Images recorded by a security camera have often severely degraded due to dirty lens or secular distortion of the recording system. To restore these images, the fully determination of space variant point spread function (PSF) is required. To measure PSF, we used a liquid crystal display. We made some experiment to restore the images by a CCD camera with intentionally distorted optics

There are problems controlling autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) because they are nonlinear and coupled and have external environmental disturbances acting on the vehicle. More difficulties arise when the vehicle tasks require precise positioning and control as in military missions. This paper presents an integrated guidance and control method for an AUV. The algorithm is based on an optimal control method called shrinking horizon model predictive control (SHMPC). Scenarios for reconnaissance and reacquisition in mine countermeasures missions are explored applying SHMPC. In addition, there are scenarios with obstacle avoidance. Simulations of this method show the control method is able to systematically handle disturbances and constraints to successfully maneuver through volatile areas

This paper presents a rotor position controller for sensorless vector control of permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) based on a synchronous d-q frame phase-locked loop (PLL). Extending the capabilities of PLL's for grid-connected converters-using feedback linearization to ensure a constant dynamic response regardless of the operating region and rotor speed, the proposed controller takes advantage of the sinusoidal and balanced PMSM back-EMF voltages synchronizing the estimated and actual d-q frames. The resultant controller structure is readily linearized providing an accurate design tool based on frequency response specifications. A complete design procedure is provided, together with simulation and experimental results with a 3.5 kW PMSM drive, all of which verify the excellent results attained by the proposed PLL-based position controller.

This paper presents a complete design methodology for the sensorless vector control of permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) motor drives in fan-type applications. The proposed strategy is built over a linear asymptotic state observer used to estimate the PMSM back-EMF, and a novel tracking controller based on a phase-locked loop (PLL) system, which by synchronizing the estimated and actual d-q frames estimates the rotor speed and position. The paper presents the complete derivation of all associated control-loops, namely state observer, tracking controller, d-q axes current regulator, speed controller, an anti-saturation control loop - which provides inherent operation in the flux-weakening region, and all corresponding anti-windup loops. Detailed design rules are provided for each of these loops, respectively verified through time-domain simulations, frequency-response analysis, and experimental results using a 300 Vdc 3.5 kW PMSM PWM motor-drive, validating both the design methodology and the excellent performance attained by the proposed control strategy

Long hours of automobile driving under monotonous situations may cause the lowering of what we term a driver's activation state (DAS) or in other words the production of drowsiness, resulting in an increased risk of a traffic accident. There is therefore a need to create a newly advanced system focused on the DAS in-car, hopefully thus avoiding potentially dangerous situations. In order to develop such a system as a final goal, we have firstly set out to acquire such cardiovascular variables as beat-by-beat blood pressure (BP), RR interval from ECG and normalized pulse volume (NPV) used as a peripheral vascular tone of alpha-adrenergic sympathetic activity, during presentation to the driver of a screen movie simulating monotonous travel at constant speed on a test-course. Subsequently, we have investigated the reactivity in terms of the driver's cardiovascular hemodynamics. Through the successful monitoring of cardiovascular parameters during the movie presentation obtained in 11 healthy male subjects, the following results were obtained: The monotonous driving produces a statistically significant gradual rise in BP following drowsiness, which could be explained by enhancement of sympathetic activity using a time-frequency analysis of BP and RR. This finding strongly indicates that continuous driving in such monotonous situations can make a driver considerably stressful and thus may cause a gradual increase in BP, and that this gradual BP increase may be used as a possible index relevant to the DAS. This finding was also confirmed by the analysis of NPV, suggesting that the gradual increase in BP during the monotonous driving would be rather caused by a regulation of peripheral vasomotor constriction

The paper presents the e-learning project and the work until now developed for extending the features of the Italian remote laboratory "G. Savastano" to the academic circles of East Europe, Western Balkan and Mediterranean area. In particular, in the framework of the project "Italian-Croatian remote laboratory distributed on geographic network", the Italian-Croatian collaboration is highlighted. The proposed approach follows EU efforts to implement internal lifelong learning program and influence educational systems of EU partners and neighbor Countries while helping them to overcome problems with their own educational systems and lack of resources. Developed experiments, included in the remote laboratory, give the possibility of achieving practical experience on several fields, while multilingual approach gives the access to such facility to the students coming from different countries. Moreover, the idea of interactively controlled transfer of knowledge and experience offers new opportunities to the remote experiments enabling them to be executed without supervising necessity

A vibration-type ultrasonic vibrator works as an ultrasonic motor when it is pressed slantwise against the surface of an object. In our previous paper we made a trail robot hand with three fingers that each works as an ultrasonic motor. This robot hand can simultaneously grasp a cylindrical body and rotate it about its axis. High torque is obtained when an optimum contact force is used for the ultrasonic motor. We propose a detection method to measure the grasping force of the robot hand by the change in the amplitude of vibration. It was confirmed that the vibration amplitude detected by a piezo-element on the vibrator was decreased almost linearly with increase in the grasping force of robot hand. The grasping force affects very little change in the resonance frequency of the vibrator in comparison with the temperature by its self-vibration.

A safe road-crossing system is very important to improve the mobility of blind people. In this paper, an image-based real-time novel approach is proposed for detecting a zebra crossing and also measuring its length. Detection is achieved through bipolarity-based segmentation along with projective invariant-based recognition and then measurement of length is performed from the number of stripes in the segmented area. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique. © 2005 SICE.
