We propose an image file compression method using Region Growing and Interpolation. Firstly, using the techniques of Region Growing, we divide the image in blocks. The compression-decompression method is based on bivariate interpolation. Error estimates in terms of the modulus of continuity of the original image are obtained. Experimental results illustrate the performances of the proposed method. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

We have developed scanning laser range sensor called "SOKUIKI" sensor which is ultra-small scanning laser range sensor adopted for various types of mobile robots as we have already published. As a sensor for environment recognition, we thought the sensor must have not only outputting distance data but also another helpful function for mobile robots. So it was considered that what kind of advanced functions should be provided to SOKUIKI sensor. As a result two most important purposes were acquired. 1. Variation on its distance data and method to get the data. 2. The function for prevention of optical interference between sensors. These rolls were installed to the sensor, and confirmed their effect. This paper describes its result and proposes Sensor Communication Interface Protocol (SCIP) which is developed as new command system just for SOKUIKI sensor. © 2006 IEEE.

Using equivalent circuit analysis, the dynamic behavior of ultrasonic wave propagation in solid metals is investigated in this study, particularly in Langevin vibrators clamped with a resonant amplifier to enlarge the vibrating magnitude. For piezoelectric static feature, the piezoceramic impedance and equivalent circuits were obtained for the parameter model of the vibrator via the impedance analyzer. To analyze piezoceramic dynamic feature, the characteristic of motional current relative to frequency response was measured under practical operating voltage for the vibrator. Both static and dynamic features of a piezoceramic vibrator were compared to realize the difference and to build the dynamic equivalent circuit. The vibration measurement module of optical fiber was also employed to detect the maximum displacement of a vibrator with a resonant amplifier. The measured results demonstrate that the resonant frequency is moved to the lower frequency band. The new equivalent circuit model is proposed to further match the dynamic response and the stepped horn increases the vibrating amplitude by about seven times. This is the more efficient mechanical output for a vibrator. Copyright © 2006 by ASME.

An approach for restoring the images of a suspected person taken by a security camera with dirty lens is proposed In the approach, the peculiar facts concerning the security camera system that all the things in the image except the suspected person itself are usually preserved and that can be used for investigations are to be used as fully as possible. As the first trial for realizing the proposed approach, a method of restoring an image of a person's face taken by a camera with dirty lens under strong oblique illumination is proposed and its practical application is demonstrated experimentally. The importance of pursuing the proposed approach is discussed from the viewpoints of not only the novelty in image processing technology but also the viewpoints of the efficiency in criminal investigation and social security. ©2006 IEEE.

A wavelet transformation based on max-plus algebra is proposed, where analysis and synthesis operations are defined by max (or min) and standard sum and they treat with 9 channel multi resolution images. The proposed wavelets especially can reserve edge information on compressed images due to the non-linear operations (max and min); therefore, they are efficient for the compression of predictive frames used in video compression and reconstruction. Through video compression and reconstruction experiments using standard video database, it is confirmed that effectiveness of the proposed wavelets.

In this study, we use the strip-bending test to measure the residual stress of a thin film structure. The principle of the strip bending test and the test procedures are described and the analysis of the strip deformation is presented. The explicit formula for estimating the residual stress is given, which requires the initial stress as an input. As an example, the E-beam evaporated Au thin film is chosen, and the residual stress is measured by the present method. The Au thin film structure has a tensile or compressive residual stress depending on the film thickness. The tensile and the compressive residual stresses of Au thin film are successfully measured by the present method.

The evaluation of material's characteristics from the impact perforation images has been studied in the material engineering fields. In this method, the steel ball is shot into the material specimen, and the characteristic of the material is estimated from the steel ball's behavior. However, the observation of steel ball's behavior is often difficult because of the scattered fragments of the specimen. We have proposed to use the neural network to estimate the steel ball position in the impact perforation image. However, the miss-recognition of the steel ball was often seen because of the influence on the scattered fragments of the specimen. In this study, the preprocessing of the image with the high-pass filter is introduced to improve the performance of the recognition of the steel ball. We examine two types of filters using the Hanning window and the Blackman window

The paper studies the tomography reconstruction of the intra-lipid phantom measured with near infrared (NIR) light (800 nm) using a tomographic scanning device in the DC domain, where the homogenous intra-lipid phantom as the normal tissue is inserted with another different volume density one as a tumor. In our research, the instrument of continuous wave as implied by the name employs continuous-wave light as a light source where the measurement of emerging light can yield the wavelength dependent attenuation. With comparing the difference between the homogeneous and the heterogeneous phantoms, 1-D signal measurement indicates the angular position of the inclusion. Following the measuring procedure, the numerical simulation to reconstruct tomographic images of optical properties was performed using 16 by 16 sources/detectors combination and the initial guess with a homogenous background for all cases where the finite element (FE) analysis was implemented. With the use of real measured data, promising results of tomographic absorption and diffusive image are successfully reconstructed

The coupled oscillation of triple-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) oscillators consisting of (5n,5n) CNTs was investigated by using molecular dynamics simulations. High frequencies of triple-walled CNT oscillators are higher than frequencies of double-walled CNT oscillators. In spire of the different core CNT, the frequency peaks due to the interwall coupling are similar to each other as the number of walls increases. The operating frequencies due to the coupled motions for triple-walled CNTs can be estimated by the classical differential equations.

A mini bone attached robotic system (MBARS) was developed for shaping of the bone cavity in joint arthroplasty. While the system is designed for a general use in joint replacement procedures, the initial implementation was for patellofemoral arthroplasty (PFA) procedure. The current application is image-based, with the plans to develop an image-free approach in which all data collection and planning is performed intra-operatively in the robot coordinate system, eliminating the need for external tracking in the operating room. Experiments conducted using the first MBARS prototype supported the feasibility of the approach. The applied methodology could be extended to other orthopaedic procedures to improve the accuracy and operational time. Moreover, it enables use of the next generation, more anatomically shaped implants and related minimally invasive surgical procedures
