We have investigated several characteristics of the keystroke dynamics in Japanese free text. In the previous studies, it was indicated that authentication accuracy could not achieve the adequate level of personal authentication for the group including lower typing skill participants. In this paper, we propose a new profiling method generating combined profile documents. By performing a large scale experiment involving 260 participants, we found that the method combining two profile documents out of ten profile documents resulted in the recognition accuracy rate of 98 % even in the case for the group including lower typing skill participants who manage to type 500 to 700 letters per 5 minutes.

A reversible image steganographic scheme implemented in the SMVQ compression domain of image is proposed. The goal of this scheme is to hide secret data into the compression codes of image by applying the SMVQ state codebook. In addition to reversibility and high-payload, the bit rate of the compressed cover image is another consideration in the proposed scheme since the secret data are delivered through the compression codes of cover image. To compact the volume of the overall data needed to be transmitted, the Huffman coding technique is applied. By the proposed scheme, the original VQ-compressed cover image can be restored losslessly at the receiver. Simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

Manufacturing systems need to integrate information from several sources, manage their business processes and coordinate the shop floor in order to meet the schedule at reduced costs. Holonic manufacturing has been proposed to solve these problems and has been normally implemented using agents. However, these implementations are not widely used due to their cost and limited interoperability. In this work, an approach that combines a service-oriented architecture with a multi-agent system is proposed. A list of rules is designed for deciding how to implement each holon, and is applied to the level 3 activities of ISA- 95. The adoption of an enterprise service bus is suggested for decoupling service consumers and producers, and using a complex event processing engine is recommended to detect trends from the day-to-day operations of a plant. This approach is then applied to a grinded ceramic tile manufacturing plant.

This paper provides sufficient conditions for the incremental stability of time-delayed nonlinear systems. It relies on the Razumikhin-Lyapunov approach, which consists in invoking small-gain arguments by treating the delayed state as a feedback perturbation. The results are valid for multiple delays, as well as bounded time-varying delays. We provide conditions under which the limit solution of a time-delayed nonlinear system in response to a periodic (resp. constant) input is itself periodic and of the same period (resp. constant). As an illustration, a specific focus is given on a class of delayed Lur'e systems.

Progression to cell death correlates with neurite swelling induced by stretch injury

Diffuse axonal injury (DAI), a major component of traumatic brain injury, is associated with rapid deformation of brain tissue resulting in the stretching of neural axons. Focal axonal swelling, which is the morphological hallmarks of DAI pathology, leads to the disconnection of neurons from tissues, resulting in cell death. Our goal is better understanding of neuronal tolerance and help to predicting the pathogenesis of DAI from mechanical loading to the head. In present study, we developed an in vitro stretch injury device that subjected cultured cells to a wide range of mechanical stretch that are experienced during in vivo head injury. Then using this device, PC12 cells, which extend structurally axon-like cylindrical protrusions in culture, were stretched to a strain of 0.15, 0.30, or 1.00 at strain rates of 30, 40, or 80 s-1, or left as static culture. Following mechanical loading, we assessed neurite swelling resulting in neuronal detachment from culture substrate and neuronal death. As a result, the increase in early neurite swelling was dependent on the severity of the stretch, and neuronal adhesion and viability at 24 h post-injury decrease in a stretch-dependent manner. These results suggest that the formation of neurite swellings correlates with the progression to neuronal death. © 2012 by JSME.

This paper presents an analysis of parasitic capacitances in resonant rectifier which has significant impact on the operating point of the resonance circuit, which the junction capacitance is to decrease the resonant current and DC output voltage in the circuit at switching frequency less than resonant frequency. This can be represented by simplified series resonant equivalent circuit and voltage transfer function versus normalized operating frequency at varied values of resonant capacitor. The step-up resonant push-pull DC-DC converter was used as design example. The design procedure is based on the principle of the half bridge class-DE resonant rectifier. All power switches are operated under the zero-voltage switching conditions, resulting in higher overall system efficiency. The prototype of resonant DC-DC converter was operated at 62-88 kHz variable frequency, the input voltage of 12-V_(DC), the output voltage of 380-V_(DC) and the output power rated of 150 W. The experimental results have shown that 92.97% efficiency at full power. The experimental results are presented to verify the theoretical analysis.

We present a low cost robotic rehabilitation system for wrist-elbow-forearm. Being used as a household tool is a vision for developing the system. This must bring a great joy to PwSN (People with Special Needs) who experience difficulty to visit a rehabilitation center in the city. First, a prototype of one motor for three joints was developed for the forearm and wrist rehabilitation, and tested with 10 healthy subjects. Based on the trial result, the system was modified for restoring the function of the elbow-forearm-wrist instead. Then, a pre-clinical test was carried out. The result showed that the robotic system is usable for the passive rehabilitation;not at home yet, only at the center.

In the future, the nuclear threat is less likely from a massive nuclear attack, but more likely from crude devices, such as dirty bombs perpetrated by an individual or group of terrorists. Detection and prevention of these nuclear devices are critical to the safety and security of the general population. In general, the research of detecting various radioactive sources using individual sensors has been well established in terms of both detection devices and detection methods, most of which are dedicated to single or co-located sensor systems. Large monitoring systems at choke points (e.g. commercial airports and harbors) can prevent the entry or exit of nuclear sources. However, it cannot protect a perimeter that spans a large area, such as land and sea borders. Furthermore, in many practical scenarios, it is desirable to detect low-level radiation and identify low-level radioactive sources. Recent advances in sensor network technologies have opened up the potential for improved detection, as well as the estimation of source parameters, by utilizing measurements from multiple, geographically dispersed sensors. Different from the existing works on radiation detection using sensor networks, in this paper, we focus on the quickest detection method that would identify nuclear radiation as soon as possible after it occurs, while keep the false alarm rate low. Specifically, we propose that each sensor performs a nonparametric version of the Page's Cumulative Sum (CUSUM) test based on its local measurements, since the occurrence of the nuclear radiation is unpredictable and we assume that we do not have prior knowledge of the adversary (e.g., who carries a dirty bomb). Then the local decisions from multiple sensors are sent to a fusion center for combining and a final decision is made. We present numerical results to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme using the experimental measurements from a COTS detectors in our lab.

Model reference adaptive control is a major design method for controlling plants with uncertain parameters. The primary objective of this paper is to develop a new design approach for the model reference adaptive control of a single-input single-output linear time-invariant plant. The proposed method, called the "Model reference adaptive control using stacked identifiers, "uses a stacked identifier structure that is new to the field of adaptive control. The goal is to make the output of the plant asymptotically track the output of the first identifier, and then driving the output of the first identifier to track that of the second identifier, and so forth, up to the q-th identifier where q is the relative degree of the plant. Lastly, the output of the q-th identifier is forced to converge to that of the reference model. Simulation results shown our paper provides a new adaptive scheme which may give a better transient performance. No state measurement of the plant is required in our method. Since the resulting control systems are nonlinear and time-varying, the stability analysis of the overall system plays a central role in developing the theory. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications.
