Computationally expensive problems pose a serious challenge to the successful application of evolutionary algorithms to complex engineering optimization. To address this challenge, surrogate models, also known as metamodels, are commonly used in lieu of the expensive fitness function for the computational cost of optimization. However, it is nontrivial to choose an appropriate metamodel for properly replacing the expensive fitness function. In this paper, an adaptive model selection strategy based on fitness landscape analysis is proposed for a surrogate-assisted particle swarm optimization algorithm. The structure of the sampling space is learned, based on which the more suited surrogate model, either a polynomial regression model or a radial basis function network, will be chosen to estimate the fitness value. Simulation results on seven widely used benchmark functions demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm.

The breathing adjuster is the core component of life support system of an aircraft and it is very important to control the valve to make the breathing adjuster supply the pilot the mixed air with the suitable oxygen concentration. In this paper the mathematical model, which describes the relation between the opening degree of the valve of the breathing adjuster and the flight altitude of the aircraft, is set up through analyzing requirement of aviation physiology and working principles of the breathing adjuster. Then a fuzzy controller is designed to control the opening degree of the valve in order to make the breathing adjuster supply to the pilot the mixed air with suitable oxygen concentration. Finally MATLAB Simulink is employed to verify the feasibility and validity of the fuzzy controlling approach. The results of simulating experiments show that the fuzzy control approach proposed in this paper can make the breathing adjuster supply the mixed air with suitable oxygen concentration to the pilot boarded on an aircraft.

Multimedia transmissions for IoT (Internet-of-Things) sensing has a high demand of route capacity and tight requirements of end-to-end delay. In this paper, we address the problems on how to guarantee delay-related QoS requirements and to balance the energy consumption, while using multipath routing to offer high transmission capability for IoT multimedia sensing. This motivates us to design a Multipath Planning for Single-Source based transmissions routing scheme, namely MPSS, which establishes desirable multiple route paths following B-spline trajectories based on geographical information of source and sink node, sending and receiving angles, and inter-path distance. We further utilize a factor of hop distance to reduce the cumulated error of each hop due to the density of nodes, and to guarantee the delay-related QoS requirements. A Multipath Planning for Multi-Source routing scheme is also designed, namely MPMS, to assign the angle scope according to the source node's priority and traffic. Experimental results show that MPSS can effectively generate well-patterned multiple spline-based routes, and the end-to-end delay is under control according to the delay QoS requirement, while the total energy consumption is minimized.

Dual-fuel injection is an effort to reduce the dependency on diesel and gasoline fuel. Generally, there are two approaches to implement the dual-fuel injection in car system. The first approach is changing the whole injector of the car engine, the consequence is excessive high cost. Alternatively, it also can be achieved by manipulating the system’s control signal especially the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) signal. Hence, the study focuses to develop a dual injection timing controller system that likely adopted to control injection time and quantity of compressed natural gas (CNG) and diesel fuel. In this system, Raspberry Pi 3 reacts as main controller unit to receive ECU signal, analyze it and then manipulate its duty cycle to be fed into the Electronic Driver Unit (EDU). The manipulation has changed the duty cycle to two pulses instead of single pulse. A particular pulse mainly used to control injection of diesel fuel and another pulse controls injection of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). The test indicated promising results that the system can be implemented in the car as piggyback *** article, which was originally published online on 14 September 2017, contained an error in the acknowledgment section. The corrected acknowledgment appears in the Corrigendum attached to the pdf.

