indirectly selective laser sintering and directly selective laser sintering to provide the tooling was reported. Three main areas were addressed during the study： mechanical strength, accuracy, and build rate. Overviews of the results from the studies were presented.

Coupled extensional and flexural cylindrical vibrations of a corrugated cylindrical piezoelectric shell consisting of multiple pieces of circular cylindrical surfaces smoothly connected along their generatrix are studied. To validate the results for the case of relatively thick shells or equivalently high-frequency modes with short wavelengths, existing analysis is extended by considering shear deformation and rotatory inertia. An analytical solution is obtained. Based on the solution, resonant frequencies and mode shapes are calculated.

The dynamics of a quadrotor are a simplified form of helicopter dynamics that exhibit the same basic problems of underactuation, strong coupling, multi-input/multi-output design, and unknown nonlinearities. Control design for the quadrotor is more tractable yet reveals corresponding approaches for helicopter and UAV control design. In this paper, a backstepping approach is used for quadrotor controller design. In contrast to most other approaches, we apply backstepping to the Lagrangian form of the dynamics. This is complicated by the fact that the Lagrangian form for the position dynamics is bilinear in the controls, which is confronted using a bilinear inverse kinematics solution. Two neural nets are introduced to estimate the aerodynamic components, one for aerodynamic forces and one for aerodynamic moments. The result is a controller of intuitively appealing structure having an outer kinematics loop for position control and an inner dynamics loop for attitude control. The control approach described in this paper is robust since it explicitly deals with unmodeled state dependent disturbances without needing any prior knowledge of the same.