The energy resources of nature are limited. According to the report from the International Energy Agency（IEA）, there is 19% of the energy used for illumination. It’s well known that LED is an excellent choice to instead the incandescent lamp for saving energy. But the other question comes out while the high power LED is applied. There is only about 20% of the input power converts to light energy, the rest of power is convers to heat which should be carry out from the LED chips, otherwise, the high heat concentration results in a serious problem to decrease LED working. The most important issue of the LED research is to find a potential design of heat removal and solve the problem of LED over-heating. The purpose of this study is to discuss the heat removal ability of the aluminum-acetone flat plate heat pipe by applying in the high power LED array. The aluminum-acetone flat plate heat pipe is innovative proposed by our team. The high power LEDs with and without heat pipe cooling module is compared. The heat removal efficiency of the cooling module of the aluminum-acetone flat plate heat pipe reaches 92.09% and drops the junction temperature of LED about 36 °C. The thermal resistance is discussed. The cooling module of the aluminum-acetone flat plate heat pipe has proven to be effective in solving the heat concentration problems associated with the LED chips. In short, the phase change cooling module will apply on the electronic component of high heat concentration for more effective cooling method.

In this article, a localized symplectic model reduction technique, locally weighted proper symplectic decomposition (LWPSD), is proposed to simplify parameterized Hamiltonian systems. Our aim is two-fold. First, to achieve computational savings for large-scale Hamiltonian systems with parameter variation. Second, to preserve the symplectic structure of the original system. As an analogy to the proper orthogonal decomposition, the proper symplectic decomposition (PSD) can be used to construct a symplectic subspace to fit empirical data, and yield a low-order Hamiltonian system on the subspace. Instead of using a global basis to construct a global reduced model, the locally weighted approach approximates the original system by multiple lower-dimensional subspaces. Each local reduced basis is generated by the PSD of a weighted snapshot ensemble. Compared with the standard PSD, the LWPSD could yield a more accurate solution with a fixed subspace dimension. The stability, accuracy, and efficiency of the proposed technique are illustrated through the numerical simulation of the wave equation.

This paper presents preliminary results from a pilot study for automated management of blood loss during surgery. The paper describes our approach in developing mathematical models for the cardiovascular system including blood loss and use of colloids for resuscitation. Further, adaptive models are synthesized and used for designing appropriate control algorithms. These algorithms are further integrated into a computerized platform that interfaces with medical devices such as monitors and pumps, which will be tested and validated in animal trials. The eventual development will be minimalist with an open architecture in order to enable easy adoption by others in the community.

Influence of radiation on double conjugate diffusion in a porous cavity

The current work highlights the effect of radiation on the conjugate heat and mass transfer in a square porous cavity having a solid wall. The solid wall is placed at the center of cavity. The left surface of cavity is maintained at higher temperature Tw and concentration Cw whereas the right surface is maintained at Tc and Cc such that Tw>Tc and Cw>Cc. The top and bottom surfaces are adiabatic. The governing equations are solved with the help of finite element method by making use of triangular elements. The results are discussed with respect to two different heights of solid wall inside the porous medium along with the radiation parameter.

The viscous dissipation is an effect due to which heat is generated inside the medium. The presence of radiation further complicates the heat transfer behavior inside porous medium. The present paper discusses the combined effect of viscous dissipation and radiation inside a porous medium confined in an annular cone with inner radius ri. The viscous dissipation and radiation terms are included in the energy equation thereby solving the coupled momentum and energy equations with the help of finite element method. The results are presented in terms of isothermal and streamline indicating the thermal and fluid flow behavior of porous medium. It is found that the combination of viscous dissipation and radiation parameter and the cone angle has significant effect on the heat transfer and fluid flow behavior inside the porous medium. The fluid velocity is found to increase with the increase in Raleigh number

In semiconductor manufacturing, wafer residency time constraints make the scheduling problem of cluster tools complicated. A process module (PM) in cluster tools is prone to failure. It is crucial to deal with any such failure in a proper and timely manner. If there are feasible periodic schedules in operating a cluster tool before and after a PM failure, it is desired to make it operate continuously when such a failure occurs. However, due to wafer residency time constraints, it is highly challenging to control a tool such that it can be correctly transferred from a feasible schedule before failure to another after it. To solve this problem, a Petri net model is developed to describe the dynamic behavior of a single-arm cluster tool and failure response policies are proposed. The proposed policies are formulated via simple control laws for their easy implementation. Examples are given to show them. © 2015 IEEE.
